Not only am I going to introduce to you 12 popular Japanese dishes but I’ll show you the different ways they’re eaten, where they’re eaten, tell you a bit about their history, and hopefully you can learn a little bit about Japanese culture through it all.   3. History of Japanese curry fascinating and the original recipe is from the IJN back when there was an IJN. Formerly it is known as navy curry.

  6. Enjoyed learning about the historical and cultural background of these dishes that I’ve been eating all my life. As a pescatarian, it was particularly interesting to hear that meat wasn’t widely consumed in Japan before the mid 19th c.

  8. Greg, I was in Shinjuku in April and ordered a “surprise me” / “chef’s choice” 5-skewer special in a lower level izakaya. I’m thinking that at least 2, maybe 3, of the surprises were mystery organ meats. Sort of meat, but sorta crunchy. Any idea what I had?? 2 beers helped…

  9. I was in Japan (Chiba, Saitama and Narita) a couple weeks ago. I always like to go to grocery stores to see the selection and price comparison to where I live, LA. I noticed a big selection of the pork in supermarkets (Kawaguchi, Aeon MaxValue, etc) was imported from Canada. I thought that was interesting. I was sad to not have a kitchen to cook in because it looked delicious.

  12. Curry’s roots trace back to the Tamils in the Indian subcontinent. The term “curry” comes from the Tamil word “kari,” meaning a spiced sauce or stew. Ancient Tamil kitchens used ground spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and black pepper to create Curry Paste, a practice still observed among Tamils.

  13. You skipped over how Koreans introduced horumon and yakiniku to Japan. Important part of history , that’s why often you’ll see kimchi and other side dishes at Yakiniku restaurants.

  14. When eating sushi, I pour a thin layer of soy sauce on a plate and let the rice on the bottom of the nigiri piece or a roll segment soak it up for a few seconds. The bottom part never disintegrates, and the soy sauce adds flavor to the otherwise bland rice.
