Saturday, August 29. Clear and sunny. I’ve been so busy lately
that I neglected my home. When it bothers me,
I end up cleaning the whole place. Cleaning… Cleaning… It’s starting to get cluttered. I should tidy everything up soon. A hand-me-down from Mom. An online discovery. A flea market purchase
I made as a student. Trinkets that Ritsuko gave me. She stopped by on her way home
from a trip and set them out for me. This takes me back. Maybe the previous owner
left this in there by accident. “My hobby…is eating.” Let’s clean this up
after a quick lunch. Fried rice sounds good. The ingredients are
a cucumber, myoga ginger, and perilla leaves. Cut the cucumber lengthwise and deseed it with a spoon. This is exciting. The seeds would make it watery. Slice it diagonally, but not too thinly. Crunchy even after cooking. Julienne the myoga ginger. “My hobby is…” “I’m good at…” “My best trait is…” “My secret crush is…” Each space is filled in one by one. We’d often play around
and fill these out in elementary school. Put the half-cooked egg on a plate. I like this shade of yellow. Unstick the still-warm rice
while sautéing it. If I lived
in a huge, magnificent castle, I’d have all my favorite things
placed around me. But in this castle,
my countless “favorite things” can only be stored
on one set of shelves. There’s no way that’s possible. My bountiful love is spilling over. Once your pan is oiled,
add your cucumber, salt, and pepper. Finally, put the egg back in with myoga ginger and perilla. Sauté it a bit and voilà. It’s done. Let’s eat. So tasty. The salt and lemon really bring out
the vegetables’ flavors. A perfect fried rice for the summer. So many blanks. I used to be so frantic
when I filled out these profile forms. I need to find a new home
for the “favorites” that won’t fit. “Do you…remember these?” “Oh, I threw those souvenirs onto you!” “Find them a nice new home, okay?” “Thank you
for sticking with me all these years.” “Treat me to something
when they’re sold.” Okay, okay. There’s a limit
to how much I can store here, but this packed space
lets me be myself without ever changing. On the other hand, if I make space,
I can also fill it with new “favorites.” I’m not saying it’s better either way, but keeping some spaces blank
might’ve looked cool, too. There’s some space in my castle now. Let’s discover
more “favorites” to bring home. #7 Summer cucumber fried rice

Ingredients
1 tofu (300g)
1/2 bag (125g) bean sprouts
1 bag bean sprouts
1/2 tsp salt
15 g butter
1 tsp Japanese soup stock (granulated)
2 Tsp salad oil
black pepper to taste

◆7話：きゅうりでパパッと夏チャーハン
溜まっていたお掃除。休日に、とことん気になったところをキレイにしていく。掃除中、ものがあふれた棚から崩れてきた小物たちを前に、夏希は断捨離を決意する。それぞれのものとの出会いを思い出しながら仕分けしていると、本に挟まったプロフィール帳を見つける。
本の前の持ち主が、忘れたままにしてしまったのだろうか。空欄だらけのプロフィール帳を眺めながら、一息つく。
パパっとチャーハンでも作って、掃除の続きをしよう。
