A strong wind blew one day in late June. Midsummer-like days have become the norm these days. 🌞 Our morning walks are getting shorter and shorter.. Because no matter how much shade you walk in, it is hot and unbearable. 😞 But it’s great to turn on the air conditioner before I leave the house and then come back to a cold room after a long walk! 🕊️ KOME is losing more and more of her winter fur and her neck is getting thinner and thinner. 🐶 Her body hair, which was fluffy, has become firm and thick. 💫 On our walk, an old lady who was mowing the grass in the park gave us some fish mint flowers! 🤭 Hats off to fish mint for its vitality and fertility… 💭 And these sunflowers are still going strong. 🌻 It is time for Ume work again this year! These are 10 kg of Nanko plums, sent to me by the parents of a friend of mine in my hometown. 🥺 Last year, when I visited my friend’s parents for the first time in several years, we talked about plums and I learned that my friend’s family is a plum farmer. So they sent me a bunch of plums for my Ume work this year! 🤩 Including 2 kg of pesticide-free green plums, which were at a discount at the supermarket, a total of 12 kg of plums will be used this year! I will be using ripe Nanko plums to make pickled plums, plus the annual spiced plum syrup, and also a plum vinegar syrup. 🤭 This is the first time I’ve used fully ripe plums, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it will taste. Ripe plums do not need to be de-accented, so only the green plums should be soaked in water until the work begins. ◎ Mrs. Miyamoto and my junior will be participating in this year’s Ume work, and I will be waiting for them while I cook lunch. 🍳 This is the chicken wings for curry that I prepared last night. Chicken wings marinated in yogurt, fermented garlic seasoning and curry powder! ◎ First, bake this chicken in the oven. 🔥 Make Coconut Lemon Cream Curry with Chicken Wings! 🤭 Heat butter, bay leaves, chilies, and mustard seeds and wait until they crackle. 🤫 Then add garlic, onion, and cinnamon and saute well. 🍳 Squeeze the juice from the lemon and chop the rind. 🍋 Add the grilled chicken wings to the thoroughly sauteed onions! ◎ Once the water in which the chicken wings’ marinade has been dissolved has been added to the pot, simmer slowly over medium heat for 40 minutes. 🥣 While the curry is simmering, make the German potatoes! Saute sausage and onions, add garlic, zucchini and new potatoes. Seasoning is salt and pepper and plenty of mustard! ◎ How can it be so simple and yet taste so good? 😢 I plan to put a lot of cheese on it and then toaster it just before eating. To finish the curry, add curry powder, coconut milk, fresh cream, lemon juice, lemon peel, butter, salt and pepper. I also added rice flour to thicken it up just a bit. 🤫 Then simmer until the flavors are well blended! The soup is easily made with fermented onions, chickpeas, lettuce, salt and pepper. 🕊️ In the meantime, they arrived! 🐕 KOME is overjoyed to see Mrs. Miyamoto and my junior, whom he has not seen in a long time! Mrs. Miyamoto gave me many souvenirs! 🤭 A reward after Ume work, souvenirs from Nasu, and much more! 🦊 And treats for KOME,,,
Thank you for everything! 🥹 Now let’s fill our stomachs before Ume work! ◎ Let’s finish making the curry! A refreshing curry with the aroma of coconut and lemon, served with avocado, tomatoes, marinated carrots and pak choi in a colorful way! 🎨 Lemon and corn are also garnished and peppered to complete it! There are German potatoes that I baked to a golden brown and even chickpea falafel that Mrs. Miyamoto made! 🤤 After filling our stomachs with a summer hospitality lunch, we will be hard at work this afternoon on our Ume work! 🔥 The refreshing coconut lemon curry with lots of vegetables was very tasty!!!! I’ve eaten so much, I feel like going to sleep, but here’s where the day really begins…! First, remove the hull of the plum. This year, it’s a yellow world, not green! 🌻 There were 12 kg of plums and I thought it would be hard work, but with three of us doing it, it was over in no time! 🤭 After hull cleaning, sanitize the jars and prepare the lemons, herbs and spices. 🍃 Lemon, ginger, cardamom, clove, star anise, and pink pepper,,, bay leaves, rosemary, cinnamon, chili peppers, etc. Finally, the plums are packed into bottles. As if they were conducting an experiment, everyone was free to fill the jars with plums! 😂 Green plums are also added with apple cider vinegar to make plum vinegar syrup! In no time at all we were done making plum syrup! 🕊️ May it be a delicious syrup! 💫 My junior had to go to work later, so he broke up with us. So from here, Mrs. Miyamoto and I will make pickled plums together! Simply add ripe Nanko plums and salt to a bag disinfected with shochu. Once the plum vinegar has accumulated in the bag, we will watch it from there for about three weeks! 👀 When I made this two years ago, I had white mold, so I will have to keep a close watch on it daily this year…! I didn’t have just the right weight, so I substituted a book. 📚 This is the end of Ume work in 2025! The reward is delicious coffee and Japanese sweets. We did really well! 🕊️ I was so busy with work this year that I thought I might not have time to do Ume work, but I am so glad I was able to make it happen. 😮💨 Thank you again for a great time today! ◎ I used damaged plums to make plum jam. This jam is so versatile that it runs out quickly, as it is delicious with soda, on bread, and in cooking! 🎖️ I decided to combine the freshly made plum jam with green tea. Our neighbor, Mr. Nakano, gave us Japanese sweets from Hakone again this year! 🥹 By the way, I got the same Japanese sweets last year on the same day I did Ume work… 💭 The day I do my Ume work and end the day with this wagashi is my ‘entrance to summer’. 🤭🍉 So much happiness spread from my mouth to my whole body! 😢 A day of seasonal handiwork is filled with a great sense of accomplishment and happiness! 🕊️ Each and every time, they envelop us without tiring. Each time I do, I am able to catch up with the season I am in! 🐾 The days of the rainy season, which did not seem like a rainy season, have passed. The summer solstice has passed, and the heat is getting hotter and hotter. Summer colds are prevalent throughout Japan, and heat stroke warnings have been issued! I never heard of fish mint. They’re very pretty flowers. The lunch you & Mrs. M prepared looks so amazing! I remember the plum vlog from last year. Love watching kitchen magic creating beautiful recipes. I love pickled plums. There’s a company in Michigan called Eden Foods & they carry some really nice Japanese food. Even though it is hot and humid here in Costa Rica with lots of warm rain, it is known as Winter. Our other season is Summer. Hot, dry and no rain. Our winter, or rainy season is either El Nino, not so much rain, and La Nina, lots of rain and storms. We are in La Nina this winter.
I buy plums often. I don't know what kind they are. They are purple.The next time I ask for them, I will ask for ume and see if they know what I am asking for.😉
