Eating the hottest Japanese-style curry

I’m sure you’re no stranger to a curry in fact I’m partial to a cheeky ball tee every once in a while but have you ever tried Japanese curry I’m here with food tribe to try out the nation’s most famous curry chain Coco curry curry house Coco et bania also known as Coco Ichi specializes in Japanese curry rice it was founded in 1978 and originally started out as just three shops in the suburbs of Nagoya today they’ve expanded up to 1,000 shops around the world recently they’ve opened up their first London restaurant in Covent Garden and I’ve just announced a second branch near Bond Street set to open early 2020 but what makes it so popular is it the taste is it the spiciness let’s find out there’s actually a very specific way of ordering their curry is not as simple as just selecting a dish from the menu everything is customized from rice portion to spice level and optional toppings the first step is to select your curry sauce you have to choose between pork mild pork beef and hashed beef step 2 the quantity of rice this is really important as the amount of sauce depends on your rice portion the more rice you order the more sauce you get it starts from 200 grams and goes all the way up to 900 grams and if you’re really hungry you can even order more than 900 grams just to put that in perspective that’s the same as a whole large ten of quality Street chocolates third step is to select your spice level it starts from mild which is more for children or people not accustomed to spicy foods then it goes all the way up from one to ten the interesting thing is that spice level five is 12 times spicier than number one but level six to ten are limited to those who have already eaten an entire serving of level five imagine wanting to eat level ten only to be told that you have to eat a whole other plate before doing so it’s like a bloody video game and level 10 is the boss level although if you’re not into your spice there’s an option to go the opposite direction and select levels of mildness the mild spectrum is for those who are more in favour of sweet curry where the sauce is made from honey and fruits the final step are the toppings you can go from as simple as vegetables and a pork cutlet to having spinach and a hamburger patty it can even go as far as crab cakes and fermented soy beans the combinations are endless they also have a vegetarian and halau menus to accommodate those with different cultures and dietary habits so without further ado let’s try ordering Japan’s favorite curry I went with spice level one just because I wanted to enjoy my meal and not feel like my face is falling off while eating it let’s see what the fuss is about that’s a really nice even that level one there are still some kick to it I am full but that was delicious I do wander however and what is level ten like okay so I think I’m making a big mistake but I’ve decided to test out what level 10 spice is gonna be like now one thing people do to cleanse their palate is to eat this pickle and it’s supposed to kind of absorb all the spice so you can carry on eating curry I think I might have to have a few bits of these before I go for level 10 I don’t do spicy foods so let’s give it a go wow that burns cool that’s very spicy I would not recommend having a full plate of this it depends if you’re in love of spice and if you are this is perfect for you it hurts to breathe in that’s not spicy ears I’m literally sweating [Music] have you tried Coco curry yet if so what are your thoughts let us know in the comments below [Music]

CoCo Ichibanya – or CoCo-Ichi – is the biggest Japanese Curry House chain in the world. It now has more than 1,000 restaurants, including one in the UK. But it’s not just any kind of curry house… you choose your spice level from one to 10. Obviously we get our man Leslie in Osaka, Japan, to try the hottest one there.

  1. Meh… boring. At least eat the bowl. This is 3 minutes and 50 seconds of you yapping how to order and 10 seconds of actually tasting.

  2. Very interesting. I had no idea that there was such a thing as Japanese curry and it looks like it is well worth trying. As long as this isn't higher end prices, then I'm a fan of their modular menu.

  3. I would have liked to see a plate of level 5. Would be interesting to see what the hottest they'll hand you without a firm warning is.

  4. If the only two branches are in Covent Garden and Bond Street, we all already know the deal – it'll be twice the price it is anywhere else in the world, frequented by pretentious city-worker twats… Oh look! The same dish, £5.75 in Japan (not a cheap country to start with) is £13.40 in the UK. Way to completely miss the point of what is clearly supposed to be an affordable, vaguely healthy alternative to burger-chain crap.

  5. Stand at ease. Now then! In the event of war and hunger is a problem. Simply open a box of compo and lump it all in large pot. Add curry and tabasco stir continuously . You have just made Army Nuclear Stew.

    Best stew ingredient:

    Mixed Veg tin one of
    Corned Beef one of
Babies heads (steak and kidney pud)
    Oxo cubes
    Salt peper.
    Powdered potato mash to thicken
    Curry to taste
For that oriental hint stick a bag of micro wave rice or Super Noodles.

Always have soft toilet paper in you backpack.

    KBO.

  6. I loved eating at Cocos when I lived in Japan. The best I ever managed was level 2. I watched people eat level 6 and they would break out in a sweat after 1 bite.

  7. Lies. You can order whatever level you want to start with. I tend to go to cocoichiban when travelling for business and am alone. Just the one serving, always ask for between an 8-10. This is just met with a "are you sure". Then after finishing a quick walk back to the hotel to use the bidet…

  8. Coco's was my gateway curry. Before them, I'd only been introduced to mediocre homemade American curries and was convinced I didn't like them. Coco's on Okinawa was a religious experience, and I've recently learned that one has opened in my state. Time for a road trip.
