25 FOODS From PORTUGAL You Must Try – From Porto to Lisbon and Guimaraes šŸ‡µšŸ‡¹

This video is a collection of our travelsĀ around Portugal starting in the north withĀ Ā  some amazing pastries and famous “Francesinha”Ā and “Cachorrinho” then we head to the south toĀ Ā  enjoy some Pasteis de Nata and grilled chickenĀ in Lisbon then we jump back to the north forĀ Ā  some amazing “petiscos” in Guimaraes and someĀ other delicious foods of Porto, so let’s begin. Behind me is “Confeitaria Tamisa”Ā and this is a localĀ coffee shopĀ Ā  and bakery offering all the differentĀ typical and local Porto pastries bothĀ Ā  sweet andĀ savory also some deliciousĀ looking sandwiches and some otherĀ Ā  foods. So this is our firstĀ stop inĀ Porto and let’s go and check them out The display is full of different pastriesĀ ofĀ course there is famous Pastel de Nata butĀ Ā  also Eclairs, chocolate donuts many otherĀ cakesĀ and some savory stuff like these LancheĀ  pastries stuffed with different ingredientsĀ it’sĀ just an amazing display of the local pastries Our food is here and it smellsĀ amazing and itĀ looks gorgeous and we got Lanche Ć  Lavrador aĀ Ā  local sandwich of Porto andĀ it’s stuffedĀ with many different things: cheese, ham,Ā Ā  salami, tomato and pickled pepper we alsoĀ gotĀ a Croissant with cheese and then from the sweetĀ Ā  stuff we got Bola de chocolate which isĀ typeĀ of a donut stuffed with vanilla and egg creamĀ Ā  topped with chocolate and we got ofĀ courseĀ the trademark of Portugal pastel de nata theĀ Ā  famous desserts we got couple of moreĀ dessertsĀ
here and I think now we are ready toĀ dig in. The first things – first, Lanche Ć  LavradorĀ theĀ local sandwich from Porto let’s go. wow the pastry is so nice, soft but alsoĀ a bitĀ crunchy and I’m sure they’re usingĀ Ā  corn flour for this and then thisĀ look at this beautifulĀ color on top.Ā Ā  This was additionally toasted and thenĀ all these ingredients just: ham, cheese,Ā Ā  pickledĀ pepper really kicks in!Ā Salami, absolutely beautiful! My son ordered something veryĀ interesting this was actuallyĀ Ā  a croissant which they stuffedĀ withĀ cheese and then they toasted it nowĀ Ā  it has these nice stripes on theĀ outsideĀ and it’s quite flat but let’s try it. It has a very, very sweet taste. ThisĀ is a butter croissant but thenĀ it’sĀ quite sweet and it has cheeseĀ Ā  insideĀ which is savory, very, very interesting. okay now let’s jump to the sweetĀ stuffĀ and the next thing is BolaĀ Ā  Chocolate or the chocolate ball, theĀ donut stuffedĀ with sweet vanilla andĀ Ā  egg cream and of course toppedĀ with some chocolate let’sĀ go. wow the cream is just oozingĀ outĀ the pastry is very light, very airyĀ Ā  andĀ then of course that chocolateĀ layer on top, really beautiful. Now time to try PastelĀ de Nata theĀ Portuguese trademark a deliciousĀ Ā  basket made of puff pastry andĀ stuffedĀ with some delicious cream. Let’s go! Full of this pudding likeĀ stuffingĀ very nice taste sweet again notĀ Ā  too sweet and goes quite goodĀ withĀ this crunchy puff pastry around it another very interesting curiosityĀ with thisĀ Cafe is this card this isĀ Ā  our order and once we are ready weĀ just need to go there bring thisĀ andĀ Ā  pay first time I see somethingĀ like this butĀ quite interesting. Another fantastic looking pastryĀ andĀ dessert so let’s go with this one as well the pastry is definitely the sameĀ likeĀ for Ɖclair but this cream hereĀ Ā  is like a whipped cream with a little bitĀ ofĀ minty taste, nice sweet dessert as well. What an amazing breakfast both sweetĀ and savoryĀ Ā  stuff were great drinks as well andĀ the prices were quite goodĀ such aĀ Ā  great start to this Porto food tour butĀ we need to continue to our next place. Behind me is “Cafe Santiago” with officially theĀ Ā  Best Francesinha sandwich in the city soĀ let’s go, and of course check them out. There is really a local vibe toĀ this placeĀ quite casual, quite relaxed and of course thoseĀ Ā  Francesinhas are just coming outĀ we ordered oursĀ and in the meantime I had to try “Super Bock” theĀ Ā  local beer that is brewed in manyĀ differentĀ places here in restaurants around Porto, cheers! It’s always good to eat something niceĀ and hotĀ and I ordered typical Portuguese soup and thisĀ Ā  soup has very nice yellow colorĀ I thinkĀ it probably comes from a pumpkin and thenĀ Ā  there is cabbage inside someĀ ChickpeasĀ and also some carrots so let’s go. Nice and thick broth not too thickĀ thoughĀ and then sweet cabbage, carrots,Ā Ā  chickpeas very nice and very hearty combination,Ā aĀ perfect food for the weather in Porto. The egg yoke on top and it’s runny of course. Kids got Francesinha SantiagoĀ withĀ a French fries and that hot dog withĀ Ā  French fries as well but IĀ gotĀ the classic one so let’s start. And just look at the insideĀ layerĀ upon layer of bread,Ā Ā  steak, ham and cheese soaked in thisĀ sauceĀ and let’s go with the first bite. The steak is quite juicyĀ but it’s alsoĀ a bit chewy but nothing that I can’tĀ Ā  handle also you canĀ feel some spicinessĀ there’s some pepper inside and then ofĀ Ā  course the taste of hamĀ cheese andĀ then the standard toasted bread cheese is falling from all the sidesĀ butĀ anyway let’s go with the next one. Actually the more I eat it I feelĀ thatĀ spiciness… The secret is you needĀ Ā  to dunk it into this sauce and thenĀ itĀ really becomes something special, cheers! Next thing to try isĀ FrancesinhaĀ Santiago and this one has doubleĀ Ā  steak sausage and egg on top let’s go! Now Francesinha Santiago is muchĀ betterĀ experienced because of all these additionalĀ Ā  ingredients and that chorizo styleĀ sausage itĀ really improves the taste it has such a niceĀ Ā  taste than that egg on top theĀ steak is prettyĀ much the same like in the standard FrancesinhaĀ Ā  but then everything else plusĀ these friesĀ it really improves the experience, cheers! A true killer Francesinha SantiagoĀ somethingĀ really, really special! I’m really glad we orderedĀ Ā the trademarkĀ of this place the FrancesinhaĀ SantiagoĀ Ā  because I like the typical Francesinha but it didn’t really have that WOWĀ Ā  effect whileĀ this one producedĀ it really with a WOW effect. Nice and juicy and then this sausage reallyĀ starĀ of the show in Francesinha Santiago sandwich. The rest of my team got tired andĀ alsoĀ  quite full after this dinner but so IĀ Ā  will now continue solo and we’re going toĀ goĀ and try some of the local traditional hot dogsĀ Ā  the Cachorrinhos at one veryĀ localĀ and very traditional place let’s go! There are two Gazela shops in theĀ distance of 100 meters from eachĀ Ā  other of the traditional hot dog fromĀ PortoĀ Cachorrinho so these Gazela shopsĀ Ā  are packed with people and we’ll tryĀ to getĀ in and try this local delicacy. this place is a home to some trueĀ professionalsĀ when it comes to the preparing food to tappingĀ Ā  this beer and alsoĀ to servingĀ all this food to the people here. so far so good I ordered myĀ Cachorrinho I orderedĀ someĀ Ā  fries and of course beer from the tap, cheers! Armies of “puppies” the hotĀ dogs here howĀ they call them Portuguese: the Cachorrinhos. going out being servedĀ to the peopleĀ the same amount of beer obviously friesĀ Ā  as well this place doesn’tĀ stop it’sĀ very busy, it’s hectic, it’s crazy…Ā  Or simply put: it’s very crazy,Ā it’sĀ very busy, it’s the way I like it. Everything is here the fries, the CachorrinhoĀ and the beer a perfect combination. The melted cheese the hot dog insideĀ andĀ very, very crunchy bread outside, let’s go! This is much, much better than I expectedĀ the hot dog is quite tasty the bread isĀ Ā  so,Ā so crunchy there’s also a littleĀ bit of spiciness to it just like theĀ Ā  doctorĀ ordered and this is really a perfect bite. The fries are perfect as well:Ā hot,Ā absolutely fresh, nice, crunchy… Amazing! Some of the bestĀ fries thatĀ I’ve recently eaten, anywhere. To push the things a little bit. I also got some nice and hot Francesinha sauceĀ Ā  to try it both with CachorrinhoĀ and withĀ the fries so let’s go. I didĀ a dunk in Francesinha sauce so let’s go. WOW this is now a completelyĀ new dimensionĀ Cachorrinho was a bit spicy Francesinha sauceĀ Ā  is even more spicy it’s but it’sĀ reallyĀ amazing I mean spiciness from CachorrinhoĀ  and then combined with the spiciness fromĀ Francesinha sauce, beautiful crazy and amazing. Let’s do it with fries. Definitely Francesinha sauceĀ improvesĀ everything that’s a fact. Truly a perfect meal, inexpensive, very simple butĀ Ā  that’s the catch theĀ simplestĀ things are always the best. What an amazing experience atĀ “Gazela”, theĀ buzz, the people and of course the food andĀ Ā  the drinks that perfect combination of allĀ theseĀ very important ingredients. I didn’t expect thatĀ Ā  CachorrinhosĀ  are such a delicious foodĀ but theyĀ are! Simplicity at their bestĀ Ā  and then just adding that Francesinha sauce in the game that was a killerĀ  Behind me is a place called “Castro” and weĀ cameĀ here to try some local “PastĆ©is de Nata”. We are in one of the local very famousĀ spotsĀ for PastĆ©is de Nata , Castro and here theyĀ Ā  make pastĆ©is on the spot they also fillĀ them up with this vanilla stuffing andĀ Ā  they areĀ freshly made, freshly baked, so let’s go. This is pretty much a new level comparingĀ to onesĀ we tried in Porto and these are so delicious theĀ Ā  pastry is very buttery, veryĀ crunchy,Ā fine and then this vanilla nice, hot,Ā Ā  quite runny and very delicious. I think whatĀ thisĀ Pastel de Nata makes so great is that they areĀ Ā  absolutely fresh but obviouslyĀ madeĀ up to all the best standards, cheers! Let’s try the second one toppedĀ withĀ cinnamon and some powdered sugar. With some cinnamon on top it getsĀ thatĀ recognizable cinnamon taste. With orĀ Ā  without cinnamon PastĆ©is deĀ Nata are incredible pastry. Behind me is “Restaurante Primavera”Ā andĀ this will be our lunch stop in Lisbon. We are in Restaurante Primavera and thisĀ isĀ a very local, very typical restaurant andĀ Ā  here it’s all about chicken. We canĀ seeĀ how it’s getting prepared before theĀ Ā  service starts before they’re openĀ for theĀ guests and they do the typical PortugueseĀ Ā  churrasco chicken the whole onesĀ on thatĀ spit or the ones opened on the grill andĀ Ā  they work like machines they’reĀ very fastĀ with cleaning and preparing these chicken. We made our orders and we’re goingĀ toĀ start with the soup first. Name of thisĀ Ā  soup is “Canja” and this isĀ a chickenĀ soup with this typical soup pasta. Very tasty soup, very strongĀ tasteĀ of chicken these chickenĀ Ā  shreds here it’s salty enough and then thisĀ pastaĀ inside really melts inside your mouth. Our chicken is here as wellĀ and weĀ ordered the whole chicken from theĀ Ā  spit and we also ordered the halfĀ portionĀ the one from the grill, so let’s start. The smell is incredible andĀ I wentĀ for the whole chicken because it’sĀ Ā  really looks amazing the meat has veryĀ niceĀ color there’s this very thin andĀ Ā  crunchy skin on it and as you can see itĀ completely fallsĀ off the bone, so let’s go. It’s so soft, it’sĀ so tasty andĀ then the skin outside crunchy,Ā aĀ Ā  bit salty this is really a perfectĀ chicken and the thing that I like isĀ Ā  that there’s noĀ that char on it soĀ this was really perfectly roasted. Let’s combine it now with this orange rice This is some seriously tasty rice itĀ has some very nice taste I don’t knowĀ Ā  how they achievedĀ it but it reallyĀ goes perfect with this chicken. Let’s try their fries as well. The fries are decent not the bestĀ thatĀ we tried in Portugal but they’re okay. Now we cannot call this Piri-Piri chickenĀ withoutĀ some Piri-Piri sauce on top, so let’s go. Piri-Piri sauce improves the tasteĀ of the chickenĀ but it’s also so hot,Ā Ā  very spicy, quite strong it clears your throat itĀ opens your sinusesĀ probablyĀ Ā  fixes some other things on the way, cheers! Let’s try and put this Piri-Piri fireĀ down with some Portuguese beer, saĆŗde” I move to that open grilledĀ chicken and let’s try it. Very soft and very tasty,Ā but not as juicy asĀ that chicken on theĀ spit I think this is the mainĀ Ā  advantage of the chicken on the spit it keepsĀ thatĀ moisture that juiciness nonetheless goodĀ Ā  but then I will after this bite go with withĀ aĀ drumstick I suppose drumstick is much better. This is something I learnedĀ in Porto thatĀ with this typeĀ Ā  of chicken the drumstick and theĀ ribs are the best parts and thisĀ Ā  one has veryĀ nice skin there’s a charĀ on top from that grill, so let’s see. Yes, there’s no mistake withĀ a drumstickĀ quite strong smoky taste, very crunchy skinĀ Ā  it has been grilled on that charcoalĀ so youĀ can taste everything here and quite good. And I’ll have to give it anotherĀ go with aĀ Peri Peri sauce it’s quite an experience. This was quite an amazingĀ lunch inĀ a very typical local churrascaria, local restaurant we really enjoy this chickenĀ myĀ favorite was the chicken on the spit and theĀ Ā  Piri Piri sauce is also quite an experience,Ā soĀ now we’re going to continue to our next place. We are in beautiful Ajuda neighborhoodĀ and behind me is “Rota dos Petiscos”Ā Ā  and we’reĀ going to stop here for some tasty bites. This is a very small and localĀ place butĀ it has some amazingĀ Ā  smell of food once you come insideĀ and we made our orders and they’reĀ Ā  veryĀ famous for these oval platesĀ stuffed with some delicious foodsĀ Ā  we also got some drinks and whileĀ we are waitingĀ I’m going to enjoy some local beer, cheers! As an appetizer we ordered “Queijo Fresco” orĀ theĀ fresh cheese so let’s go with the first bite. It’s so soft, it’s soĀ light, mild taste and it’sĀ not very salty as well quite nice local cheese. Our food started to arrive and we gotĀ theseĀ beautiful plates stuffed with “Alheira”Ā Ā  the Portuguese famous sausage topped withĀ friedĀ egg then some fries in the middle and thenĀ Ā  some salad on the end of this plate and thenĀ theĀ second one with a beef steak topped with a friedĀ Ā  egg some fried garlic and some sauce andĀ alsoĀ some fries so let’s start with Alheira first. Steaming hot Alheira sausageĀ withĀ some fried egg let’s go. Very crumbly and crunchy skin of theĀ sausage but then inside that beautiful,Ā Ā  tasty, succulent meat just amazingĀ theĀ egg of course improves the things. Let’s try some of these in-house fries. Hand cut nice and starchy inĀ the middleĀ crunchy on the outside, excellent. Next thing to try is thisĀ beefĀ steak with a very runny egg yolk. Very tasty, nice, tender, juicy youĀ do need to chew but again this is aĀ Ā  goodĀ quality meat and prepared up to perfection. Every bite is better than the previousĀ oneĀ and it really goes well with these fries But I had to go back to this incredible alheiraĀ sausage different types of meat inside, nice juicyĀ Ā  and then very crunchy skin on the outsideĀ thisĀ is very skillfully prepared and it’s so tasty. Another “prato”, anotherĀ plate is here andĀ this oneĀ Ā  is loaded with fries loaded withĀ cheese and bacon. These fries areĀ probably not the authenticĀ Portuguese food but the ingredients are andĀ Ā  it’s incredible likeĀ all the previousĀ dishes here just incredible taste. This place is quite small as IĀ mentioned butĀ it is quite busy there’s only one waiter andĀ Ā  I suppose only oneĀ person working inĀ the kitchen so you do need to wait aĀ Ā  bit once you order yourĀ food, butĀ once your food is here oh boy thisĀ Ā  is a pure joy this is an incredibleĀ andĀ very tasty and freshly prepared food. We also got some “PastĆ©is de Bacalhau”Ā or the cod fritters with some rice withĀ Ā  beans andĀ topped with couple of cherry tomatoes. These are so fresh, so hot outĀ ofĀ the fryer! Inside very soft,Ā Ā  full of that cod meat very crunchyĀ on the outside quite delicious. Let’s try it topped with this rice. Let’s try the rice on its own. And for farewell we got “BabaĀ de Camelo”Ā the traditional Portuguese dessert. Wow! Quite sweet quite tasty has thatĀ taste ofĀ a caramel but probably something else as well. What an incredible food at “Rota dosĀ Petiscos”Ā made with a lot of loveĀ Ā  and great skill an incredible foodĀ and such a greatĀ surprise we reallyĀ Ā  and truly enjoyed it this was someĀ top quality, top level, localĀ food. Behind me is “Leitaria da Quinta doĀ PaƧo” and this placeĀ is more than 100Ā Ā  years old and they’re very famous forĀ their Ɖclairs but they also have someĀ Ā  savoryĀ brunch options and thisĀ will be our first stop in Porto. We got seated we made our orders andĀ ourĀ eyes popped out when we saw allĀ Ā  these delicious Ć©clairs in that display andĀ this is a traditionalĀ iconic place of Porto,Ā Ā  105 years of existence it started as aĀ dairy shop then it expanded itsĀ productionĀ Ā  to Ć©clairs then it also became famous forĀ its unmatched whipped cream and the restĀ isĀ Ā  history. I ordered a “Brunch Classico” andĀ this is a homemade bread nice and crunchyĀ Ā  with someĀ scrambled eggs and then some veryĀ nice smelling bacon on top. We also got manyĀ Ā  differentĀ Ć©clairs but we’ll deal with themĀ later let’s start with this Brunch Classico. BrunchĀ Classico, nice and freshĀ let’s go with the first bite. The bread is quite nice aĀ bit crunchy on the outside,Ā Ā  eggs – standard scrambled eggs andĀ thenĀ some very nice quality bacon, cheers. That Brunch was quite a warmup for theĀ mainĀ thing the Ć©clairs and I will start off withĀ Ā  this whipped cream stuffedĀ and thenĀ topped with lemon glaze, Ć©clair. This in-house made whipped creamĀ isĀ absolutely gorgeous, Ć©clair pastry perfect,Ā Ā  fresh and then this sweet and acidicĀ tasteĀ of lemon glaze makes it a perfect dessert. While I was eating my brunch most ofĀ the Ć©clairsĀ got decimated by my kids and wife so we had toĀ Ā  order some more and we got a new batch and thisĀ isĀ the classic one so let’s try the classic Ć©clair. The classic one is very nice, againĀ niceĀ pastry, nice whipped cream but kind ofĀ Ā  falls behind that lemon one thatĀ oneĀ was just perfect still very good Ć©clair. Next one to try is Redberry jam Ć©clair. Again that fantastic combination ofĀ sweet andĀ acidic the jam is a bit sweet, it’s acidic,Ā Ā  it’s refreshing againĀ the pastryĀ the whipped cream the total package. The next one is “DuchesseĀ de Fios de Ovos” and thisĀ Ā  isĀ the shreds of egg yoke on top and this oneĀ Ā  has twice the whipped creamĀ the red color comes from thatĀ Ā  Raspberry Ć©clair that I justĀ triedĀ and let’s go with this one as well. Quite different again theĀ abundanceĀ of whipped cream and then these savoryĀ Ā  shreds of eggĀ yolk, very, very interesting Ć©clair. What an incredible start of the dayĀ inĀ Porto trying all these foods all theseĀ Ā  Ć©clairs and we ate I think aroundĀ 20Ā different items most of them Ć©clairs such a long tradition such a great placeĀ butĀ now of course we continue to our next spot We are in Matosinhos neighborhood andĀ this wasĀ once a fishermen’s village butĀ Ā  now is a famous neighborhood of PortoĀ for itsĀ seafood, seafood restaurants,Ā Ā  seafood market. You want some freshĀ seafoodĀ this is the place and behindĀ Ā  me is “Restaurante Serpa Pinto” and this will beĀ ourĀ lunch destination so let’s check them out. Before we dive into that seafood weĀ gotĀ some starters and we got severalĀ Ā  soups I got Caldo Verde my wife got fishĀ soupĀ and for kids we got Sopa Legumes allĀ Ā  the local typical soups and CaldoĀ VerdeĀ famous for its green color the greenĀ Ā  vegetable inside and also ChouriƧo,Ā theĀ sausage made with some red wine let’s go. Nice, hot and very heartyĀ soupĀ nice taste of potato,Ā Ā  kale and of course the main ingredientĀ isĀ that very tasty ChouriƧo. Cheers! I’ll just quickly try my wife’s fishĀ soup as well. It has niceĀ color, quite thick and smells quiteĀ niceĀ as well has these croutons on top. Quite strong taste and full of theseĀ fishĀ bits this is a proper soup for any fish lover. This is a very typical local fish restaurantĀ andĀ as you can see they have a huge display here withĀ Ā  crabs with prawns with seashells, clams andĀ someĀ other seafood outside there is a fish fridge asĀ Ā  well and as you can see these crabs are notĀ aliveĀ and kicking but that’s because they get all theseĀ Ā  seafood fresh in the morning then theyĀ boilĀ it and then once you make your order they’reĀ Ā  going to finish the preparation. So this isĀ howĀ they do, this is the local principle and we’reĀ Ā  going to go in the kitchen see how it’sĀ doneĀ and then enjoy some of this great seafood. This lady is opening this crab bit by bitĀ andĀ then she will break all the claws all the legsĀ Ā  everything so this is goingĀ to be easierĀ for us to eat afterwards the crab headĀ Ā  gets stuffed with this salsaĀ and thenĀ the edible bits of brain are added. Also she’s going to cut and openĀ theseĀ very nice looking red lobsters. With the main platter we also got some clams andĀ they’re simply prepared with a bit ofĀ garlic,Ā Ā  olive oil and some lemon juice All these crustaceans are gettingĀ arranged onĀ this huge platter the prawns, the lobsters,Ā Ā  the spider crab, some musclesĀ as wellĀ and I can’t wait to try all of this. Our insane seafood platter is here thisĀ is fullĀ of many goodies coming from the Atlantic OceanĀ Ā  and we have this huge spider crabĀ we haveĀ couple of lobsters we also have an army ofĀ Ā  prawns. We have mussels and I think that’sĀ all!Ā The crab head is stuffed with a local mix theĀ Ā  local salsa made of bread, tomatoes, mayo,Ā beerĀ and some other ingredients and on top there areĀ Ā  red bits of crab brain which are eatenĀ theĀ rest is not eaten and it’s time to dig in This is practically like a “FishĀ PĆ¢tĆ©” allĀ these different ingredients,Ā Ā  bread probably some fish as well eggs, veryĀ spicyĀ paprika and of course these brainĀ  bits from crab. Quite a goodĀ treat for any seafood lover. Even though the choice is quite good I couldn’tĀ Ā  wait to get my hands on thisĀ veryĀ juicy and tasty looking lobster. Nice and chunky bit of lobsterĀ tailĀ but let’s go with the first bite. Very meaty, very sweet taste, nice,Ā juicyĀ this is just a perfect lobster Another chunky and juicy looking bit ofĀ Ā  lobsterĀ and this time I willĀ try it with this spicy mayo. This mayo really gives some kickĀ to thisĀ lobster and it’s quite tasty as well. In between the seafoodĀ someĀ wine is good as well, cheers! Nice, dry, not sparkling butĀ almostĀ there and quite tasty, cheers! Time to try the musclesĀ and I will alsoĀ use this local salsa made of onion,Ā Ā  parsley, peppers and olive oil. This salsa really improvesĀ the tasteĀ that onion andĀ Ā  everything else inside just gives thatĀ additional nice flavor to this mussel. I managed to clean this prawn but I didn’t manageĀ Ā  to save the head juice butĀ anywayĀ straight from the Atlantic, cheers! Amazing taste! Again juicyĀ a bitĀ sweet quite meaty and quite nice. This was a seafood Porto marathon and weĀ managedĀ to get to the finish line, we couldn’t finishĀ Ā  absolutely everything but we ate mostĀ of theĀ things and we really enjoyed them so cheers! Very good and very tasty seafood feastĀ at “Serpa Pinto Restaurant” but thisĀ Ā  willĀ be it for this eveningĀ and we continue tomorrow,Ā Ā  we’re going to GuimarĆ£es to try someĀ localĀ incredible foods so see you there Good morning from PortoĀ butĀ we are off to GuimarĆ£es! We are in the incredibly beautifulĀ cityĀ of GuimarĆ£es in the north ofĀ Ā  Portugal and we are starved sinceĀ we missed ourĀ breakfast so we areĀ Ā  now looking for our lunch destination andĀ hopefully toĀ enjoy some great local foods.Ā  Behind meĀ is “Taverna d’Avo” and this will beĀ our lunchĀ destination in GuimarĆ£es,Ā so let’s go. We will also get a chance to seeĀ howĀ the things are done in the kitchen. Tapas style small dishes, everythingĀ gets aĀ proper amount of olive oil, and some salt. We got seated in this very charming,Ā veryĀ cute looking local tavern with some quietĀ Ā  Fado music playing in the backgroundĀ andĀ this place really has a character,Ā Ā  everything looks so nice so authentic we alsoĀ hadĀ a chance to see how the things are doneĀ Ā  in the kitchen and we ordered “Petiscos”Ā theseĀ small plates with different stuff:Ā Ā  salads and dishes, and we also got theseĀ traditionalĀ Portuguese fritters the “bacalhau”,Ā Ā  the cod ones and these are pastriesĀ stuffed with meat,Ā so let’s dig in. As soon as they broughtĀ the salads in,Ā Ā  there was that smell of freshĀ vegetable orĀ fresh salad so let’s start with a cucumber. Nice and refreshing with a lot ofĀ sea saltĀ I suppose this is a local cucumber CoupleĀ Ā  of more “petiscos” arrived and theseĀ areĀ chicken giblets, I can’t wait to try them. Nice, soft, very tasty, there’sĀ veryĀ nice taste of paprika asĀ Ā  well in this sauce that they wereĀ stewed in very, very good bite! Those chicken giblets were soĀ tastyĀ but now it’s time for some “Bacalhau”. These are actually donut-likeĀ fritters stuffed with some codĀ Ā  meat and these are quite fresh,Ā nice, soft, juicy – incredible! The small plates just keep arrivingĀ and we gotĀ “Alheira” the typical Portuguese white sausage,Ā Ā  then we got some pork ribs and we alsoĀ got someĀ chunks of fried pork as well, so let’s continue. This fried pork breaks justĀ withĀ a fork and and let’s try it. The texture is so nice it’s soĀ tenderĀ it really breaks inside your mouthĀ Ā  and I suppose some wine isĀ used asĀ well for frying this pork, amazing! I got the one with aĀ littleĀ bit of fat on it, let’s go! Nice and simple but perfect pork meat. Traditional Portuguese sausage: “Alheira”Ā andĀ made of different meats and this one is completelyĀ Ā  crumbly, very soft inside,Ā treadsĀ of different meats so let’s try it. I got goosebumps after trying this sausage IĀ don’tĀ know if it’s only sausage or maybe this Fado music as well but this is so tasty.Ā So soft, tenderĀ these different meats,Ā Ā  different flavors combiningĀ inside this is an incredibleĀ Ā  sausage and IĀ think the first ofĀ this kind that I’ve tried, cheers! This sausage definitelyĀ deservesĀ another bite before I continue. Another interesting “petisco”Ā areĀ these pork ribs so let’s try them. The meat is falling off theĀ bone completelyĀ Ā  there is a strong taste of red wine which was usedĀ to stewĀ these ribs another incredible small dish. I almost forgot to try thisĀ fritterĀ stuffed with some beef. Like everything elseĀ so far,Ā nice, fresh and very tasty. Our “Arroz de Tomate” the riceĀ with tomato is hereĀ Ā  also with some cod fritters onĀ the side, so let’s go with this. “Arroz tomate” smoking hot riceĀ andĀ tomato served with these cod fritters. These cod fritter are aĀ little bitĀ different than those typical onesĀ Ā  the typical ones are more juicyĀ but that’sĀ why the rice here kicks in and helps rice isĀ Ā  quite juicy quite tastyĀ perfectly cookedĀ then this tomato sauce is so tasty andĀ Ā  also there’s a lot of vegetableĀ inside itĀ gives that additional crunch, incredible! To be honest I prefer this rice on its own it’s soĀ good so tasty allĀ this vegetable inside, perfect. we also got a meat substituteĀ for those cod fritters to goĀ Ā  with rice and this isĀ a schnitzelĀ type – battered and fried meat. This is definitely veal or beef it’s very tender,Ā Ā  perfectly prepared andĀ anotherĀ very tasty, small dish here. But I will finish this lunch withĀ Alheira,Ā the famous local sausageĀ Ā  and you can see just how there are differentĀ bits ofĀ meat inside several different meatsĀ Ā  and also the texture, everything,Ā this sausage is truly incredible. Such anĀ incredible lunch at “Taverna d’Avo” those “petiscos”, the small dishes they wereĀ soĀ tasty, so good that sausage pork then theĀ Ā  rice in the end you don’t know which oneĀ wasĀ better from the previous one and also the serviceĀ Ā  was quite good and affordable as wellĀ this wasĀ such a great lunch in the heart of GuimarĆ£es. I am at “Taskinha do Alex” and this placeĀ isĀ quite busy I think this is the young people’sĀ Ā  choice the prices areĀ quite low the food isĀ local, typical and there’s a crowd of people,Ā Ā  young peopleĀ outside drinking, eatingĀ but anyway I got a side position,Ā Ā  I’m going to check theĀ menuĀ and see what I’m going to order Good news for myself I got upgraded withĀ thisĀ small side table and now I’m ready to start. My order came quite quickly, they work quiteĀ fastĀ and I got the traditional ChouriƧo theĀ Ā  sausage on flame, I got bifana of course, IĀ got some ofĀ the hand cut local chips and IĀ Ā  also got “Rissóis” the local fritters one stuffedĀ withĀ chicken the middle one with pork and thisĀ Ā  one stuffed with mushrooms of course thereĀ is aĀ full pint of “Super Bock” the local beer, cheers! When you’re grilling this sausage youĀ need to workĀ fast you need to turn it all the time otherwiseĀ Ā  it will burn but anyway I think IĀ managed toĀ do a good job so let’s start with it first. The skin is very thin, very crunchy,Ā the insideĀ is with a fatty, beads with a meaty bits,Ā Ā  a lot of paprika, someĀ spices,Ā very nice and tasty chouriƧo. I think the trademark of this chouriƧoĀ is thatĀ crunch on the skin it’s really incredible andĀ Ā  also it has been pre-cutĀ so it’s quiteĀ convenient once you start eating it. I have to go withĀ the friesĀ next while they’re hot. Of course ketchup and mayo are providedĀ itĀ with the fries and as you can see theĀ Ā  shape is quite different these areĀ properĀ homemade fries, very tasty so delicious. Some Super Bock to help on the way, saĆŗde! Coming straight from thatĀ pot overĀ there constantly stewing this meatĀ Ā  the bread was dipped aĀ littleĀ bit on this side so let’s go! Bifana is quite a discovery for me IĀ expectedĀ yet another simple sandwich but no, this isĀ Ā  something completely different,Ā so tasty, so goodĀ and this sauce is a mix of “Piri Piri” some beer,Ā Ā  wine and some otherĀ ingredients and spicesĀ this meat is also quite tender so tasty,Ā Ā  being cooked andĀ stewed in that sauceĀ for hours the only thing I wish is thatĀ Ā  this bread was completelyĀ soaked in thatĀ sauce not only the part of it, cheers! Some more of these incredibleĀ friesĀ while they’re still warm Whether on their own with mayo orĀ ketchupĀ they’re great that nice and starchy tasteĀ Ā  inside of a real potato aĀ bit crunchyĀ on the outside, a bit salty, perfect! Let’s go now with these frittersĀ asĀ they told me the chicken stuffedĀ Ā  one is more of a Brazilian influenceĀ butĀ nonetheless the package is Portuguese. The chicken is so soft, so tender, it’sĀ likeĀ cooled chicken inside again flavors, spicesĀ Ā  it’s really incredible. Then of course theĀ crunchyĀ skin on the outside another perfection. The pork stuffed triangle is next. These things are repeatingĀ themselves,Ā again very soft, tender but this one juicy,Ā Ā  quite juicy and thenĀ these spicesĀ that remind of bifana, incredible. Last thing to try is thisĀ fritterĀ stuffed with mushrooms, let’s go. Quite good taste and there’s alsoĀ some pesto sauceĀ inside quite warm,Ā Ā  nice, crunchy on the outside, perfect. I can never say no to these fries. And for a farewell I got this specialĀ drink on theĀ house and this is “Bagasse com mel” this is theĀ Ā  leftover when you make wine and thisĀ alcoholicĀ drink is then mixed with honey, cheers! Wow this packs a punch,Ā it’sĀ quite strong, nice, tasty, saĆŗde! This was some crazy busy and hecticĀ place.Ā The kitchen is working non-stopĀ Ā  dishing out some amazing food more andĀ moreĀ people coming in the food was great,Ā Ā  quite cheap, good vibes and this is whatĀ it’sĀ all about and with this we also end our foodĀ Ā  tour of Portugal. I hope you enjoyedĀ thisĀ video and until the next time all the best.
