ゆらり旅〜函館で昭和と令和を探す旅【どさんこワイド179】 2025-10-30
I’ve come all the way to Hakodate. So, I’ve come all the way here. I’ve brought you some famous Showa-era songs and people from Hakodate, but today’s theme is discovering Showa and Reiwa in Hakodate. Well, off I go. Did I just sing a little bit myself? I sang. A full course meal featuring the latest Reiwa technology will transport you back to the good old days of the Showa era at this retro cafe. About a four-hour JR ride from Sapporo to Hakodate, my journey to discover Showa and Reiwa begins. My first stop in search of Reiwa in Hakodate was Gyojinja, a shrine with a long history that was established during the Edo period and is also the birthplace of hot springs . I searched for Reiwa, not Wa, but Reiwa. The shrine’s most distinctive feature is the sheer number of amulets. From the most standard to ones with various inscriptions. Yes. Guuji-san, I’ll be accompanying you. Thank you. Thank you. Amazing. This is the amount of amulets. How many types are there? Yes. Well, I think there are over 100. With 100 varieties, I’m sure you’re having a hard time choosing. Yes, I think you enjoy being confused. This time, yes. I came here looking for something with the keyword “Reiwa” in mind. They’ve released a new amulet made from a material called resin. It seems nice. This one has a certain shape. Yes . For the past few years, we’ve collaborated with a local artist, Nakano Kobo, and have each one handcrafted and shaped. There are also rabbits and other designs. Rabbits are our most treasured animals, so these amulets incorporate rabbits. I see . They really do feel like Reiwa. That’s right. It’s a material we’ve never used before, so I think it’s fitting for this era. Like an accessory. We also have an amulet like this, a collaboration with Hakodate products. It looks like a stylish keychain, doesn’t it? And the newness of the Reiwa era isn’t just amulets. I think many people consider collecting them to be one of the joys of traveling , but normally, yes. Here. This is certainly lovely, but the Reiwa era is a little different. Yes. What kind of master is this? He is the master of this Kirie painting. Kirie is amazing. This is so cute. I can’t believe this is a master. Isn’t this piece? This is also a limited-edition Kirie painting, created in collaboration with a Kyoto designer, limited to autumn. [Music] Oh, la la la la. It’s quite detailed, but what kind of design is it? Yes. Yes. This one, first and foremost, is based on the hot spring motif, and then on a rabbit motif. Really. The rabbit is using the hot spring. Yes. And then, the stomach and intestines were raised. This dense design only became popular this autumn, so it’s a master unique to the Reiwa era. Yes. Yes. I’m grateful to hear you say that. I’d like to display this. That’s right. I received it at this shrine with over 370 years of history. Yes . Wa is a simple, elegant style. That’s right. I won’t call it a joke. I ‘ll pray and move on to the next step, hoping for many more encounters in the future. Are you skipping all the way through? I heard another restaurant today is related to the Reiwa era. It’s a paella specialty restaurant. It’s rare to hear of a paella specialty restaurant. Owner-chef Shiota, whose name means “sea and mountain” in Spanish, is a talented chef who previously served as sous chef at a restaurant in Barcelona, Spain. Of the roughly 10 types of paella available, the most popular is the ajillo paella, filled with clams and mushrooms. The fragrant garlic aroma is just mouthwatering. Why did you choose a paella specialty restaurant? Since Spanish cuisine is known for its rice dishes, I thought it would be well-received in Japan, a country with a similar rice cuisine and culture. [Music] Yes, a paella specialty restaurant. I heard there’s something unique to the Reiwa era, and I’m glad you listened. Thank you. Please come in. Excuse me. Now, excuse me for a moment. Yeah. It’s a regular private room, you know. Right. At first glance, it looks like a regular private room, but… History begins to move forward from here. History begins to move forward. This is big, isn’t it? It is. What kind of experience awaits me? Something glowed. It’s three minutes in. Oh, two. Oh, amazing. Wow, beautiful. I’ve never experienced anything like this in a restaurant. Amazing. An ordinary private room is transformed into a fantastical world with projection mapping. There are other surprises as well. It flew over. Oh, amazing. There are vegetables on it like a plate. [Music] What? This is a video, so they brought it for me. Excuse me for this. Here again is Otsuna En’s freshly made prosciutto and vegetable salad. Something made with the ingredients shown in the amazing video is now here. [Music] That’s right. Wow, this is a clever idea, isn’t it? It’s a clever idea. That’s a phrase from the Showa era. The projection mapping video and the actual food are linked together, seamlessly integrating into a new era of course meal table. [Music] It’s wonderful, isn’t it? This special experience is limited to one group per day for both lunch and dinner . What’s more, the video was created by Toshida’s sister, who also created the original videos for episodes 1 through 5. I actually quite enjoy commissioning others to create videos , but when we moved from our previous restaurant to this location, we spent about a year preparing, so I wondered if I could try something new. The star of this full-course meal, which is both visually and savory, is 18-month-aged Spanish cured mackerel. We’re particular about the food, too. The exquisite saltiness and the melting oil in the mouth made it incredibly delicious. And now, the long-awaited gold. Now, the main dish. [Music] I like this. This is interesting. This is Tenmi no Yubi no Umi. Excuse me. It’s luxurious. Thank you. It smells wonderful, too. This tire was made using angel shrimp, a brand of shrimp from Shimairi Kaido, the island closest to heaven. I think it’s an exceptional shrimp, with a great texture and distinctive sweetness. These shrimp are precious. Yes, they are. The rice is also infused with seafood soup stock, simmered for 72 hours, giving it a rich flavor. It’s a small, simmered soup. It looks delicious. Yes. The seafood really hits home. [Music] The texture of the rice, along with the delicious seafood, is also excellent. Thank you. Next, we’ll have the precious angel shrimp. Yes. Mmmm. Delicious. [Music] The elasticity is irresistible. And the flavor feels so concentrated. It’s so cool and rich. The projection mapping course meal requires reservations by the day before. You can enjoy a new experience unique to the Reiwa era. This is a great place for people who just want to pop in and take a video. That’s right. I made this delicious paella, but speaking of which, we ‘re currently running a promotional campaign showcasing the appeal of Hakodate and Aomori’s seafood in a competition. [Music] It would be great to ride the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next March, and enjoy some local cuisine. For more information, please visit the JR Hokkaido website. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Showa era. From here, we’re looking for the good old Showa era in Hakodate. This time, we’re in the Showa era mood. Because there’s no traffic, you can enjoy the scenery even more. It’s a really beautiful view. You have to go here. That’s right. Speaking of Showa in Hakodate, this is the place. Hakodate Park Children’s World opened in 1956. Its famous oldest visitor in Japan turned 75 this year. He’s not a big senior. Yes. He’s a representative of the Showa era in Hakodate. He’ll continue to be a part of it. [Music] And last year, a shop where you can truly experience the Showa era opened: Hakodate Showakan Cafe, making its TV debut. Yes. Excuse me. It feels like a home. Hello. Excuse me. It has quite a charming atmosphere, but that famous pink door. What did you do to it? It’s handmade. Oh, handmade. Yes. When you open the door, you’ll be transported to the Showa era, where you can go anywhere. Oh, go to the Showa era. So, can I take you to the Showa era for a bit? Thank you. Excuse me. Excuse me. Oh, there’s an old man there already. Oh, a customer is here. Ah, wow. There are so many things that evoke the Showa era. There was a reaction, but our manager, Mr. Naito, collected Showa-era toys and home appliances as a hobby, and they’re lined up like a nostalgic treasure. Bonchichi is also becoming popular now, isn’t it? Spaces like this aren’t that common, so it’s very relaxing to have all the things I used to see as a child gathered here, and it brings back memories. Are all the records lined up like that? Yes. Yes, how about your love? Open it and you’ll see more. Wow, there’s an incredible amount. How many of these are there? Well, there’s only about 300 or 400. And there aren’t any. This is a huge amount. Which one of these is your favorite? [Music] This one. Oh, I know that too. 240 million people are so kind. Thank you for joining us. [Music] [Laughter] Even you know, ah, it’s Inbe. That’s right. There was this kind of image problem too. If you hit UF, you get extra points. And since this is a frozen cafe, the food is also impressive. [Music] Yes. Sorry to keep you waiting. It comes on a hot plate, right? That’s right. In the Showa era, it was served piping hot on this hot plate. [Music] The colors overlap. It completely overlaps. It’s Neapolitan Karaage. It’s okay if you spill it. I’m sure it’s okay if you spill it. The noodles are a little thick, aren’t they? [Music] Oh, that’s right. Yes. Let’s eat. Yes. Mori-tan, the noodles really need to be thick. Yes. Yes. Yes. It’s hot because it’s on a hot plate. It’s hot. And the chewy noodles have a delicious sweet and sour taste. [Music] Thank you. Plus, the drinks, the nostalgic melon-flavored soda glasses, have a Showa-era vibe . [Music] Everyone had this when we were kids. We used to drink barley tea. And this wonderful space, Fukunaka-san, I’m sure you’ll be hooked if you go. I’d love to go too. I heard that Director Naito will be waiting, so please come and visit Fukunaka-san. Thank you. Yes. This is the first coffee shop to take you back to the Showa era. Next up is another nostalgic Showa era. I’m sure many of you will find this nostalgic. Which flavor is your favorite? There are over 10 varieties of Umaibo. And what’s even more surprising is this space. I’m here now. [Music] This space is packed with children’s dreams. This place goes beyond the concept of a confectionery shop. I agree. When you think of the candy store that opened six years ago, you probably imagine it as a small, private shop, but it’s so spacious and stocked with everything from nostalgic Showa-era items to ones you rarely see in supermarkets. I’ve never seen anything like it before. [Music] Wow. There are so many candy stores, how many varieties do they have? Yes. A whopping 2,500 varieties. 2,500. Do they have that many? Yes, they do. How big is this store? It’s 50 meters long. 50 meters? Yes. There are kids running around like they could fit in Tokyo . Is it okay to be excited about it? No, it’s not okay. [Music] Don’t run. I’ll stop you. Good kids, don’t try this at home. That’s right. It needs to be spacious enough to make you want to run. That’s right. They say they need a large space to attract the most customers. [Music] Within this spacious store, they told us about toys that are particularly nostalgic for the Showa generation. [Music] This is an airplane that was popular with the Showa generation. [Music] This is the first time I’ve seen one. This brings back so many memories. I miss both of you. You’ve become grandpas. How can I put it? It’s like a mutual respect. [Music] Yes, that’s right. And this one. Yes. Oh, is it this? A bamboo dragonfly. A bamboo dragonfly. A bamboo dragonfly. I’m sure you all know what a bamboo dragonfly is. Sato-san, I’ve tried it before, but I just couldn’t fly it properly. Is there a trick to it? Yes, there is a trick. Remember it. You just have to do it. Don’t try to fly it. So, I tried it again after a long time. Here you go. Let’s fly this together. Let’s go. Ready, set, go. Ah, Sato-san was better after all. No, no, doing it after a long time brings me back to my youth. Really. I was able to go back to my youth. I want to go back soon. [Laughter] I’m also starting to remember those innocent and pure days, but it’s only recently, is n’t it? Not really. It was about 10 years ago. It’s a wonderful cafe that both children and adults can enjoy. It’s like a department store. That’s right. Traveling from Sapporo to Hakodate by JR line is convenient because you can reserve tickets online. Simply enter the necessary information on your smartphone and check the important notes to easily and affordably purchase your tickets in advance . After reserving online, you can find your ticket before boarding the train. You can pick up your ticket at a reserved seat ticket machine or the green window. It was a trip to Hakodate that felt like the Reiwa era . And just as I expected, this time it perfectly combined both elements. [Music] No, I thought this was cutting-edge, but then there was Night’s retro cafe too . [Music] Yes. I want to go, and Dagashi-san, and that Gray Teru-san, have you seen Hakodate Teru-san again? Let’s go somewhere together again! The waitress and Montani Angel are big fans of Gray-san and even asked me to come with them. Let’s go. It’s not that easy, Tae-san? Right? Of course, the famous places that come to mind when you think of Hakodate are great, but visiting these slightly more off-the-beaten-path places might be a fun way to spend your autumn afternoon. Oh, and if you use the JR line, it’s really easy to get there. It was a great trip.
