Vlog khởi sự, “về vườn” ở tuổi 30 | “retire at 30s”, back to live in the countryside 🇻🇳
At the age of 30, I decided to “retire”, living in a Northern countryside, Vietnam. Born in Ninh Binh, working in Saigon, a few years of wandering in Australia, my time abroad has given me life experience and knowledge. But I always feel lonely and lost in a foreign land. I used to be attached but I never wanted to belong to any place. And after all, I have had a long journey to return to where I truly belong. And the journey of “retiring” started from this vlog. Another morning I woke up from before. I had a breakfast with my parents. Instead of putting on my shoes to go to work, I put on my boots to visit the garden. The fruit trees around the house were lush and green. Picking star fruit without having to pay a gold nugget =) Crossing the bridge to visit the garden. Picking indispensable vegetables and spices in the kitchen. Fresh red chili, juicy lemon. Fragrant dill – an indispensable spice for soup. Suddenly realizing that my garden looked so big from above. I was picking water spinach. This is the vegetable I craved when I was away from home. Today I “picked it for free” When in hometown, just taking a basket to the garden you will have a bounty of organic vegetables. This is the garden where my parents cultivated countless crops to raise me, to give me the opportunity to go far away to grow up and to return. Now I carry my bag to the local market. I have already planned the menu in my head “what to eat today”. Slowly driving my motorbike on the familiar village road, passing the rice fields that have bloomed, the river flows gently. The market scene is lively in every corner. When you go to the market, remember to “eat snacks”. When you go to the market, remember to “have snacks”. I pre-ordered fried cakes, because this cake shop is super delicious. Today I will cook crab soup. It has been many years since I didn’t cook this dish. And fried shrimp. I saw eggplant, I had to buy some to pickle and eat immediately. Don’t forget to buy tofu. Stop by the fruit cart, I choose dragon fruit the fruit that I crave but I don’t want to buy because it is too expensive in Australia. Visit the flower cart to bring some colors to home. When I get home, let’s unbox my shopping bag! Quickly put the bag of fresh crabs in the freezer to let them soften. Drain the tofu thoroughly before frying. The dragon fruit has such an eye-catching color, don’t forget to wash and drain it. So the kitchen has enough ingredients for today’s menu. Feeling so capable, I reward myself with a sweet donut, it’s delicious! Now for the flower arranging show =) I have white and green lisianthus, lilies, silver leaves.
And some wild flowers I picked around the house like reeds, candle grass… The flowers just need clean water, that’s it simply! Remember to wear gloves. Clean off any excess leaves on the flower stems. First, put in a vase of lilies. A bunch of candle grass in a wide-mouthed vase will be placed on the stairs. The wild and soft branches of reed grass. Put in a small, pretty, cool green lisianthus vase. The green and white lisianthus look very pleasing to the eye, so I will place it in a space close to the view. The silver leaves that give off fragrant essential oils will be placed in some locations around the house. Let’s see the small, pretty “flower exhibition” at home. Flowers for the living room. Tall and green candle grass put in a corner of the stairs. Soft reed grass. The corner of the house exudes the fragrance of silver leaves. Arrange the heart fruit and the vase of lilies to bring to the parents’ house – where there is an altar to pay respect to ancestors, with flowers, fruits, and incense sticks, and sincerity. A small vase of flowers for the family altar. “I can buy myself flowers” – so, two vases of pure white for myself in a private, gentle space. Prepare the eggplant, wash it. Prepare a bowl of clean water mixed with salt and lemon juice. Cut the eggplant into wedges and soak in salt and lemon juice. The recipe for the pickled eggplant salad requires: Ginger, galangal, garlic, chili, ground or minced all of them. I seasoned according to my ancestors’ advice =) : lemon juice, vinegar, brown sugar, chili sauce, fish sauce. Stir well to dissolve and blend the spices. Add with shredded lemon leaves. Soak the eggplant in the spices. Slice the onions. Cut the tomatoes into wedges to make the broth. The essence of the crab soup is the crab that has fainted from the cold, then washed it. I remember that in the past, we did not have a refrigerator or blender. Every time I peeled the crabs while they were still alive and wriggling, they would grab my hand and make it painful. Now that life is convenient and smart, the crabs that have fainted can be easily peeled off, pureed with a little salt and filtered with water. When I needed it, I remembered that I had forgotten to buy a sieve, so I had to borrow it from my parents, but the handle was broken, so I used it flexibly. Patiently filter the crab meat to get a pot of broth and cook it over moderate heat and remember to keep an eye on it. I’m confident in my ability to “multitask” in a 3-zone kitchen. Dry the tofu, cut into bite-sized pieces and deep-fry in oil until golden brown. On the second, sauté the green onion with hot oil, add the tomatoes, season, and cook with filtered water. When the tofu is golden brown, remove it one by one and drain the oil. In the same pan, add the sliced onions and sauté until fragrant. On the third, keep the heat at medium and pay attention until it boils, the crab meat will solidify into lumps of crab. Carefully scoop the lumps of crab into a bowl and wait, “if you like it, eat it all”! The sliced onions fry until golden brown Pour the tomato broth into the pot of crab broth. Continue to boil, simmer. Seasoning. I almost forgotten the sour taste of the rice until I was reminded: it must have a light sour taste of rice. Sliced green onions and dill to enhance the flavor of the soup. I have prepared some herbs to go with it such as: perilla, Vietnamese herb, lettuce, coriander… The eggplant salad has definitely absorbed the spices. Divide the crab soup evenly into each bowl. Pour enough broth. Sprinkle with dill and green onions for fragrance and eye-catching. Why did I choose to cook crab soup in my first vlog? This dish is quite risky and difficult to make, because I really want to cook a familiar dish for family meals. When enjoying, you must have all the dishes: fried tofu, fried onions, pickled eggplant, herbs to eat with… After lunch, I made a pot of tea bags and lavender flowers I picked from Australia. Peeled dragon fruit for dessert. Anyone else peel dragon fruit the same way I do? Have sipped tea and ate dragon fruit. At the time of filming this vlog, I had been “retired” for 2 weeks. I am still getting used to the rhythm of life and organizing my new life. And perhaps everyone is also “getting used” to my return. My background is as an author. with creativity and writing skills, I can do this work anywhere, even when I am busy making a living in a foreign country, I still maintain the habit of writing. Now I have “retired” to be able to focus on writing and work hard to explore the land of words of this life. My family loves the feeling of having lots of trees and leaves them around the house. Let’s plant trees with me! My soil formula includes: Coal slag to line the bottom of the pot will help drain water easily. Mix 3 types: garden soil + compost with rice husks + coconut fiber and vermicompost. Today, my family “admitted” new members to the “plant club”. a lucky tree is very suitable for the living room space. a lemon tree has produced promising fruit. The feeling of “returning to the garden”, living with the countryside, blending with trees, flowers and leaves… Even though I have to make a trade-off, I used to tell myself: a minute of effort in a foreign land can be exchanged for n minutes where I stop – my hometown. 5 fragrant rosemary bushes planted on the balcony. “I love my house with lots of trees.” Look at sunset! And then let’s cook dinner together! I have to carry the pot to ask for rice from my parent. Washing and cooking rice – the first survival skill that every Vietnamese child must know. The water spinach picker runs on rice – me =) I will cook shrimp stir-fried with star fruit. Wash the shrimp and drain. Patiently cut off all the sharp whiskers, marinate the shrimp with spices: salt, seasoning powder and cooking oil. Slice the star fruit into 5-pointed star slices. The sunset with the pot of rice in the kitchen reminds me of a poem that makes me feel touched when I am far away from home: “I am just a small wanderer / Hearing the sound of boiling rice makes me miss home.” (Pham Huu Quang) Now I am home and cooking home-cooked meals. Stir-fry the shrimp in a hot pan, the shrimp will release water, continue to stir-fry until the shrimp is firm, drain the water, then add sugar, continue to stir-fry. The sugar will caramelize, making the shrimp have a beautiful, eye-catching color. Finally, stir-fry the shrimp with the star fruit. The fried shrimp will be more flavorful when add with lemon leaves and green onions. Boiling water spinach is simple. Boil water, add a little salt and then put the spinach in to boil, then scoop it out onto a plate. Using the water from boiling water spinach to make soup with a blanched tomato, and season. Don’t forget the salted eggplant salad. The smell of warm cooked rice is the original, simple taste that makes people remember the taste of a home-cooked meal. A Vietnamese home-cooked meal is just simple like that. But sometimes we crave it but it’s not easy to find, only when we get home. Clean up, put kitchen waste in an airtight, odorless bokashi compost bin. Combine rosemary and silver leaves, they will give off a pleasant scent when you bathe under warm water. The evening is a quality time for yourself. Indulge in the ideal private space with the scent of the incense candle. and your favorite music to relax yourself. This morning, I still keep the habit of waking up early, for what? Not for success. I’m groomed and dressed up early in the morning, where to go? I went to church at 5am. I don’t dare to say I’m a good lamb of God. I just like the feeling of peace when I go to church. I remember a quote from the prayer: “Gratitude is the heart’s memory.” After all, I feel somewhat secure on the journey I’m taking. After the church, I went to buy Zero Waste-style breakfast. I brought glass containers to store the hot food. Then I slowly walked on the familiar village road to go home. When I watched the video of my hometown from above in the autumn morning, I felt both familiar and touched. I had breakfast with rice paper with fried onions, fried sausage. some herbs picked from around the garden, dipped in diluted fish sauce. A simple but delicious and filling breakfast. I smell the scent of magnolias, they still bloom every day. Pick some fragrant magnolias to put in my house. I can’t live without coffee. Making coffee is an indispensable ritual in every day of life. A cup of coffee will encourage my spirit. A new day in the journey of “retired at 30s” opens. I have started and just starting! I will be very touched if I receive wishes or encouragement from everyone on my journey of creating content about “retiring”. Thank you for being with me. Connect with me.
