10 Essential Tips for Japanese Convenience Stores
& Recommended Items Hi! I’m Samurai Junjiro! Hi! I’m Akanemaru! Convenience stores in Japan
are far more than just small shops. They offer many useful services
and helpful tips that can make your journey easier. In this video,
we’ll share 10 essential tips for Japanese convenience stores, followed by our recommended items. Be sure to watch until the end and use this guide to make
your shopping in Japan even easier. Chapter one: Eat-in Spaces Some convenience stores in Japan have “eat-in spaces” where you can enjoy the food you purchased right on the spot. Here, you can sit down and enjoy your bento, rice balls,
or even freshly heated hot snacks. It’s a convenient place to rest
when you’re tired from sightseeing, or when the weather outside is too hot or cold. These spaces are especially common in urban areas
or newer store types, usually equipped with tables or counters. However, not every convenience store has one,
so it’s worth using when you find it. It’s also important to follow basic manners
when using eat-in spaces. For example, avoid occupying the seat for too long
or speaking too loudly. Always throw away your trash in the designated bins
so the next person can enjoy a clean space. By making good use of eat-in spaces, your meals during sightseeing
will become much more comfortable. Chapter two: Free Use of Microwaves In Japan, most convenience stores
have microwaves available for use. When you buy items like bento, rice balls, or bread,
you can ask the staff to heat them for you right away. This service allows you to enjoy warm meals,
which is especially nice during cold seasons or late at night. If you have several items to heat,
you can ask them to warm everything together. In most cases, heating is completely free
and no extra charge is required. As a rule, don’t ask to heat things like ice cream
or chilled drinks, which are obviously not suitable. Some stores may allow self-service microwaves,
but for tourists, it’s usually easier to let the staff handle it. When visiting convenience stores in Japan,
make use of this free service to enjoy warm meals anytime. Chapter three: Hot Water Service In Japanese convenience stores,
when you buy instant noodles or soup, many stores provide free hot water. The hot water is usually available in dispensers
near the register or in the eat-in area, so you can pour it right away. This service is very convenient when you don’t have time
to sit in a restaurant or just want a light meal late at night. On cold winter days, being able to prepare
and eat hot instant noodles on the spot is especially appealing. However, not all convenience stores offer this service,
so it’s best to check at each store. Be careful when pouring the hot water,
as it can cause burns if spilled. By using this service, you can easily enjoy a quick meal
or snack inside the convenience store. Chapter four: Smartphone Charging Running out of smartphone battery during your trip
can be a real problem. Some convenience stores in Japan
offer smartphone charging services. In many cases, power outlets or USB ports
are located in the eat-in space, so you can charge while having a meal. Some stores also provide paid charging stations
or portable battery rentals near the register or counter. For example, with a service called “ChargeSPOT,” you can rent a battery at a convenience store
and return it at another location. Not every convenience store has charging options,
so you may not always find one. By making good use of convenience stores, you can avoid the stress of running out of battery
while traveling in Japan. Chapter five: Free Wi-Fi While traveling in Japan, mobile data can become expensive,
and foreign SIM cards may not always work smoothly. That’s when the free Wi-Fi services offered
at convenience stores become very useful. Lawson, for example, provides a network called
“LAWSON_Free_Wi-Fi” that anyone can use for free. Each session usually lasts up to 60 minutes,
and you can connect up to five times a day. When connecting, you may need to register your email address
or go through a simple login process. This is especially helpful when you need to look something up
or check your map app inside the store. However, since free Wi-Fi isn’t always secure, it’s best not to use it for online banking
or credit card payments. When you want to save data while sightseeing,
make the most of the free Wi-Fi at convenience stores. Chapter six: Trash Disposal In Japan, you’ll notice there are very few trash bins
in public areas, which can be inconvenient for travelers. That’s why the trash bins at convenience stores
are especially helpful. Most stores provide trash bins inside or outside so you can throw away packaging
or empty containers from items you purchased. However, the rule is that you should only throw away trash
from items you bought at that store. It’s considered bad manners to bring in unrelated trash
from outside and dispose of it there. The bins are usually separated into categories
such as “burnable trash” (combustible waste), “PET bottles,” and “cans/bottles,”
so you need to sort accordingly. Recycling rules are strict in Japan,
so proper sorting is expected. By using convenience store trash bins properly,
you can avoid small inconveniences during your trip in Japan. Chapter seven: Restroom Access In Japan, public restrooms are not always easy to find,
which can be inconvenient for travelers. Fortunately, many convenience stores have restrooms inside,
which can be a lifesaver. Whether in big cities or rural areas, most major convenience store chains
provide restroom access. If you suddenly need a restroom while sightseeing,
spotting a convenience store can bring relief. Although using the restroom is free,
it’s considered good manners to buy something small in return. Another great point is that convenience store restrooms
are usually clean and well-maintained, making them reliable for travelers. One thing to note is that even in 24-hour stores, restrooms may be unavailable for security reasons
or during cleaning. During your trip, convenience store restrooms
can truly be a reliable solution when you need them. Chapter eight: Copy and Print Services In Japan, almost every convenience store
has a “multi-copy machine.” With this machine, you can not only make copies
but also print, scan, and even send faxes. At first glance, this may not seem very useful for tourists. However, it can be very handy
if you need to print hotel confirmations, flight tickets, or event passes during your trip. The cost is affordable, usually about 10 yen
for black-and-white and 50 to 100 yen for color prints. Some machines have English menus, and you can print from a USB stick
or even through smartphone apps. It’s also useful if you want a physical copy of maps
or sightseeing information to carry with you. While you may not use it often, knowing about this service
can be a lifesaver when needed. During your travels, a convenience store copy machine
might just save the day. Chapter nine: Parking Availability Many convenience stores in Japan
have parking spaces in front of the store. This is especially common in rural or suburban areas,
where most customers arrive by car. On the other hand, in city centers and busy downtown areas,
many stores don’t have parking due to limited space. At first, this might not seem very relevant for tourists. However, if you plan to rent a car in Japan,
convenience store parking can be extremely useful. It’s perfect for taking a break during long drives
or stopping to grab food and drinks. Parking is usually free,
making it a convenient place to take a short rest. That said, convenience store parking lots
are not meant for long-term use. They should only be used briefly while shopping or resting. If you’re planning to rent a car during your trip,
remembering this parking option will make your journey easier. Chapter ten: ATM Access One of the biggest challenges for foreign tourists in Japan
is withdrawing cash. While credit cards are becoming more widely accepted,
many restaurants and small shops still only take cash. This is where convenience store ATMs
become incredibly useful. ATMs at 7-Eleven (Seven Bank), Lawson, and FamilyMart allow you to withdraw Japanese yen using foreign credit
or debit cards. They support major international brands such as Visa,
MasterCard, American Express, JCB, and UnionPay. Most of these ATMs are available 24 hours a day and can be found not only at airports and tourist spots
but also at regular convenience stores in town. Fees vary depending on the time of day and your card issuer, but it is often more convenient
and reliable than money exchange counters. The machines usually offer instructions in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, and Korean,
making them easy to use for tourists. When you need cash during your trip, finding a convenience store ATM is one of the easiest
and safest options. From here, we’ll introduce must-try items

  2. Hello my friends, very happy to see another vídeo from this channel, i always enjoy your content, sorry if i didn't watch the previous vídeo, but it was too long for me. I said that the first thing that i could do if on my first day in Japan it was to eat in a conveyor belt sushi, the second thing it would be buy groceries in a traditional Japanese convenience store.

  3. I very much like conbinis, as they are open 24/7, and they sell almost everything. When I want a drink or snack, they are always there, and I can also get other helpful things there. Also, its also great, that most conbinis have ATMs. In March for example, we ran out of cash on the first day of a 2 night stay in Matsushima Bay. We were so glad to find an ATM in a conbini.

  4. Perfect timing video! My brother and I are going to Japan in 3 days, and as much as I love Konbini, I know super markets are much cheaper and better variety of foods! Thanks!

  5. Some of the frozen food sold in conbinis looks good. However, when we are in Japan once a year or less, we dont want to eat frozen food heated up in a microwave. So I cant comment on those items.

The only 2 foods where I have a clear preference, are the curry pan from 7/11 and famichiki from family mart.

  6. My favorite conbini food is curry pan from 7/11. And thats by far. I mean, I dont care where to get a drink or a snack when in Japan. But if I crave something very delicious and unheathlty, thats what I want.

  7. Famichiki 4 life. I love that stuff. All of the other chicken is great as well, like, I wouldn't turn down any Japanese Combini chicken, but Famichiki is my favorite.

  8. Your videos have always come in handy! My older sibling and I will be visiting Japan in November for the first time, and we've used a lot of your content as references ^^

    Thank you as always!

  9. Big Japanese culture fan here! Your videos are so interesting and I love how cheap everything is in Japan compared to where I live in the UK and really want to go there for holiday

  10. For anyone going to Tokyo, don’t hold your breath finding a convenience store bathroom. I don’t remember ever finding ONE. I was there for 10 days.

  11. We really enjoy your videos and used many tips for our last trip. Could you do one for Sapporo/Hokkaido during non-winter months? Would love to get some tips for our trip in April next year. Thanks.

  12. You should add 7/11 new pudding+custard+cream: one of the best desserts ever eaten! really!!
