【函館グルメ徹底攻略12選】必見の朝市だけでなくご当地グルメから話題のスイーツまで!

Hello, it’s Mikki. This time, I’ll be introducing 12 comprehensive guides to Hakodate gourmet food. Hakodate is a port city located in southern Hokkaido. Here, you can experience a unique food culture that combines fresh seafood and foreign cultures. At the early morning market, you can taste seafood just caught that day, and in the bay area, Western sweets and cafes line the streets in historic buildings. In the city, the hearty local burgers and the locally loved yakitori bento are gaining popularity. There is also a wide range of food, from Japanese to Western cuisine and sweets, and traditional dishes from long-established restaurants coexist with modern menus in the same town. Experience the depth of this city, where history and culture live on, through the taste buds. This channel will bring you information to enrich your daily life, such as cafe hopping. If you would like to support us even a little, please subscribe to the channel. Please record this video and don’t miss the next one. By the way, you can check the Google Maps location of the store we’re introducing this time in the description of this video , so please use it as a reference when you actually visit the store. First, let’s start with Hakodate Morning Market. Hakodate Morning Market, which spreads out in front of Hakodate Station, started as a market for local residents around 1945, shortly after the war . Today, it is lined with about 250 stores and stalls, and is a tourist spot visited by more than 1.5 million people a year. The market is rich in fresh seafood , and Hokkaido’s representative seafood, such as squid, sea urchin, and scallops, is particularly popular , and a popular spot among tourists is the live squid fishing pond. If you have time, please try this out and experience its fresh charm. Now, what can you enjoy in Hakodate Morning Market? We recommend this place: Ikkatei Tabiji. It’s a popular restaurant known for its fresh seafood dishes . Located in the center of the market, it’s a popular restaurant visited by tourists and locals alike. The restaurant’s interior is bright and lively, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of the market . The dishes offered are seafood bowls and set meals, mainly made with seafood caught in the waters off Hokkaido . The contents change depending on the day’s catch, so you can experience different flavors every time you visit. They also have a wide range of dishes, from relatively affordable to luxurious seafood bowls, making it popular with a wide range of travelers. One of their most famous dishes is their signature live squid bowl, where transparent squid is served directly in a bowl, freshly taken out of the tank . It’s priced according to the market price, but this time, I was able to enjoy it for around 3,500 yen. As you can see, the squid is presented as it is , and when you pour soy sauce on it, it really starts to dance. In particular, by pouring soy sauce on the tip of the tentacles, you can watch it dance as you eat it, so I would definitely recommend you try it. Also, since it had just been served, the flesh is shining with a translucent glow. As you can see, when you pour a little soy sauce on it, the muscles react and start to move as if they are dancing, which is a spectacular sight. This phenomenon itself is proof of the high freshness of the squid and symbolizes the food culture unique to Hakodate. I hope you will enjoy it as one of your memories . Next, I will introduce the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse. The Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse was founded in 1869 by a merchant. The Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse has its roots in the group of warehouses built by Watanabe Kumashiro . It expanded with the development of Hakodate Port, and the remaining brick buildings were constructed from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period. Brick was used as a fire-resistant building material, and it served as an important facility supporting the safety of the port town. Four buildings of the current Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse have been renovated into commercial facilities. BAY Hakodate is lined with general stores and restaurants, and Kanamori Hall can be used as an event space. In History Plaza, there is an exhibition introducing the history of Hakodate at the time of the port’s opening , where you can learn about the cultural background of the buildings. And here is the Kanamori Western Goods Museum. The Kanamori Western Goods Museum is a store selling exotic dreams, with a wide variety of shops selling imported goods, household goods, antiques, and more. One place you should definitely visit in the Kanamori Western Goods Museum is SNAFFLE ‘S, a Western confectionery shop that represents Hakodate. Founded in 1998, SNAFFLE ‘S is a Western confectionery manufacturer with fans not only among locals but across the country . The Kanamori Yobutsukan store is conveniently located for tourists, and is always bustling with people looking for souvenirs from Hakodate. Their signature dish is the cheese omelette, a signature SNAFFLE’S dessert. It’s a fluffy, soufflé-style cheesecake, and one bite delivers a moist texture and rich flavor. You can also order individual soufflé-style cheese omelettes at the counter. While it may look simple, it’s made with fresh Hokkaido milk and cream cheese, making it a truly appealing treat. Its greatest feature is its light, melt-in-your-mouth texture . Unlike typical baked cheesecakes, its fluffy , almost melt-in-your-mouth texture is what makes it known as a magical dessert. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee with this treat, so you can refresh your palate and savor its rich flavor. However, please note that this omelette has a short shelf life, and even with ice packs, it will only last about six hours, so please be careful when carrying it home. Next up is CALIFORNIA. BABY I didn’t actually go inside this store, but they are known for their hearty American-style dishes, and their specialty Cisco Rice is especially famous, so I would recommend you to visit if you have the chance. Next up is Lucky Pierrot’s Bay Area flagship store. It is a symbol of local fast food originating in Hakodate, and not only the exterior but also the interior is eye-catching with its unique decorations. I will introduce another store in detail later, but what is distinctive about this Bay Area flagship store is the swings installed as seats. Such unique interior decor will entertain visitors, turning not only the food but also the space itself into a memorable experience. Next up is Hasegawa Store , located next to Lucky Pierrot. Hasegawa Store is a convenience store chain that operates mainly in Hakodate City and is sold at their stores. Their specialty yakitori bento is It’s also popular as a local soul food. And here’s the Lucky Pierrot Marina Suehiro branch I visited this time . It’s a local fast food chain that represents Hakodate. You can fully experience the charm of Lucky Pierrot here . The Marina Suehiro branch is a large store located in the bay area, making it a popular spot for tourists. The storefront is decorated with attractive Lucky Pierrot designs, and the vending machine sells Lucky Pierrot original drinks like Lucky Guarana, so I recommend buying some here and walking around the city. Since I had some time, I bought some Lucky Pierrot and enjoyed it while strolling around the bay area. Now, let’s take a look inside the Marina Suehiro branch. The spacious interior features table seating and large windows, creating an open atmosphere where you can enjoy a meal while overlooking the harbor. Lucky Pierrot operates over 17 stores, mainly in Hakodate City, and each one has a different theme and interior, so you can experience a different space each time you visit. The Marina Suehiro branch in particular has sea-themed decorations, so I recommend exploring the area. It’s also close to the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse, so it’s a great place to stop by while exploring the bay area. Each store also offers slightly different menu items , and the Marina Suehiro branch of Lucky Pierrot in particular sells a variety of limited edition and original goods, so many people stop by looking for souvenirs as well as food . Because of this, the Marina Suehiro branch is also known as a symbolic presence that connects tourism and food. So, what I ordered this time at Lucky Pierrot is by far the most popular set. For about 1,000 yen, you can enjoy this overwhelmingly popular menu item. It’s a set that allows you to enjoy all the flavors that represent Lucky Pierrot all at once. The main dish is the Chinese Chicken Burger. It’s a hearty dish that combines a generous amount of fried chicken coated in a sweet and spicy sauce with crispy lettuce and mayonnaise. The juicy flavor of the chicken and the aroma of the sauce are appetizing, and it has long been loved as soul food by Hakodate residents. This set also comes with french fries and a drink . The fries are topped with special curry-flavored spices. Other items include: On this day, we had lucky shakes and cafe lattes . We also had yakisoba on this day, and each order was quite large, so we recommend sharing it with a group. Next up is Hakodate Fusaya Daimon, which we visited on the first night . Located in the Daimon district near Hakodate Station, Hakodate Fusaya Daimon is a restaurant that serves a variety of dishes made with local ingredients. Its popularity among locals, as well as tourists, stems from its extensive menu and relaxed atmosphere. The interior is decorated in a Japanese style, with both table and counter seating, making it an easy-to-use environment for both solo and group dining. This restaurant is located in the Daimon district, which once had a bustling history as the downtown area of Hakodate, and the streets still bear the vestiges of that time. Located in the center of the area, Fusaya seems to be a dining hub that connects tourism and everyday life. Here we see the live squid, which was pulled out of the tank after we ordered. It’s also great that they have ingenious ways to entertain tourists by watching the live squid in this way. First, we have the appetizer and a toast with Super Dry. The menu has a wide range of dishes, from seafood, fried foods, grilled foods, and rice dishes, and is easy to choose from, from individual items to sets. The drink we chose was Hakodate Juice , a carbonated drink popular in Hokkaido called Co-up Guarana. It has a refreshing sweetness and unique aroma, and even when paired with a meal, it doesn’t leave a heavy aftertaste. Fine bubbles rise from the caramel-colored liquid, and with each sip, the slight bitterness enhances the sweetness. Next up is corn tempura and the live squid sashimi we mentioned earlier. Hakodate is also known as a squid town, and here too, fresh live squid sashimi is served. And this is corn tempura. It is a deep-fried dish made with Hokkaido corn, and has a strong sweetness. The squid bursts into flames in the batter, giving it a fragrant and sweet taste. As for the live squid , as I mentioned on Tabiji, when you add soy sauce, the squid tentacles begin to move, which is another appealing feature. Next up was the fried squid, which was recommended by the restaurant staff. Deep-sea fish called genge has a unique gelatinous texture. It is fried so that it is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside , making it a delicious local delicacy that can be enjoyed easily. Next up was garlic cheese rice, which is rice topped with cheese and garlic. It was a dish with a rich aroma that seemed to be intertwined with crab, and it was a satisfying menu that had a Western essence . Next was a dish with a concentrated, rich sweetness of crab miso , which I was happy to be able to get for 700 yen. Even a small amount has a deep flavor, so you can fully experience the blessings of the sea. Next was seafood omelet, a dish that seems to have seafood trapped inside a fluffy egg. The sweetness and umami were consistent, giving it a homely taste, yet luxurious finish. Next was raw tuna sashimi. Because it uses fresh tuna, not frozen, it has a moist texture and deep umami that melts in your mouth. The inside spreads and the last dish is Zangi, a fried chicken dish unique to Hokkaido. The juicy meat is coated in a sweet and spicy sauce, giving it a truly delicious taste. Next up is the Hakodate International Hotel where we stayed this time. We also had the breakfast buffet at the Hakodate International Hotel, and the gourmet food there was also full of highlights, so we will introduce it in this gourmet feature. For reference, we will also introduce the hotel, but the hotel we stayed in this time was a premium twin room for two, which cost about 22,000 yen, so it is a little expensive, but compared to the prices in Tokyo, this quality and low price is unbelievable. I thought it was attractive. It is a high-quality room on the upper floors overlooking the bay area, about 30 square meters in size, and the interior is decorated in calm colors, creating a relaxing stay. Now, this is the breakfast buffet at Hakodate International Hotel. You can make a reservation by entering a number from your room, so you can spend the waiting time in your room and arrive when you are called, which is also a recommended point. The breakfast buffet at Hakodate International Hotel is a popular service that is highly rated by guests, and is known for its wide variety and high quality of items, and is often featured in travel magazines and tourist media . The bakery corner offers a variety of menus such as croissants and Danish pastries baked in-house . The chef will grill your food over the counter kitchen, and there is a balanced menu of both Japanese and Western dishes, including meat , freshly grilled dried fish, boiled fish and egg dishes, and bacon. The dessert menu also features sweets made with Hokkaido milk and yogurt. There is also a wide selection of seasonal fruits and pudding cakes, so there is something to satisfy everyone from children to adults. The dishes made with local ingredients are not just a meal, but also have value as an experience of learning about the local flavors. Therefore, for tourists, it is a place where you can efficiently experience Hakodate’s food culture, and even for business guests, it is an important time to start a very fulfilling day. The greatest attraction is the Hakodate Dishes made with seafood unique to the hotel include fresh squid, salmon roe, scallops, and other seafood, and the corner where you can create your own seafood bowl is gaining popularity. You can enjoy your own original bowl by arranging your favorite ingredients on top of rice, and savor Hakodate’s abundant seafood from the morning. We hope you will enjoy this breakfast buffet and use it as a base to recharge your energy for sightseeing in Hakodate, which involves quite a bit of walking. We also recommend Hakodate Kokusai Hotel as a place to stay , and have an exquisite accommodation experience. Next up is Machikado Crepe. There are some restrictions on taking photos inside the store, but we hope you will enjoy the atmosphere at least. This is Machikado Crepe. is a popular sweets shop in the heart of Hakodate. Its convenient location and wide variety of menu items make it popular with young people and tourists alike. The dough is baked after an order is placed, so you can enjoy a crispy outside and a chewy inside. The fillings are varied, mainly fruit and chocolate cream, and seasonal limited items are also available. The picture on the left shows a ripe banana and caramel, and the picture on the right shows salted caramel and chocolate. Be sure to order a menu item that catches your eye. By the way, there is quite a long wait time. I visited around lunchtime on this day and waited for 3 hours, but you can also take a stroll while you wait. I recommend coming back at the estimated time when the noodles are ready to be baked and enjoying them . Next up is Hakodate Noodle Kitchen Ajisai no Beniten . Ajisai is a long-established ramen restaurant founded in 1930. When it comes to Hakodate ramen, shio ramen is the standard, and Ajisai is known as the representative of this. The Beniten is located in a location that is easily accessible to tourists, and you can enjoy a relaxing meal in a modern atmosphere. Hakodate ramen is characterized by its clear soup and thin noodles, but it has continued to evolve with unique improvements. It is recognized as a must-visit restaurant for locals and ramen fans from all over the country. Ajisai’s dishes are simple yet the ingredients and techniques shine through, and while experiencing the classic Hakodate ramen, it continues to adapt its appeal to modern food culture in many ways. This is Ajisai’s signature shio ramen, and its clear soup is its greatest feature. It’s made with a base of chicken and pork bones, and is combined with seafood from Hokkaido, such as kelp and scallops, to create a light yet rich flavor. This is the special salt ramen, topped with a generous serving of ingredients, including roast pork, boiled eggs, and vegetables, creating a gorgeous and satisfying dish. On this day, we also had gyoza dumplings. The skin is thin and crispy, and the inside is packed with the flavor of meat juice and vegetables. It’s a perfect match with the ramen, so be sure to order a set. Next up is a long-established Western restaurant. Gotoken was founded in 1879. Its history has progressed alongside the opening of Hakodate’s port, and it has played a major role in the spread of Western food culture. The main restaurant, Restaurant Sekkatei, is located in the Motomachi area and is housed in a building with a classical atmosphere. The founder, Mr. Goto, and the first head chef, Mr. Wakayama, worked hard to establish Western cuisine in Hakodate . As the eras changed from the Meiji to the Taisho and Showa eras, Gotoken established itself as a Western restaurant and is known as a prestigious establishment that welcomes members of the imperial family and important people from Japan and abroad. The interior of the restaurant has a calm atmosphere reminiscent of a Western-style building , and the classic furnishings and decorations convey the atmosphere of the past. Historical records and photographs are displayed on the walls, making it more than just a restaurant; it is a place that tells the history of Hakodate’s food culture. As you can see, the menu is very extensive. Currently, Gotoken is famous for its Western dishes such as curry, but each dish is packed with history and ingenuity. Gotoken’s cuisine, which combines local ingredients with Western techniques, is something that tourists say they want to try at least once when they come to Hakodate . The first dish we had was this British-style curry, which is truly a signature dish and a symbol of Gotoken. It has been passed down for 140 years since it began being served in the Meiji era. They also serve smoothies, as you can see here , so there is a menu that children can enjoy as well. My personal recommendation is this Russian cuisine set. This is a menu unique to Gotoken, which has been incorporating foreign cultures since its founding, and it combines dishes such as borscht and piroshki to allow you to enjoy a variety of dishes that go beyond the boundaries of Western cuisine. It is a dish that symbolizes the international food culture that Hakodate has cultivated , and it is a set that allows you to experience the history of Gotoken through food.It is more voluminous than it looks, so it may be best to come when you are quite hungry. You can change the flavor of this borscht by adding sour cream, so I hope you will enjoy this change of flavor. Now , this is Goryokaku Tower, which I also introduced in the previous highlights video, but this time I will introduce you to a gelato shop that you can enjoy at Goryokaku Tower. The observation ticket for Goryokaku Tower is 1,200 yen for general admission, but you can get in a little cheaper by purchasing advance tickets which can be purchased at convenience stores, so I hope you will consider such an idea. The original tower opened in 1964, and then in 2006 it was expanded to the current tower, which is 107 meters high. It has been rebuilt, and this observation deck is 90 meters above ground. I would like you to enjoy a panoramic view of Goryokaku’s star-shaped fortress from the glass windows. One place I would like you to try at Goryokaku Tower is MILKISSIMO. MILKISSIMO is a gelato specialty shop that originated in Hakodate. The Goryokaku Tower store is adjacent to a tourist attraction, making it easy to stop by during your stroll. I went to Rome last year, and you can enjoy the same authentic gelato I had there, so I would definitely recommend trying it here. The brand name is a combination of milk and issimo, which means the highest grade in Italian. MILKISSIMO offers the ultimate milk experience. There are always over a dozen flavors of gelato on offer. In addition to the classic milk and chocolate, you can enjoy limited-edition flavors made with ingredients unique to Hokkaido, such as haskap and Yubari melon, so be sure to order something that catches your eye. And finally, I would like to introduce KING, which I visited on my last night. This is KING BEAR’s Hakodate Ekimae branch, located right next to JR Hakodate Station. This soup curry specialty restaurant is popular with both tourists and locals alike thanks to its convenient location and spacious interior. The interior has a warm, wood-based feel, creating a casual yet relaxing atmosphere. This time, we tried several soup curries at KING BEAR. The restaurant is scheduled to open in April 2025, making it a highly anticipated spot. Its opening hours are until 9 p.m. , which is quite long, making it another reason to recommend it. First up, we have the Bear Burger and Colorful Vegetables menu, a dish featuring a juicy hamburger steak and plenty of fresh vegetables. The hamburger steak is rich in juice, and the flavor unfolds with every bite. The accompanying vegetables change with the seasons, and their colorful appearance whets the appetite. You can also choose from multiple levels of spiciness, so if you don’t like spicy food, we recommend going for a milder option. This is the crispy chicken and colorful vegetables, and this is the skin-on version. The main dish was fragrantly grilled chicken, with the crispy skin and soft, juicy meat creating an exquisite match. This was a luxurious menu that allowed you to enjoy 12 kinds of healthy seasonal vegetables all at once. The assortment featured a wide variety of mostly locally grown vegetables, and they were served in a variety of cooking methods, including steaming, grilling, and boiling. The spiciness levels ranged from 0 to 10, and you could have the very spicy level 5 at no extra charge, but as you go up to level 6 Hayabusa, level 7 Mashu Maru, level 8 Kurofune, level 9 Hokuto, and level 10 Super Hokuto, there is an additional 50 yen charge for each level, so if you’re confident in your ability to handle it, I recommend you pay the extra fee and give it a try . So, what did you think of our Hakodate gourmet special? I think I was able to introduce a variety of food, not just seafood, but also sweets, local gourmet food, fast food, crepes, gelato, and soup curry. There were some historic stores, but also some notable new stores that have just opened recently, so I think the city of Hakodate itself was really fun. I also did a lot of walking, visiting Goryokaku and Mount Hakodate, so I think I was able to recharge my energy and enjoy a variety of satisfying meals . CALIFORNIA I wasn’t able to actually try the menu at BABY or Hasegawa Store , but they are very popular restaurants so I would love for you all to try them for yourself. Now, from here on, we will move on to the after-talk, which is about Hokkaido, a treasure trove of gourmet food! What are your recommendations? I have personally visited Hokkaido mainly in Sapporo so far , but if you have any recommendations please let me know in the comments. Personally I love the Jingisukan I had in Sapporo, but I felt that the live squid I had this time is a charm that can only be found in Hakodate. I’m sure that you all have other recommended areas in Hokkaido besides Sapporo and Hakodate, and I’m sure there are some notable soul foods that you haven’t tried yet, so I would like to know about them and actually visit and experience them. If you don’t mind, please let me know. That’s all from Mikki . Thank you.
