Today is a holiday in Japan called Setsubun.
「今日は節分と呼ばれる日です」
It’s a holiday to celebrate the coming of spring.
「春が来たことを祝う日です」
Even though it’s still so cold! It’s kind of a funny holiday.
「まだ、とても寒いのですが、ちょっと変わった日なのです」
It involves a tradition of throwing dried soy beans.
「大豆をまく習慣があります」
It’s a lot of fun for children.
「子どもにとって、楽しい日です」
Throwing the soybeans represents getting rid of bad luck and welcoming good luck.
「大豆を投げることで、厄を払い、福を招き入れるのです」
As we throw the beans, we say “Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi.”
「豆を投げる時には『鬼は外、福は内』と言います」
The word “oni” means devil or demon in Japanese.
「『おに』というのは日本語で悪魔や悪霊のことです」
We are telling it to go away.
「それを追い払うと言っているのです」
It’s common at bigger celebrations for someone to dress up in red like a demon.
「赤鬼に扮した鬼を退治する祭事が行われることもよくあります」
Then the kids throw beans at the demon until it leaves!
「鬼が逃げるまで、子ども達は豆を投げます」
It sounds scary, but it’s mostly fun for the kids.
「恐ろしいことのようですが、実際は多くの子が楽しんでいます」
But some of the little ones do get scared though.
「たまに怖くなってしまう小さい子もいますが」
Another tradition today is that we eat our age plus one in soybeans!
「今日はその他にも、年の数より一つ多く豆を食べる習慣があります」
So since I am 32, I eat 33 dried soybeans.
「私は32歳なので、33の豆をたべます」
But it’s too much!!
「でもちょっと多過ぎます！！」
