Cozy LIFE in Japan 🇯🇵: Celebrating Birthday with Homemade Yakitori

Hello, everyone around the world To celebrate Suzu’s birthday, I’m thinking of becoming the owner of a yakitori restaurant 😄🎉 – What is it?
    – Hmm, I wonder – Let’s open it
    – I hear a noise. When did you buy it? – I bought it in advance
    – I didn’t notice… I tore it a little – No way! This is the one I wanted! – Right
    – Wow – Alright then, since we bought this, I’ll go out and get all the ingredients for yakitori tomorrow – I’ll have it ready, so come home and enjoy it
    – Are you going to make yakitori tomorrow? – Wow! Yay! – Here we go. Oh, wow. Amazing – It’s big – Put it here?
    – Yes. Line them up here and grill them – So happy we can have yakitori at home
    – Haha, can’t wait – You can change the angle like this
    – Oh, really? – Wow, it’s amazing~ Suzu went to work in high spirits 😄 As for me, I went shopping in the morning 🛒 What I love about yakitori is that you can enjoy all kinds of different cuts of meat I keep reaching for this and that 😁 I can’t forget gizzards… I actually really like chicken tender too Liver and heart are a must👌 Let’s try making her favorite pork kebab Supermarkets are quiet on weekdays, so shopping is smooth We have to eat vegetables too 😁 I went with three veggies that were surprisingly a hit at the yakitori shop 🍅🫑🍄 I almost forgot the candles! I started feeling the weight and thought I might’ve overdone it—but there’s no turning back now! 😅 Okay, my shopping mission is complete! Well, it’s past lunchtime, so it’s about time to start getting ready I grabbed the fruit sandwich Suzu was craving on the way home from the store I’ll try arranging this into a cake 🎂✨ I spread the cream evenly For the topping, I’m going with golden kiwi—Suzu’s current favorite 🥝✨ It wasn’t easy, but I gave it a stylish little touch 😄 I finished by decorating it with cream ⭐️ I got better at piping cream towards the end 😄 I fill in the gaps Next, I’m going to make chicken meatballs The tsukune at the yakitori place I used to work at had cartilage in it—and it was so good! I’ll try to recreate those tsukune! Was cartilage always this hard to cut…? Knife out, scissors in! ✂️ Crush as finely as possible Add 300g of ground chicken to 50g of cartilage I think it had a lot of sesame seeds in it 🤔 5 tbsp in total😁 Don’t forget the onions 🧅✨ My favorite staff meal when I worked at the yakitori place was definitely tsukune over rice—so good 🤤 1 tbsp of rice flour, 1 of tbsp sake, 1/3 of tsp salt A little pepper Once it’s well mixed, let it rest in the fridge until it’s time to skewer In the meantime, I’ve got to prep all the ingredients I bought! At a yakitori shop, the prep work always takes the most time… Prep’s finally done—can’t believe I bought seven different things. Might’ve gone a bit overboard 😂 But I have no choice but to do it! Gizzards are easy to skewer, so they’re nice ✨ The more I panic, the more I freeze 😑 I want to get it all done before Suzu gets back… but… – Ah… Suzu’s already back. Welcome home – Don’t look
    – Hahaha – Looks like it was tough
    – I didn’t make it in time… – Like this?
    – Yep. Then you kind of wrap it around the stick – Do I flatten it after this?
    – Nah, round is better – Okay
    – That looks nice – This is harder than I thought
    – Be careful—the ends come off easily – How do you do this?
    – Like that. Just make sure there aren’t too many gaps – Got it We ended up turning the birthday celebration into a yakitori chef experience 🤣🧡 – It’s fun though. Makes me think of my old job
    – Oh, that’s cool We shared some memories from before we even met Plus, we made some staff-meal-style tsukune on the side I was really happy when Suzu cheerfully helped out, saying, “It’s important to celebrate yourself too!” It was the same view as always, but today it felt a bit more special. A day to remember ☺️ – Where I’m from, roast pork is kind of a big deal
    – Oh, I didn’t know that! – The miso sauce they serve with it is kind of famous
    – I don’t think I’ve ever had it before – Yakitori means miso sauce to me
    – Huh, interesting Yakitori is a classic Japanese dish, and we love how the ingredients and flavors change from region to region 😋 I’m whipping up some avocado salad to go with the yakitori Just a simple salad—just alternate slices of avocado and zucchini! Seasoning is simple: olive oil, lemon, and pepper Finally, add plenty of Parmesan cheese 🧀✨ – Now let’s make a miso sauce that goes well with yakitori – I added more miso than 50g… oh well! (15g over 😅) – 1 tsp of ginger – 1 tsp of doubanjiang 1 tbsp of sake, 1 tbsp of mirin 1/2 tbsp of soy sauce, 2 tsp of sugar Put in all the seasonings, then heat It’s done when it’s this thick and sticky ✨👌 – You even brought out the table lol – Are you the yakitori master or what? lol – Prep is all done – That’s a restaurant-level amount of meat lol – Okay, I put together a yakitori menu—pick whatever you’d like to order – A menu? Haha
    – Salt or sauce—your choice – I can choose anything?
    – Uh-huh, check the back too – Max 7 skewers per order
    – Then, I’ll start with the classic negima – Wait a sec before I start grilling
    – What’s up? – Yakitori chef mode – This feels legit. You’re pumped! 😄 – Okay, here we go. What’ll you have? – Yes, I’ll have the negima please – Negima, coming up
    – Then liver – Liver, coming up
    – And neck This scene is just like a yakitori restaurant! 🥹🤤 – Last one, shiitake
    – Shiitake coming up – Um, by the way… can I start eating this salad? 😅 – Oh yeah, feel free to eat the salad – Wow, it looks so delicious – Amazing, you really need this to get that perfect char – That’s right
    – It’s spinning around – I’ve had the salad first – Here you go
    – It’s a stylish salad – Mmm, so good. Zucchini’s great!
    – Right? – It’s refreshing and pairs nicely with yakitori – Yummy – Didn’t film it, but this is neck. It’s super delicious – It’s super juicy, Moriyan
    – Really? – Alright, here comes the next one. It’s heart
    – Mmm! Good! – Whoa, heart’s here too. It’s heart! – Alright, grabbing the heart. This is seriously like a real yakitori shop! – Amazing, right?
    – Mmm! – Is it good?
    – Yes! – What are you doing there?
    – Umm, well… – Chicken tender… with umeboshi on top – Definitely good – Wow, looks so tasty – Mmm, it’s hot – Soft and tasty – Dip it in lots of sauce
    – Looks amazing! – I’ll take a picture – My mouth is watering – Then I’ll have the liver – This is fantastic – I’ll have it with the sauce
    – Here you go – Mmm! – This is too good
    – It’s really tender – Cool – I’ll just go with the chef’s choice now lol
    – It’s turned into a chef’s course. lol That’s a lot! – Busy day, huh?
    – Business is booming today – It’s a huge success – Oh, even the owner’s eating now lol – It’s the staff meal
    – Hahaha! lol That’s right lol – Oh, by the way, I’ve got orange juice. Want some?
    – Really? Yes, please! – There are four kinds
    – Whoa, these ones looks super tasty – It’s my favorite mandarin orange juice – This is super tasty juice from Ehime. How did you find it? – I saw it at some supermarket
    – Really? – I’ll take the ponkan one – So good. I’d totally get a refill – Okay. Here you go, owner
    – Thank you – I’ll enjoy having this – Ahh. Delicious. – Super refreshing. The perfect combo – Alright, let’s try the miso sauce one
    – That’s my miso sauce, right? – Here you go
    – Of course it’s delicious – The smoke got intense, so we turned on the fan—sorry if it’s a bit loud now – That wind chime sounds so nice. It’s a real summer night – Maybe even the wind chimes are happy with the delicious smell in the air? 🤩 – This is pork with miso sauce – It’s really delicious. Moriyan did such a great job grilling it – Mmmm!! – Good?
    – The more I chew, the better it tastes – Try it
    – Okay… Whoa! – It goes so well with the miso, right?
    – Totally. So good – One hand eating, one hand working lol – It’s a two-sword style lol – The tsukune’s almost ready!
    – Whoa, it’s so neat! – Add plenty of sweet sauce and enjoy it as Tsukimi Tsukune – Whoa, that looks amazing – Let’s break the yolk – Aaaahhhh – Looks so good – I’m drooling… ahhh!! – I’ll enjoy having this – Mmm!!! This is the best. Seriously delicious – This flavor is insane
    – Alright, I’m making one for myself too – Yup! Mmm! This is really, really good – Are you too busy to eat?
    – I’m fine – Super delicious
    – Delicious – Thanks.
    – I’d love to do it again – Definitely! – Wow! Amazing! – I’ll put the candles on
    – What a cake! – Amazing, huh? You’re 32
    – I’m 32 already? – Three…
    – Three? – Three and two – It’s three and two lol This birthday cake is a sweet memory for me—Moriyan prepared so much for it 😊🎉🎂 – Ready? One, two… Happy birthday to you 🎂🎶 – Yeah! Hooray! 🎊😁 – Looks yummy! – Yay! It’s loaded with my favorite kiwis – Cute and colorful
    – True – Colorful cake – I’ll enjoy having this
    – I’ll enjoy having this – Mmm! It’s delicious! – It’s so fluffy!
    – It’s different from regular cake, but it’s really good – I like the texture of this cake
    – Yeah, so yummy – But I wonder… is eating it with a fork the right way? lol – Or should we be using our hands? lol This day was the Tanabata Festival (July 7th 🎋) Actually, two days later—on July 9th—it’s my mom’s birthday 😊 We came to Kappabashi to find a birthday present for my mom 🎁 I found the product I had my eye on beforehand 👀✨ – Is this for pickles?
    – You put the salt in first, then place this weight on top – To squeeze it My mom’s been trying out all sorts of pickles lately, so I thought this would be perfect for her 😊 – I hope Mom likes it
    – Yeah – I hope she’ll be happy with it – Now we’re going to wrap Mom’s birthday present – Wrapping time
    – Yeah – That said, I’ve never done it before, so I’m not really sure – Let me do it
    – Really? – I got my mom a pickling glass that’s perfect for making quick pickles – Copper ions? It says “Pickling Master” on it – Hope this makes her a pickling master so we can eat lots of delicious pickles lol – And the second one is a nice vinegar that Moriyan and I chose together – This vinegar is really popular—lots of famous chefs recommend it – Because she mentioned wanting to use better-quality seasonings – We chose a vinegar that’s been loved for many years in Kyoto ✨ – Tape it here
    – Got it – Thank you sticker – Thank you – Okay
    – Okey – Fold this part down along the corner – When did you learn this? He pretended he learned it from his part-time job, but it turns out he looked it up just to wrap my present 🤣✨ – Done wrapping! Hope she’ll be happy
    – That’d be nice Today, we’re visiting my parents’ house to give my mom a present 😄 Getting gifts is great, but giving them is even more exciting 😆🧡 Just like my mom and dad—always bickering, but clearly close 😁✨ – Welcome back
    – I’m home – We’re already filming
    – Okay, got it lol – So cool in here
    – The room next door’s just storage, so better keep it shut – Feels so good
    – Time to eat, right? – Yeah
    – It’s got water, so help yourself – (Alright… I think I’ll go give this to my mom now) – Hey, Mom
    – What’s up? – Happy birthday
    – Oh my gosh! – Thank you so much – What is this? – I heard you’re making nukazuke
    – Oh! Nice, nice. Looks good – This is a copper plate to keep the veggies bright
    – Good. I’ll try it – This container is for making lightly pickled veggies
    – I see – What is this?
    – This is used as a weight – I see~ – It’s got a lid too…
    – Pretty stylish – Hope you’ll make lots of tasty pickles with this
    – I’ll make some next time you visit – You always make those salted rice malt pickles, right? – Leave cucumbers like this, and they lose moisture
    – Oh, I like that – After it’s done, you change to this lid
    – Alright, I understand – You found something really good. Thanks – We went to Kappabashi
    – Oh, really? – I want to make nukazuke, but my fridge is tiny… – This summer, if I don’t put it in the fridge, it’ll definitely get moldy – So everyone, Mom will show us the nukazuke after summer lol – Please come again then Why I’m measuring her foot is because… The store was too crowded last time, so I’ll order the shoes online for her It’s important to check the size of her feet carefully 🤓 – The size is 22.5cm as mom said I’m glad that she liked the present 😊👍 – Mom, what color do you like? – Eh… Gray, gray! – Gray? I’ll find it Dad also wants shoes, so I decided to take them to another store next time while sightseeing 😄 – I’ll bring them then
    – Yes, please~ – Finally, add the dressing – Please bring
    – Thank you – Smells good
    – Luxurious for the morning – So fancy. I don’t usually eat this much – Amazing We arrived early, and she was waiting with freshly made, hot rice 😊 – Soy sauce koji?
    – This is the taste of soy sauce koji… – This is onion sauce
    – Wow – What’s this dressing?
    – I think this was a Valencia orange – So stylish
    – Just mixed it up – I see. Let’s eat then
    – Was natto there? – Yes
    – Got it – Should I bring some hot tea? – I’ll enjoy having this
    – I’ll enjoy having this (Yes, please~) – Looks good. This is my favorite – Is it dried daikon?
    – That’s right – This has clams in it, right?
    – Yeah, it’s delicious – It tastes like broth, right? – It couldn’t be better
    – Yeah She even sneakily prepared natto, which Moriyan loves 😁 – This is delicious
    – This dish makes you eat more rice – Yummy
    – Yes – Delicious!
    – Amazing – The salmon is delicious!
    – Taste good – I love it – It’s good without soy sauce The grilled salmon seasoned with homemade spices is great 😋 – Thank you for the meal
    – I’m glad you enjoyed it Next time, we’ll share a relaxed day at my parents’ house. 😊🙌 Stay tuned Thank you for watching until the end. Have a peaceful weekend 🌿

    5. !!! I JUST FINISHED making some quick pickles (or “quickles” as I’ve heard them called)! I did two types: one, “American style” (also called “refrigerator pickles”) with 2c cold water, 1/3c vinegar, 1 tbsp salt, 2 tsp sugar, pepper , garlic and fresh dill. Put cukes in a canning jar and pour vinegar mixture over spears of soft-skinned cucumbers and the dill — not Persian or standard cucumbers but “pickling” cucumbers if you can get them. The Persians get too soft and the standard cuke’s skin is too tough. “English” cucumbers work very well too.) Second, I did an “Asian style” using thin slices of carrot, radish and Persian cucumbers, with Nakano seasoned rice vinegar and a chunk of ginger). I let them sit in the fridge for two days before I start devouring them. I don’t know how “authentic” the Asian style ones are but they are DELICIOUS on sandwiches! The American-style ones I eat alongside a sandwich or burger.

I’m envious of the jar you got your mom! It’s so beautiful and I love that it has a weight to keep them submerged. I’m going to have to look for something similar.

Love you guys and your wonderful videos!❤
