[小寒]七草粥で無病息災を願う|お正月花材で箸置き作り|季節のvlog

Living with 24 seasons by KAKA & RURU The 23rd of 24 solar terms, Minor Cold In 2024, Minor Cold is from 1/6 to 1/19 The weather turns frigid as the cold season begins. Minor Cold and the next season, Major Cold, are the coldest days of the year. 1/7 is the day called Jinjitsu no Sekku: one of the 5 seasonal festivals, which literally means person-day festival On this day, there is a custom to eat “Nanakusa porridge,” rice gruel containing the seven spring herbs The purpose is to pray for good health in the new year and also to rest the stomach and intestines weakened by the New Year’s feast and festive sake. Suzuna (turnip) and suzushiro (radish) are sliced In salted water, boil the turnips and radish, beginning with the hardest ones. Once boiled, set aside on a plate The other herbs are also boiled quickly in boiling water The other herbs are placed in a dish and boiled in water. Cut into small pieces and squeeze out the water Make porridge (this time from rice) Flowers for New Year’s decorations Make chopstick rests with these while making porridge I made a chopstick rest that is somewhat congratulatory! While we’re on the subject of congratulations, let’s make the table setting look festive as well When porridge is ready, add salt. Boiled seven herbs are also thrown in Mix and it’s done Each of the seven herbs has its own meaning and benefits Japanese parsley: grows in a competitive manner → competes for victory
digestive, antifebrile, appetite stimulant Nazuna: greens so pretty that you want to pet them → stroking them to get rid of dirt
good for liver and high blood pressure Gogyo: a lucky charm representing the “body of Buddha”.
Good for throat problems and coughs Hakobera: grows and spreads everywhere → infested with prosperity
Used as a stomachache remedy and toothpaste Hotoke-no-za: leaves look radial → looks like a Buddha’s pedestal
Regulates the stomach and intestines and increases appetite Suzuna (turnip): Flower shape resembles a bell → bell to call gods
Good for digestion and prevention of colds Suzushiro (radish): pure white appearance → clean and white without dirt
promotes digestion I appreciated it more when I ate it after knowing its meaning and efficacy Chopstick rests, still in use Kagamimochi candles to be lit By the way, Kagamibiraki is held on 1/11
(What you are eating now is a regular rice cake) Kagamibiraki is also an event to pray for good health This is a year in which I have tried to learn more about events and customs. I realized that there are many events and customs to wish for “good health” and “to ward off the plague. I think that customs, etc., are a form of folklore that expresses our ancestors’ wish to protect their descendants from bad luck and disaster I want to remember to be thankful for being healthy and living safely And I thought that calendar events would be a good reminder of those things! Plus: a New Year’s story My relatives are gathering at my house, so I baked a galette des rois! Galette des Rois is a traditional French pastry to celebrate the New Year A small pottery called a “fève” is tucked inside. It is said that the person who finds a fève inside when he or she cuts it into pieces will have good luck for the whole year! Simple baked pastry with almond cream wrapped in pie crust Patterns are made with a knife (I think I cut a little too deeply…) Even the leftover dough is dressed up Baking time I still feel like I cut in too deep, but I’ll call it good that I can see the pattern well 🤣. I’m going to have fun and see who gets the fave! The two of us, KAKA & RURU, prepare the food. We also made fish marinated in sakekasu (sake lees) and Chives Tsukune with soy sauce malt, which have appeared in past videos.
We are glad they enjoyed it! Wishing you a healthy and happy new year!
