Vietnam Street Food in Saigon – SIZZLING Vietnamese Steak and Eggs + Street Food in Ho Chi Minh City

Oh, wow. Look at that, in all those juices. Ooh… Mmm! Hey, everyone, I’m Steph. Chris is behind the camera,
and we have made it to Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam,
where the weather is a heck of a lot warmer, and the flavours of the food
are bold and sweet. We have such a big, exciting day planned
for you today, eating some incredible local foods, and we’re starting it all off
with a meaty, sizzling breakfast. Come on, let’s go Here we are. First meal of the day. And we have something
very unique for here in Vietnam. This is Bò Né,
and It’s like a Vietnamese steak and eggs. Just look at this. This is so different
than the typical Vietnamese food you get. We have a sizzling hot plate that is
in the shape of a cow, which is so cool. We’ve got some fresh marinated
beef here, an egg, a lovely scoop on paté, and it is just sizzling,
piping hot on this plate here. It’s a very popular breakfast here in
Ho Chi Minh. And you can see the influence of the French
with the bread that we’ve got on the side here. Look at this
delicious looking fresh French bread. As well as just a very American style
of cooking as well. So it’s very different. So we also have a bunch of fresh veggies on
the side here. We’ve got a nice… Ooh, soy sauce here. As well as a little salt and pepper. And, you know what? Got some fresh onions, tomato, lime. I think I’m just going to put some of these right
on the hot plate, just to kind of cook up with the meat there, because nothing better
than some cooked veggies. All right. Squeeze a little bit of lime
all over the whole thing. Yes. Oh, I’m starving. This smells so good. This whole place smells incredible
here in this morning. Ooh, look how crispy and fresh that bread is. Oh, wow. Look at that. Okay. Let’s get some of this nice
fresh beef here. Some of these onions. Get some of this nice paté. And look at this egg here. Ooh! Oh, wow. Look at that. In all those juices. Oh, my gosh, that looks incredible. All right. First bite of our Southern
Vietnamese cuisine here. Mmm. Mmm. The flavour of that beef… wow! That is incredible.
You can really taste the marinade. I believe we bought oyster sauce. Fish sauce.
Maybe a bit of soy sauce right there. Honestly it’s just so savoury
with a bit of a sweetness to it as well, which is really nice. And that paté… mmm. Ooh. I love paté in any type of banh mi, whether it’s the actual banh mi sandwich,
or just a bread, anything like that here in Vietnam,
adds such a richness to it. And with that egg. Oh, my gosh. And the beef juices,
and a bit of the onion too. This is an incredibly hearty and
comforting breakfast. Mmm. And that bread is
so crispy and delicious. Wow. This is just got like, everything
you could want in a breakfast, this is incredible. I love how everything cooks up so quick. The hot plates are piping hot. He puts the beef in, and it just sizzles
right up. The egg cooks super fast
right after, pretty much instantly. I just want to try a piece of this
marinated beef on its own. Look at that. Super juicy.
Just cooked in its own juices like that. Oh, my goodness. Mmm. Just so rich and flavourful, and savoury. Ooh, and the beef. Such a nice flavour. Very good quality. That is so good. I love how different
this dish is for a Vietnamese food. We’ve never actually
had something like this. You can really see the different influences
of the other cultures here in Vietnam, but this place itself is such
great place to get it, I feel like. So much history here. This is such a popular place that’s been around for over 30 years. They’re pumping out so many of these,
the fire that this guy is creating at the front, is just insane!
And it’s super busy too, because it’s very local breakfast. It’s very quick,
which is great, super hearty, full of calories, like the perfect thing you want to start your day. And between this juice from the meat and ooh, let’s get a nice dip
of this soy sauce here too. Mmm. Ooh, that is so tasty. It’s like a sweet soy sauce,
because the soy sauce here… Especially down in the south,
food is so much sweeter than the north. Ooh. That’s really tasty though. Mmm. Just what we need to start our food
tour here in Ho Chi Minh. Ooh. Just… perfect.. Mmm. Thank you! Thank you, see you again. See you again, thank you. Oh, they’re so nice and friendly. Amazing. All right. Let’s continue this Saigon food tour. Come on. There are so many bikes
here in Ho Chi Minh City. Like, hundreds of thousands that pass by
when you’re walking along the street at any given time. It’s like chaos, but like controlled chaos. So cool. Up next,
we’re going to go for some interesting leafy beef wraps. Hello. Ooh! Ooh. I think they’re
making some fresh spring rolls as well. We’re going to get some of those too. We are here at this local spot right
on the side of the road for Bò Lá Lốt. Now, this is betel leaf beef wraps, and
you can see how green and cool these look. So the wraps are made with minced beef that’s
mixed with garlic, onions and some spices. And they’re wrapped in that betel leaf. We saw the raw ones over there,
and they look so green. But it’s cool when they’re cooked up
and grilled up on that charcoal grill, how soft they end up being. And it looks like
it’s on the bed of these vermicelli squares. Look how intricate,
it looks like spiderwebs, almost. Look at that. So cool. We have some leafy greens to make some wraps
with, along with some nước chấm, that fish sauce, along with the umm…. the mắm nêm fermented fish sauce. Yeah, that is a little pungent. And we also got some Gỏi Cuốn,
which are fresh spring rolls. And you can see here, these are popular in Ho Chi Minh City
and the south of Vietnam as well. Look at those. We have shrimp with vermicelli rice noodles
in there, slices of pork with pork fat. And look how fresh that looks with lettuce
and green onion in there as well. Wow. So cool. Okay, but, I want to start with those
betel leaf wraps. So to start,
we have our raw rice paper here. And just look how thin these sheets
of rice paper are. So we have to dip it into our water,
to just get it a little bit wet. So cool. And I love the DIY. Do it yourself
version of the Vietnamese food. Look at that. Okay. As soon as the rice paper hits
water, they, like, shrivel up. Look at that. Okay. Let’s get some of these perilla leaves
and nice fresh herbs in there. And, of course… Look at these. Our better leaf wraps, our Bò Lá Lốt. Look at that, peanuts on the top there. Oh, and look at that beef. Wow. Get some lettuce on there
as well as our fresh vermicelli. Look at that. I just love how much of the fresh herbs
you get. Like… Look at all of this lettuce. It’s like a whole heart of lettuce here. And so much green, I love it. All right, let’s give this a nice wrap here. Oh, these guys are so sticky. Wow. Okay. This one kind of broke apart
a little bit, but it’s okay. Let’s dip it in our nước chấm. Ooh… Little fish sauce in there. Okay. Let’s try this out here. Mmm. Oh… wow! That beef is so tasty. Look at that. But what’s the flavour punch, is that betel leaf? It’s almost like, peppery and green tasting. Just really, like, almost healthy tasting, but a really strong,
almost like, peppery flavour. That is delicious. And with all those fresh greens,
and the vermicelli and the rice wrap, it just adds
such a nice veggie crunch to it. Okay,
I want to try this pungent mắm nêm here. that fermented fish sauce with it again. Again. Ooh, that’s so, so… smelly. Is what the word is. But, let’s try it out. Mmm. Ooh… It’s actually pretty sweet. That is super surprising because I was expecting this
to be really fishy tasting and pungent because of the one in the north
that we’ve tasted, but, this one is so sweet. That is really good, actually. Now, I want to just try one of these guys
on their own there. Let’s break it apart. Oh, wow. Look at that. The betel leaf is just so delicate there,
you can see. Mmm. Ooh. The beef is actually juicy
when you bite into it. Mmm. So much onion flavour in there. Oh, that is really good. Let’s get a little ultimate sauce bite here, with both our sauces. Mmm. Oh yeah. All right, let’s try one of our Gỏi Cuốn. Our fresh spring rolls, again. Look at these little spring roll bullets. So good. And we have a nice peanut
sauce to dip it in as well. Look at that. All right, Ooh, I love the peanut sauce. Dip. Look at all that green onion! Wow… Look at all that. All right, here we go. Mmm. Mmm. Those are packed. Look at that. Mmm. Oh, I think there’s mint and cilantro
in there. It’s a pretty strong taste. But, wow. Just soft with the vermicelli,
crunchy with the fresh veggies. And that shrimp is so plump,
with that little bit of pork too, just adds that fattiness to the fresh spring roll. But, the best part is definitely that peanut sauce, which is actually surprisingly
really sweet as well. So, the flavour’s here in the South
so far really are… sweet. Wow. Just look at that. Mmm. Look at that shrimp. I really love the uniqueness
of this dish. The use of the betel leaf really imparts
such a special flavour onto that beef. Just so unique and different. And again,
just how you just make your roll yourself is always such a fun experience
here in Vietnam. And, just being here right on the road too. This is Vietnam. This is Saigon street food at its finest, and… Ooh, just so, so tasty. Mmm. I just realized I dipped that in the peanut sauce. That’s amazing! Our next little snack is going to be some nighttime
savoury pancakes. Yum! Oh, wow. Look at this. So cool. Hello. So, here we have our little savoury plate
of Bánh Căn. Now these are a rice flour pancake. And she put a little bit of egg in there. But the cool thing is,
is that they’re cooked in like, those little terracotta moulds
with little hats on, and there’s charcoal underneath, actually. So, you saw the fire. Yeah. The fire just shoots up out of it,
like a volcano almost. And it’s cool. It actually gives them,
like, quite a smoky smell. And even underneath. Let’s see. Oh, they’re super sticky. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, look at that, charcoal. And look at this guy too, yeah. They’re really nice and charred
from that charcoal there. So we got “Thập Cẩm”, which is a mixed. So we got shrimp. We have one with squid, beef, quail egg. Yeah, quail egg. I think like, a plain one. And then there was something else… Clams! Basket clams. Okay, so. Well so, yeah,
these look and smell really good. All right. Cute little snack. Cheers. Look at the little like,
little holes in them. All right. Mmm. Mmm. Ohh… interesting. Very eggy, mmm. They actually have like, a soft
almost like moist and chewy texture. Not actually what I was expecting. Yeah. You can see in there, they’re actually very soft on the inside
and crispy on the outside. On the bottom yeah. But, they actually do have quite
a smoky flavour from a little hole over there, form the charcoal. Mmm. Tastes the shrimp. And the beef. Ooh, all right. And they’re actually kind of plain in flavour. Mmm hmm. Mmm. But, we’ve got a little dipping sauce
or like a broth kind of thing here. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Look at that beef. The beef’s actually quite nice. Yes. The tenderness of the beef.
Get a little dip in here. I’m going to dip that. Ooh, I lost my beef. Lost your beef. So, it looks like we’ve got some green
onion and stuff in here. Mmm hmm. Okay. That sauce is amazing. Don’t forget your beef. Mmm. Just like a nước chấm. Like the, kind of savoury tangy
sauce made with fish sauce. But, it’s actually quite sweet. That green onion flavour is just popping in that sauce, actually. It’s really good. Kind of gingery too, actually. Next up,
I want to try the squid and the clam. Oh, yeah. Those look really good. We also have a little basket of… It looks like some green papaya
or green mango. Some sort of fruit. Mmm, yeah. Smells like a fruit. So… let’s put a little bit on each one there. There we are. That looks really good. Look at that fruit on top there. Let’s get a little dip. Oh, man.
I don’t know what fruit that is, actually. Mmm. Mmm. I think that’s green mango. Yeah, maybe.
It’s actually quite a tough to say. It doesn’t have an overpoweringly sweet… Or like, a guava? Or any taste… Or maybe a papaya. It adds a nice sweetness to the Bánh Căn though. A bit of crunchiness,
like a bit of that, sort of like fruit, veggie fresh flavour. But I have to say, that sauce… Is really nice, because on their own,
other than the smoky flavour, they’re actually a little bit plain,
I would say. So, I feel like this is a dish where… You need the sauce, for sure. Yeah, where it’s all about the sauce. Yeah, because they’re not salty, sweet,
or anything on their own. Yeah. That sauce is the winner though. Oh, my squid too, was pretty good. What about your clams? Pretty nice. Here, have a bite. Mmm. Mmm. Basket clams… Pop in your mouth. Mmm hmm. I have to say,
this is a pretty nice little snack, and I feel like the best part about
it is the really traditional way that they cook them with the
terracotta moulds. And actually, because they’re fairly
plain, I’d say in flavour, a lot of the flavour comes from the moulds
and from the charcoal. So, I feel like
without that, it would be lacking a lot. Yeah. So… And that sauce again, is the best. Ooh, the sauce… They’re actually really eggy tasting. Without any other flavour,
because she does pour that egg onto them. So, last one. Last dip. These went by really fast. One of us has a plain one. One of us has a quail egg. So… All right, these are the guys, have been a nice little snack. Mmm mmm.
Mmm hmm, mmm hmm. Love that sauce, yeah.
Mmm hmm. This green mango… Really adds something to it. This is a great snack.
I like this, mmm hmm. Last stop of the day. We are going for a Vietnamese…. Pizza! Hello. Hello. Thank you! Ooh! Oh, man. That is so hot. Oh, my gosh.
All right. Let’s take a seat and try it out. Here we have our Bánh Tráng Nướng,
which is nicknamed the Vietnamese Pizza. As you can see,
it looks nothing like a pizza. Nothing like a pizza at all. It’s a grilled rice paper
that we got “Thập Cẩm”. So mixed,
full of everything that she’s got back there. So many ingredients. Minced pork. We’ve got dried scallions,
dried shrimp, little shrimp. Butter, cow cheese! Creamy cow cheese on that. And two quail eggs that she cracked on too. Yeah, yeah. The ingredients are just right there. So you can see, it’s pretty big. Decent, really sizeable. Wow, it looks very delicate. I was going to say, it’s super delicate. You can see it’s like,
coming apart here in my hands. Oh, my gosh. All right. Let’s just stuff it back in there
a little bit. And… Get a bite, get a bite. So first bite is going to be,
I feel like, a lot of rice paper. But, here we go. Ooh! Mmm! Oh, wow. All right. First bite, definitely just grilled rice paper. Mmm. It’s got a smoky flavour though. I was going to say, the charcoal that she grills it on actually gives it
a really nice smoky flavour. And it’s crazy that it starts
so translucent and clear, and it turns into like, this grilled, such a different colour
and texture, and everything. Okay. Go for a big bite. Ooh! Mmm. Oh, that’s creamy! Oh wow. Mmm. Mmm. There’s mayo on
there as well, as well as like a, like a spicy, almost like, ketchupy sauce. Like a chili sauce or something like that, mmm. But that cow cheese,
makes that ultra creamy. Yeah. That is really good. The quail eggs too. It’s kind of like a flavour explosion. Yeah. But it’s like you said, kind of like mayoey and
salty, and savoury, and a bit of everything. And yeah, because of the dried shrimp…. Has a bit of a fishy taste to it as well. It’s just like, literally…
Yeah, like a flavour bomb. Yeah.
Just so many different flavours, but. This is super affordable. Cheap. Yeah. Quick. It just works, too. Easy snack, yeah. Mmm. The epitome of street food in Vietnam. Mmm hmm. And here in Ho Chi Minh City, yeah. Right on the street here. Yeah. Just grilling it up. And this is very popular here in the South,
as well as Dalat, they have it a lot. And Ho Chi Minh.
And just the south of the country. Very popular
southern Vietnamese dish here. And you know what? Every bite actually is
a little bit different because there’s just so much stuffed with it. Mmm. Ooh. I like it, I like it. It’s a crispy, crispy delight. Mmm. Delicious. Delicious. Ooh, and this is packed. Look at that! Wow. That’s good stuff. I think… Mmm hmm. This… Is the perfect way to end our street
food tour today. Mmm hmm. It’s been a nice day… of eating a whole ton of food. Mmm hmm. Some delicious southern style food. Yeah I feel like this would be good with a beer…
So we might have to get one. I agree. Yeah. Maybe on the way home, who knows? Perfect late night snack. Great way to end the day. Delicious. Yeah, give me another crispy bite. Mmm. So good. Mmm hmm. 1. Wow! That Bo Ne at the beginning looked so good, I was already drooling. The amount of pate was crazy haha. The fresh spring rolls looked nice too, I've had those before at Vietnamese restaurants, but I bet yours were even better. Great video guys, I really enjoyed it, learned a lot. Thanks! Looking forward to next week already 🥳

  2. That's some nice looking steak and eggs. Definitely looks a whole lot better than the ones I've tried in America before. That fire was insane! Think I'm going to cook my breakfast like that from now on 😂
Nice video as usual, such interesting and delicious looking food in the south of Vietnam. Looking forward to next week 👍
