up our dry ingredients in my medium Bowl we’re going to add in one package of red velvet cake mix and then two hour cake mix we’re going to add in one cup each of white sugar and all-purpose flour two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder I’m using the dark or you can use the original and a half a teaspoon each of baking soda and salt go on the Whisk the dry ingredients together until they’re well combined alrighty now we’re going to set the dry ingredients aside while we work on the wet ingredients in my large bowl we’re going to add in 3 4 of a cup of canola oil or you can use vegetable oil gonna make our cake super moist three eggs at room temperature I’m using extra large eggs three quarters of a cup of sour cream at room temperature one cup of buttermilk at room temperature a must-have and red velvet cake one teaspoon of distilled white vinegar also a must-have one teaspoon of pure vanilla extract a half a cup of hot coffee I’m using decaf or you can use the original and of course this isn’t red velvet cake without some red food coloring gonna add in one bottle and we’re going to mix all these ingredients together until they’re well Blended I’m gonna start my mixer on low so that way it won’t splather all over the place and then I’ll Whip It Up to medium foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] all right that’s the flower continue mixing until everything’s well combined alrighty my friends our cake batter is complete isn’t that gorgeous beautiful red mmm because smell the vanilla extract and the cocoa that looks great now we’re ready to pour them into our cake pans we’re going to pour them into two nine inch round cake pans and I sprayed them with bacon spray so using my one cup measurement just gonna scoop it into the cake pans and also this will give us even cake layer all right I’m gonna go ahead and finish with the rest of my cake batter and I’ll bring you back all right my friends I got all my Badger into my pans so now I’m gonna shake them and bang them to get the air bubbles out now we’re ready to put them in the oven ovens preheated to 335 degrees that’s right Sugar We’re Gonna Bake them in a 335 degree oven and we’re gonna let them bake for about 30 minutes all right I’ll bring you back foreign and smells heavenly love the smell of red velvet so now I’m gonna let them cool in the pan for about 10 minutes and then I’m going to remove it from the pan and let them cool completely on the wild rack and while they’re cooling let’s go ahead and get started on the Luscious cream cheese frosting in my stand mixer we’re going to add in a half a cup which is one stick of unsalted butter and one eight ounce package of cream cheese and they’re both at room temperature and we’re going to cream these on medium speed until they fluffy [Music] [Applause] all right my friends two hour cream cheese and butter we’re going to add in one teaspoon of pure vanilla extract that’s a cow full and blend that in [Music] alrighty over here in my bowl I have a 1 16 ounce box which is a pound of powdered sugar that I sifted or you can whisk it gonna add that in gonna add a little bit and mixes it until it’s well Incorporated [Music] all right last for the powdered sugar and mix until well combined all right my friends and just that quickly our cream cheese frosting is complete and our cake is nice and cool we’re ready to give it some sugar I placed one of my cake list onto my cake stand and I lined it with wax paper for easy cleanup so we’re gonna take a dollop of the frosting I’m gonna put it right on top I’m just going to spread it evenly like so alrighty now we’re going to take our second layer place that on top and again we’re going to dollop some frosting spread it evenly all over and the secret to a great red velvet cake there’ll be no crumbs in the frosting and we also going to frost the side all right I’m gonna go ahead and finish icing my cake and I’ll bring you back already my friends I’m through icing my cake in that gorgeous so now there’s one more thing we’re going to add to it I have some leftover cake crumb gonna put on top if you want you can add on some pecans or shredded coconut alrighty perfect so now we’re gonna gently slit our wax paper off just like that and there you have it my friends Southern red velvet cake doesn’t that look good so now I’m about to fix me up a plate and I’ll give the taste alrighty my friends I have fixed me up a great big Southern slide now it’s time for the best part the tasting here we go beautiful texture look at that Chrome Hello and Happy Juneteenth my Friends, welcome to my Southern Kitchen!
Today I am making a classic Southern Cake and it is one of my favorites and a staple red dessert of Juneteenth, Red Velvet Cake!
This recipe is incredibly moist it just melts in your mouth, chocolaty, and the best part, it is a Semi-Homemade version using a box Red Velvet Cake Mix but we going to doctored it up and it will taste like you made it from scratch and it is frost with the classic Cream Cheese Frosting! Everyone will love and enjoy this cake, also perfect for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or anytime of the year!
1 (18.25 ounce) box red velvet cake mix, Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker
1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned in and leveled
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, light or dark
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup full fat sour cream, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
1/2 cup hot coffee, decaf or original
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
3 extra-large eggs, room temperature
1 (fluid ounce) bottle liquid red food coloring
Cake crumbs, for garnish (optional)
Chopped pecans, for garnish (optional)
Sweetened shredded coconut, for garnish (optional)
Preheat Oven to 335 Degrees.
Grease 2 (9-inch) round cake pans with baking spray (Baker’s Joy or PAM Baking) and set aside.
In a medium bowl, add the cake mix, sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; whisk or sift together until well incorporated and set aside.
In a large bowl using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer using a paddle attachment, add in the sour cream, vanilla extract, eggs, oil, buttermilk, coffee, vinegar, and red food coloring; mix together on low until well combined. Then slowly add and mix in the cake mix mixture and continue mixing until well blended (scrape the bowl occasionally). Pour the cake batter even layers into the prepared cake pans, shake and bang the pans to get the air bubbles out. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick in the center comes out clean. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes then remove from the pan and let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack. Once the cakes are cooled, add one layer onto a cake stand and frost the top with cream cheese frosting. Then add the second cake layer, frost the top then frost the sides. Sprinkle the top with cake crumbs, chopped pecans, or shredded coconut (if desired). Cut them into slices, serve and enjoy!

You know, there’s this pink/red chocolate I’ve heard about, I think it would work well as a decoration or ingredient in this cake, what do you think?
