【消滅危機】30年後に消えてしまう可能性が高い韓国第2の都市『釜山』の本当の真実。

Punggye, South Korea’s second largest city, has a population of approximately 3.3 million. Famous as an important port city supporting South Korea’s economic logistics, the city also attracts many Japanese tourists for its natural beauty and gourmet cuisine . However, in recent years, Punggye has been facing a serious demographic crisis due to a declining birthrate and aging population. In 2012 , the proportion of the population aged 65 or older in Punggye City reached 23%, making Punggye the first metropolitan city in South Korea to enter the “at risk of extinction” stage. Four new areas have also been classified as “at risk of extinction.” Due to a combination of youth population outflow, a centralized society centered on Seoul, and a serious aging problem, the population has declined by approximately 600,000 over the past 30 years. The aging rate is expected to exceed 50% by 2050. In this article, we visited Punggye, a city classified by the South Korean government as at risk of extinction , and explored the hidden reality of Punggye that Japanese people are unaware of. Please stay tuned. I’m currently at Punggye Culture Village in District 4 of Punggye, South Korea. As I explained in the opening narration, there’s been a lot of news coverage recently about Busa in South Korea, and the South Korean government has officially stated that the population is expected to decline rapidly , and that the local economy , which is currently concentrated in Seoul, may soon disappear due to the heavy population . Actually, I often come to Busa for tourism, at least once a year, but I think that when you only make videos of people going to tourist spots, it’s easy to overlook the real local situation, so I thought I’d dig a little deeper into that this time . As I mentioned, we’re in place 4, which is on a hilltop with lots of cafes and trendy shops. It’s surprisingly popular, but if you search online, it’ll probably come up. It’s a slum town, so it’s split into two sections. It’s a tourist destination with cafes and is popular with young people, but the population is declining, and the town is becoming increasingly rundown and slum-like. So, first, I’m going to check out some of the various Pusan locations . So, you can see this orange, or cream-colored, apartment building. This is an abandoned apartment building, and it looks like it’s about to collapse. It’s been featured quite a bit, and there are quite a few vacant buildings around here, too . This one is like this one, and this one too, and the light blue one too. So, I’d like to take a look at the current situation in the area. Apparently, some areas are still occupied, but it seems like the area is already in a pretty terrible state. Well, you can kind of tell from the way you look at it. When I looked into it, I found that, even though no one lives in those abandoned apartment buildings, there are people who are just entering and living there . I’d say they’re probably hall-less people. They’re entering even though they’re no longer allowed in. It seems like there are a few people like that. As of 2023, there are approximately 114,000 autumn houses in Pusan. This number is the highest compared to other metropolitan areas, including Seoul, and has reportedly increased by nearly 25% in the nine years since 2015. Unmaintained autumn houses are aging and are left abandoned in some residential areas of Pusan, creating scenes of rows of collapsed houses. Furthermore, as garden trees and weeds grow uncontrollably, the number of abandoned houses increases, increasing crime and disaster risks. Additionally, because huts are easy targets for criminals to break into, there have been reported cases of illegal immigrants and illegal immigrants taking up residence in huts in some areas. The number of huts is increasing in the area due to absent owners , and a combination of factors, including unauthorized housing, difficulties in rebuilding dilapidated buildings, inheritance issues, and redevelopment issues, has led to widespread abandonment, raising concerns that the situation will become even more serious in the future . To address this issue, the city has launched a comprehensive hut maintenance program starting in 2023 , and is fully committed to identifying and utilizing abandoned huts. This is insane. It’s amazing. The grass is already growing out of control . It’s even more amazing than I thought. Yes, it’s dilapidated. It’s amazing. The window is open. You’d think someone would be there, but it ‘s just cracked open. This area doesn’t feel inhabited . It’s quite large, so there may still be people living there overall, but since it’s now closed off, it may no longer be inhabited. It’s amazing. The ocean is right in front of it, so the view is amazing , but it’s a little scary. It feels like no one’s been there at all. The grass is still growing, so I’m too scared to come here at night. I’m so scared I can’t go in. It looks like it’s about to collapse. It’s completely blocked off. It’s like a barricade . I’m sure there are people who just wander in. I won’t be doing that this time, just looking from the outside. Well, Pu is Korea’s second-largest city, so this sort of thing is pretty serious. Young people are increasingly flocking to Seoul for work , and prices and rents are rising. Apparently, it ‘s the fourth-highest in the world. I read an article that said it has the fourth-highest rate of land and rent increases in the world . Economically, it’s weaker than Seoul, so I guess there aren’t many well-paying jobs. Isn’t the difference huge? This is an island connected by a bridge across the ocean, but on the other side is a big city. Even though it’s a big city, it must be pretty tough. That’s not to say there’s a lot of people living there , but since it’s the second largest city in Korea, I think it’s still hanging on just fine. Apparently, in a few decades, more than half of the population will be elderly, and the government has even declared it a more marginal city, even more at risk of disappearing than Japan. This really changes my image of Poo. This is bad. It’s been left abandoned like this. Normally, the government would have demolished it. For example, when I went to Baeksamar, they said it was no good. The government took care of the trees and other structures, and demolition had already begun, but this place is still untouched. The view is amazing, though. I’ll go a little further . This road, down the hill , on the ocean side, has a bunch of stylish cafes. It looked a little empty , so I’d like to take a look around. I wonder if Japan will end up like this too. Wow, right from the get-go, it made quite an impact. It’s amazing. There’s an abandoned apartment building at the entrance, but I think there are still a lot of people living here . It’s not broken at all, although it does feel a little old. And at the back , there’s an elementary school. There’s a school. Well, this area is pretty normal. But these slopes are really steep, so when you get older, it’s hard to go shopping downstairs or upstairs. In Korea, building locations are often decided based on feng shui, so things like wealth and flat areas are often put on the back burner. It feels a little lonely, but there’s a decent shopping street and lots of people strolling around. Go down a little toward the sea and try some cafes . It’s really complicated. There’s a place called Kamcheon, and if you write it in kanji it’s something like Tenkawado Cultural Village, but it’s different from the place that’s called Pusan’s Machu Picchu, I’ve been there a few times, but it ‘s the 4th one , which is amazing. Well, this place has also become a tourist spot, and there’s a cafe in a place like this . It’s amazing. I don’t know if it’s a house or a cafe, but there are quite a few steep stairs. Ah, I can see the sea in front of me. Oh, it’s really beautiful. There are a lot of Japanese people walking around here too. It’s like a cafe. The ocean is so beautiful. This area is completely different from the slum apartments further back. It’s right in front of me, and everyone is a normal tourist, along with locals. I think this proximity is amazing. Oh, I want some ice cream. They’re not open yet. Small, hilly roads and stairs look great, don’t they? It looks stylish. Surprisingly, even in a place like this, there was a Japanese store. I think it’s run by a Korean, but this main street, called Maho-ya, is pretty rough . This Mou Akiya and that blue place are Mou Akiya, too. There seem to be a few cafes open here and there, and this one is also an Akiya. I’d like a cold coffee or something. This place was probably a stylish cafe in the past, but it’s gone . It’s all over the place now, with no shops or anything. Same here. I’m taking this photo pretty early, like 8:46. The cafe isn’t open yet . I’ve been drinking since about 10 o’clock, so I think I could use a quick coffee. There are a lot of these 24-hour, vending machine-like cafes in Korea, aren’t there? This one is open. Oh, the air conditioning is on and it’s cool. Hey, I want a cold one, so maybe I’ll buy one. It’s so stylish. [Music] What a shame. You can only buy it with that QR code , so I couldn’t buy it with a credit card or cash. I guess I’ll give up. Maybe I should go somewhere else . I think I can do it here. Oh, you can buy coffee here? Yes. I can take a card. Let’s try buying some. They even wrote out the instructions in Japanese. Okay , I’ll just buy something casual. I think I’ll get this one. I found option 2 , and it accepts cards. [Music] So this is my first time in Korea, and I’m trying this self-service vending machine cafe and drinking coffee. I wonder if it’s too much? Maybe there aren’t even any people working there. Maybe that’s why this kind of automation is so popular. I thought they might put in too much ice, but it was just the right amount. [Music] Oh, it’s delicious. It’s sweet. It wasn’t black. Oh, it was just delicious. It was cool. It’s really hot outside. Seriously. I feel like I’m going to get a stroke. Anyway, it was 4°C, so right off the bat, I saw these abandoned apartment buildings and this slightly run-down town, and this was my first time here. Yeah. I’m glad to know why it’s like this and what the current situation is . Next, I think I’ll drop by Hekun after this . It’s the complete opposite of here. It’s a place where young people and tourists flock , and as I’ve said many times, I’ll take a quick look at Hekun, and then there’s this town that’s still in a bit of a bad state , so I’ll take a look around there too. Let’s take a quick detour. There was also an instant coffee section in the back . You often see them, right? The kind you make your own at convenience stores. It looked like this. It’s nice in a way. I’d like some in my town too. Well, let’s go for a bit. So, [Music] I’ll head directly to Heiun from UB. [Music] So, I arrived at Heiun, but before I take a look around the town, I’ll probably be addicted to the casino. I just can’t rest until I’ve tried it at least once, so, um, I’m off. Well, I’ll play a little bit, hoping to make enough for lunch. You’ll have to judge the results by my face after this. So, I went to the casino. Okay, here I am. I’ve been coming to casinos lately. Oh, I ‘ll have lunch. Well, I made a profit. Well, I made money, or rather, I made money. Let’s take a look at Heiun and then have lunch. Around here, there are a lot of tourists, both Westerners and Japanese. However, even though it may look glamorous at first glance , there are some things that are a bit off the mark once you get inside the area. I think a lot of people come for the club luck when they’re sightseeing or on a mountain trip . There are hotels like the Orient and the Marriott around here, so I think it’s a fairly familiar place for Japanese people. It seems like a pretty high-end area, but I’m currently at this Paradise, er, City Casino Phu. Oh, there’s one in the chairman’s office, and I think there’s one in Seoul too. Yes. So, I was playing a little game. So, let’s take a look at the ocean. Well, I don’t think this area is particularly deserted or slum-like, even within Phu, but let’s take a look around the town anyway . It seems pretty dodgy. There might be some Akihabara or something. But, all that gloom is blown away by this beautiful Heun Beach. After all, you’re already in Japan. It’s been about a year since my last visit . As expected. It feels really nice. There are quite a few people here. Well, I ‘m one of those guys who doesn’t suit the ocean at beach resorts, so I’m more comfortable just hanging out at the casino, but it’s nice to see the ocean. The beach is, of course, populated, but it’s beautiful, hot, and there are a lot of people in the sea. Well, I don’t think this place is in danger of disappearing . It’s still as beautiful as ever. I like the skyscrapers, or rather apartment buildings, that are all around here. The night view is also amazing. There seem to be a lot of Lexus cars around here. You don’t see many Japanese cars in Korea, though . Just a little further back from the Paradise Hotel, from the moment you turn in past the beach, it’s already there. It’s Akiya. It’s pretty impressive. There are several Akiya stores in a row here. Yeah, even in such a nice, dirt-based place , it’s tough. It’s Akiya, or something like that. I’ve forgotten how to read the name. Yes, this character. I remember. If you see these two characters, it means it’s on sale, or something like Akite. This one too. Right around the middle of town, it’s here too. Is this all there? Oh, but this one is open. This one is. Oh, this one too. Oh, it’s all there. Everything except this GS25 . From here to here. Yeah, seriously. This one is that one, right? I think it was some kind of crappy rental. Hmm. I just remembered, or I looked it up. I thought this GS25 was open, but it ‘s closed too. The convenience store’s closed, too. Seriously? This whole building is ruined except for the one upstairs where this guy lives. Is it because it’s expensive? Maybe that’s partly because of the rent. I read something like that online. That’s amazing. It’s like this. I’m a little shocked. It’s the most populous and top tourist destination in Pusan City, with a vast sandy beach, skyscrapers, military hotels, and a glamorous area where international events are held. It’s positioned as Korea’s top tourist destination, overflowing with charm . Meanwhile, behind the tourist attractions, the local residents’ livelihoods are rapidly aging and outflowing. Although Heun is the most populous area in Busan City, its population is on the decline, with the aging rate reaching 22%, and the area entering a super-aging society. The growing number of young people has led to serious problems of sparse population and aging, making it particularly difficult for the elderly to find employment opportunities and income, with some areas suffering from the decline of businesses and the decline of communities due to population decline. In response to this rapid aging and population outflow, Heun is focusing on creating a town that people want to live in as a countermeasure against the outflow of young people , and is actively developing tourism infrastructure and hosting events. Every time I come to Heun, I eat samgyetang, but I’ve been going to the same restaurant for years, and the specialty of Busan is actually the sausage and daegi soup. Well, of course I’ve eaten it, but I don’t know what it is. I just want to eat samgyetang. That’s right. I bought it at the casino, so I could have something more luxurious, but at times like this, that staff member isn’t there. So, it’s something you can eat by yourself. The place in front that looked like a restaurant has closed down, too. This is also a tenant building. Looking at this, I can see that the misunderstanding is already empty. There are some shops downstairs. The samgetak restaurant I often go to is still open. It’s here, and although it’s a little early, they open from 10:30, so let’s eat. So I went in. It’s still early, so there aren’t any customers, but anyway, I ‘d have the cheapest regular getak for 17,000 yen, but today I’ll splurge a little and go for this one with abalone for 22,000 yen. It’s a luxury. I’m here right away. It brings back memories. I think I haven’t eaten it in about a year. And this is that carrot drink. They give it to you for free. And this cabbage kimchi salad that I love. It’s just there, not pickled yet. Before it becomes pickled. Well, and then there’s this gizzard. Wow, it’s amazing. It brings back memories. Let’s eat. I’ll have a little. Oh, it ‘s amazing. But it looks like it’ll give me energy. Ah , it might be good for someone who isn’t feeling well. It’s mostly just a hunch, but this one was bottled. Silson Cider. Good. [Music] Good morning. Thank you for your hard work. This is so good. It looks really good. That thing on top is abalone. The lady just cut it for me. She cut it for me. It looks so good. Like this. It’s got a lot of abalone in it, like silver naan and then ninja san. Let’s have some. I’ll have it without any seasonings first. Ah, it’s delicious. Good. Yeah. Oh, that’s later. Yes. Y- [Music] It’s so delicious. The chicken is also tender and delicious. It’s so good after eating it for the first time in a while. I’m so satisfied. Shall we take a walk around Hira a little further? What’s it like? Oh, here we go again. There ‘s Akiya here too. All I can see are Akiyas. But it’s true. As I walk, there are so many signs, you know. Well, this area is a typical tourist spot, with a jumble of shops , but I guess it’s pretty much in a prime location. It’s pretty normal. I’ve walked through this shopping street many times , and it doesn’t seem like much has changed. I wonder if a densely packed shopping street like this is actually pretty normal. It’s closed here, but maybe it’s just closed. There are a lot of people walking around, and there are a lot of Japanese people. There are also quite a few Chinese people, and it seems like there are a lot of Japanese people in the shops that cater to Chinese people, or that cater to Chinese people. On Choi Island, it was full of Chinese people, though. The other day, I went there, and there were a lot of shops that looked like they were recommended by YouTubers, and they were all decorated. I don’t know what that Korean guy was, though. This shopping street doesn’t seem deserted. It’s normal. As expected, the main street is packed with people. There don’t seem to be many rental or vacant properties. However, I feel like I might find something there once I get on the road. There’s nothing main here. It’s crowded. For now, I’ll leave it at that for Heun. From here , there’s a place called Gwan-ri, about 4.4km or 5km away, which is a beach tourist spot. I’m sure the locals of Pusan also come to Heun, but I’ve heard that a lot of them go there. There are a lot of foreign tourists around here , but I’d like to check out Gwan-ri, a lively local spot . I think I’ve been there before, but I don’t remember . I’d like to go again for the first time. I’m not sure what the area is like in tourist spots, since I’m not sure if they’re well-known . Let’s take a look around the town. Before going to Gwan-ri, I’m just walking around, and there are some. Even this street right in front of Heiun Beach, which is probably the most expensive in terms of land, is closed. Surprisingly, I’m sure there are even more if you go further in. So, I decided to take the subway and arrived at Krispy Kreme Station. Wow. Why is this called SU? I had no idea. There’s a Krispy Kreme vending machine. Do they have these in Tokyo? Or maybe I’m just a country bumpkin who’s never seen one before? It was my first time seeing one. So, I took the subway to An Station, and now I’m outside. I heard this area isn’t very touristy, and it’s a place frequented by locals, but it’s just a regular town. Kuari Beach is about a 10-minute walk from here, so I decided to take a look at what the road leading to the beach is like. There are a fair number of people walking around. It seems fine. Oh, I want to eat some bingsu . I want to eat injeolmi solbi. Just another two-minute walk from the subway station toward the beach, and I came across this vacant, rental-like establishment. There are a few here and there, so maybe the whole town is like that. Maybe it’s a very strict atmosphere. These are the hitsumab restaurants I’ve been seeing a lot lately in Korea. Koreans eat a lot of eel, so hitsumab might be a good match . It’s calmer and quieter than the Heun we were just walking through , and there are quite a few restaurants. Surprisingly, there’s only one other restaurant on this street that looked like it’s gone out of business . It’s pretty open. I’m not sure if it’s because there are more local Koreans here than in Heun, but there are a lot of Koreans here. There were a lot of tourists there just now , but there were a lot of Japanese people, too, but not many. I haven’t heard a single Japanese person yet. The beach is just ahead. Oh, I remember. I think I’ve seen that bridge from the beach before. This is the local beach. The atmosphere is nice. It’s not cluttered. Do you know this? You buy this coffee packet and pour it into the ice cubes yourself. I’ve been kind of into this lately. I think I’ll try some. It’s about 2000 yen, but I wonder how much the ice is. I think it’s about 500 yen with ice, and they also have juice. I buy it like this. It’s like this. Personally, I think the coffee here is better than the iced Americano that you get at Mega Coffee or Idea Coffee in America, where the iced Americano is really weak. But this is strong. It’s as strong as the one in Japan. Right. This pack of coffee is better. It’s good. By the way, I was just making up my mind. The ice cube stand was 50 yen earlier. Why? 500 yen, and the coffee, so together it’s 2000-600 yen. The coffee in this pack is really, really delicious. It’s strong, too. Good. Just right. I think it’s better than carrying it around. The view is great, though. [Music] The impressive buildings along this beach are just as impressive as they are here. Maybe this side is prettier. There’s a big bridge, and this side is also a city. [Music] There are quite a few beautiful women in swimsuits, like those Korean ones. It’s hot, and the sun is so strong, everyone’s wearing jackets. Well, it’s a treat for the eyes. I want to see how many shops there are along this beach and beyond . Even right in front of the beach , there are already some that have closed down. I haven’t seen them much in Seoul lately, but there’s this bagel shop. It looks delicious. I love bagels. Hey, shall I walk down the back alley now? There are certainly a lot of stylish shops. This one was probably a cafe, too. It’s closed, too. There aren’t many shops in back alleys. Maybe there are more shops concentrated along the beach. There are a lot of Korean people, after all. I like this place better. There aren’t any Westerners here at all. There aren’t many collapsed shops or anything like that. Bense felt more like that. There’s also some kind of festival going on right now. I wonder why there are so many people there. You know in Korea, you know these pillars that are used to stop vehicles from passing through ? So that they can stop cars from crashing into them. They ‘re kind of hollow. I think the ones in Japan and other countries are probably proper poles, but with those hollow, flat poles, if a car crashes into them, I can’t stop eating. It’s as expected. The Kuanli area is also full of Japanese-style shops. Yakitori places, for example. There’s also a family ramen and abura soba place in the Kuanli area . I’ve seen the Jiro style somewhere, but this is the first time I’ve seen family ramen. Well, the shaved ice is like this. It’s not particularly amazing or shabby or anything . It was reasonably lively and normal. It ‘s not exactly a shaved ice specialty shop, but it’s just a regular cafe curry, but I really wanted to eat it, so I’ll have it. Sorry. It’s so hot, I’m going to melt, so I’ll have it. It was surprisingly bland. But it looks delicious. I thought it would be more elaborate and filled with rice cakes, but hey, this is only about 1200 yen [laughs] . Let’s have it. Yeah. Delicious. It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve eaten bean paste. It’s just as hot and humid as Japan. I guess southern China, like Nanxiang, is much cooler. [Music] [Music] Anyway, I’ll eat this and take a short break, and then I’ll head over to a fairly nearby place, about 34 subway stops away, where there’s a student town packed with university students. It’s pretty much, well, it’s turning into a slum, and the shops are closing one after another and it’s apparently a mess. I thought I’d take a look around the area outside of the student area. [Music] [Music] So I moved on to my next spot, which is, well, Depkin, a student town, and this is my first time here. Well, I don’t really have any business here. There are two large universities in this area, and it ‘s a popular town with a lot of students. Right in front of me is the university station, the subway station. There are a lot of students in the area , and there are delicious, affordable restaurants. But, since young people are all heading to Seoul, this shopping district and this area are falling into disuse. That’s why the neighborhood is disappearing. I just had a quick look around the town , and there are a lot of young people. There are a lot of good-looking guys and girls. It really feels like it’s full of young people, but I think I’ll take a walk around a bit. I’ve never been here before. There are a fair number of people walking around. It’s a street, like Hakka Street. Well, there are a lot of chain stores in the area, and there are quite a few people around, so it’s nice, but there aren’t many people around. Well, it’s hot. Yes, I think it’s because it’s daytime, but I also think the university is on summer break. It looks like there are a lot of stylish shops and cafes, so it’s nice. There’s a pretty good shopping street. There are a lot of shops. It’s a town with a lot of students, so there are restaurants, fish and bukkake places, and bars and izakayas. I noticed after walking around a bit that there are a lot of liquor stores. I know there are a lot of Korean-Japanese izakayas and yakitori restaurants, but there are so many outside of the student area. This one is like that too. It says the sushi is delicious. I think this is an izakaya called Sekai. It says Japanese izakaya . A lot of young Koreans come here, don’t they? They travel to Japan. They really love it. Maybe it’s a trend. There are a lot of Japanese-style restaurants around here, too . But there are definitely more and more Akiya-style restaurants like this one. Going further in, there are a lot of tonkatsu restaurants. Oh, it’s the same in Seoul, and I’ve eaten at places like Pupyeong, but there are a lot of tonkatsu restaurants. As expected, this is Malatan’s restaurant, popular with young people . Up ahead is the university. Two universities are next to each other. It’s really full of students, and there are lots of cafes. It looks like a place that used to be a shop, but this is also an Akiya. Inside, it’s a shell. The izakaya here has gone out of business. Well, at first glance, it looks like it’s still open. It’s gone. The one next door is still open. Apparently, the number of students hasn’t decreased. That’s about it. Well, it’s less than before , but the rent seems to be really high, and, um, they offer cheap meals to non-students. I read an article that said that when this happens , many people quit and move out because rent is high and they can’t raise prices . This place used to be some kind of bistro, right? But it’s now an empty shell. Just going a little further in is scary. This whole area is empty. It’s pretty tough . It’s the same here. It’s the same here, isn’t it? This is Akiya, too. [Applause] Amazing. On the street opposite the main gate of Poki University, even during the day, there are still plenty of people, even with their shutters closed. There are even entire buildings for sale. It’s not uncommon for the parking lots of buildings that have been abandoned for several years to become practically dumping grounds . This decline in non-student restaurants has accelerated sharply since 2020. By 2023, 195 of the approximately 407 restaurants will be Akiya restaurants , reaching a rate of about 48%, or roughly half of all restaurants. While there are various factors behind this decline in non-student restaurants, the decline in the student population itself and changes in student consumption behavior are also key factors. In addition to the spread of online sites and delivery services, the prolonged remote learning during the Kona pandemic has changed students’ lifestyles. Opportunities to visit izakayas and restaurants have decreased, and rising prices and worsening economic conditions, which continue even after the pandemic has subsided, have further accelerated young people’s eating out habits . High rents for real estate tenants are also a major issue. Once known as one of the busiest areas in Fukuoka and always bustling with students and young people , Akiya stores with signs like this one are now everywhere: “I” (meaning “for rent” in Japanese) are particularly noticeable. Average rents in the area have remained high since the area’s former Hakagai district, making it difficult for new exhibitors to find new homes. As a result, vacant stores are not being created , leading to a vicious cycle of self-proliferation and hollowing out. While it was once said that working outside of university for four or five months would last about a year , it is now impossible to recoup the lost wages, and there are growing voices saying that some people are forced to continue paying rent even after closing . The number of self-defense contractors in 2024 decreased by approximately 40,000, and restaurants and shops are closing one after another, causing the once bustling shopping district to become a ghost town. I guess the entire building above was probably rented out. It’s completely empty now. The same goes for the one next door. This place is open. This is tough. This entire street is. Everything here, too. Yeah, oh, oh, this one too. Jeju Island was bad, too. Mr. Pu, these students are terrible. Well, it can’t be helped. I wonder if 80% or 60% of the population is concentrated in Seoul . Apparently, there aren’t many countries like this. There were quite a few shops open in the area that was full of Japanese influences when I first passed by , but if you go a little further away it’s deserted and there are only Akite shops and the building owners must be having a hard time. There’s a sign saying this place serves delicious ramen. I’m sure the places that used to have a Japanese influence are like this too. This one too. This one and this one too are no longer open to the public. The whole place is like this too. Same on the other side. I wonder what they’ll do about it. If it gets to this point the town will die. If you look closely at all the buildings up to the second floor, they’re deserted and have Akite shops . This one too. I was just mistaken earlier and this one is like this too, but maybe it’s just not going anywhere. At first glance it looked like it was still open. The Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen shop here has also gone out of business. There was that article in the media about how ramen will disappear in 30 years, and the South Korean government has officially… They’ve made that announcement, but I wonder if it will last 30 years . Seriously, once Michiko is in, it’s all gone. But this place, too. And this place, too. The shops in the back are amazing. Some stores are open as usual, like this one , and the second floor has ads saying everything’s open. It’s a pretty shocking reality to see. I don’t think Japan has caught up yet, but in Korea , salaries are higher than in Japan, and they’ve done a better job recovering their economy since the coronavirus hit, and I think they were like, “Yay!”, but it’s actually pretty serious . Yeah. Well, to begin with, the social infrastructure is completely different, and even things like pensions are completely different between Japan and Korea. I heard that it’s about half the size of Japan’s. Apparently, the pension system was established too late and people who missed it, and the elderly poverty rate is twice as high as in Japan. The population is one-third of Japan’s , but as Japanese people, we should really look at this reality and learn from it. There are people who make everything cheap , and they’re choking me, and they think cheap is everything . That’s one way of thinking. Jobs are disappearing, the area is dwindling, and the population is increasingly leaving the countryside. It’s like this: A lot of college students are living in the student towns. Well, I’ve just seen the current state of Pusa. I’d like to move on now. This area is pretty rundown. It feels like all the buildings are multi-tenant. [Music] [Music] So, I came to the South Sidewalk. I think most Japanese tourists come here at least once. Along the main street, like Beef Street, I wonder how it’s doing? There are certainly a lot of people around here, but there are a lot of tourists, so I’d like to see if Akiya and other places are being affected by the Maxo economy. Right in front of me, at the entrance, there ‘s a sign for Rental Akiya, and it looks scary. As expected, the shops on Main Street seem okay. There were a lot of people walking around, and this place was really packed with them. I wondered if it would be okay, but it’s crazy. This street is like this too. It ‘s like Akiya all over the area. It’s totally like that. It ‘s not just a small part of it, it’s like this all over the city, even in crowded places . The student-free area earlier was terrible, but even Nanpo Donburi is like this. This is crazy. I’ve got some Goncha soft serve ice cream that I’ve been eating. I’ll have a bite. Sorry. I wasn’t able to eat it last time in Seoul and was pretty disappointed, but I never thought I’d be able to eat it at Napo Donburi. The staff at my place, er, were pushing this with a cute touch. This Goncha milk tea soft serve ice cream with tapioca pearls. It’s good. I thought I’d never get to eat it again. Sorry. I just had bingsu, but I really wanted to try this. Yeah. It’s so delicious. Sorry. Anyway, I’ll walk around the city a bit more. [Music] It feels like there are about as many people here as you’d expect. Well, there are some Koreans, but they’re mostly foreigners. But there are quite a few. They might not be many, but some have closed down. They’re definitely offbeat brands. [Music] There are stores like Uchiki, Levi’s, Puma, Adidas, and Onitsuka Tiger, but I’m sure this used to be an apparel store too. I think this used to be North. Or maybe not? If I remember correctly, I think it was North. Or maybe not? It’s closed. Maybe not. The store next door has closed down , too. Yes. It’s closed down, too. It was a pretty good, central location, but the rent must have been too high, so it was probably out of the question. Same here. Hey, let’s keep walking and head towards the market . There’s a big building here that’s closed down, too. I wonder what it used to be. It was a pretty big building, but it’s closed. It might be surprisingly crowded. The entrance didn’t look out of place, but once inside, it was mostly Aki and Akite. We haven’t even gotten into the backstreets yet. This is on the main street. That was unexpected. [Music] Even with so many people around, even in a place that looks like it could be profitable, people got tired of these stores, and Minami-dori became just too crowded. This street of food stalls feels the same as it is now. It feels normal. There are a lot of people. [Music] But even with all this foot traffic, this place has closed down. I’m sure it used to be a hamburger place. This place too. There are a lot of back alleys. The closed place is this food stall from the main street, and at the back, where the market is. Even in a place that really gets a lot of people, this building has closed down. Since we’ve come all the way to Minami-dori, let ‘s walk over to the market and check it out. Daiso and other stores are pretty strong. Olive Young and Daiso are everywhere. I don’t think they’ve closed down. There are a lot of restaurants like this on the way to the market. This street is full of restaurants. It’s still daytime, so it doesn’t feel like any of the stores around here have closed down . I wonder if it’s been there for a while? I feel like there are more Chinese restaurants and Hinatabe around here now . I wonder if the number of older sister restaurants has decreased and more Chinese restaurants have been added? It brings back memories. This 1L coffee here. I remember drinking it a long time ago. I think it used to be around 2500 for 1L, but the price has definitely gone up now. Maybe around 3800. Oh, no. It hasn’t gone up. It ‘s 2000 for an iced coffee, and it’s 200 for the plastic. Oh, maybe it wasn’t 2500. But it’s cheap. 2000. 1L coffee. It hasn’t gone out of business yet. When I walk down this street, I feel like I’m in Korea. What do you think? Surprisingly, this area hasn’t changed much. I’m sure there’s a place called Yukke Yukke up ahead, a place I used to love and often talk about, selling Lebashi and Yukke. Oh, it’s still open. Yukke Yukke is closed for a bit now. It opens at 4pm, but it brings back memories. I’m not eating today , though. It’s still there. I’m glad they’re still open and doing their best. Up ahead is the market. I really like this view. There are a lot of these signs; they’ve been disappearing lately, but they’re still around because this area is old. There’s this karaoke place, a bar, and a bunch of liquor stores. Since I’m here, I’ll take a walk around the market. Not many shops around here have closed down. There’s a lot of food around here, and it’s fun to look around, but I ‘ve been here so many times. I think I’ve been here about 10 times. Well, I’ve been here so many times in previous videos, so I’ll just take a quick look. It’s pretty crowded. If you’re wondering whether it’s locals or tourists, there are a lot of tourists, but there are a lot of locals here. It’s not crowded, and it’s lively and lively. Let’s go to the next place. [Music] So, I came to Somion, known as the “fire town” of Pusan 1. It’s been a really long time since I last came here. They have everything. I think this place is completely unrelated to the dwindling popularity and disappearance , and I think it’s probably the most crowded place in Pusan. So, why did I come here? Because I wanted to eat those chemchips one last time before closing. They recently opened a Nakopuse restaurant in Osaka, and even just eating this , I thought it was a bit unorthodox. People talk about that chemchips a lot, right? Experts say they don’t eat that many, like only tourists . I think that’s probably how it is, but I want to go, so I’ll eat one last time before closing this chemchips restaurant. I think I’ve made a video about this before, but chemchips generally don’t let you in alone. You have to go in with two or three people and order enough for that number, but the Somyo branch is the only one where you can eat alone. And it’s open 24 hours. The staff have already left, so I’m the only one left, so I guess the only option for a lone traveler is to go to the Shimimin branch. Well, if you pay for two people , there are other places you can eat at, but it didn’t work out before. I said I’d pay for two people, but they wouldn’t let me in. As expected of a university street, it was deserted with college students, but, um, I got bored and did something. Oh , there are some. Yes, there are. There are quite a few in Seomyeon too. Yeah, it’s tough. It’s on the street where Pusan Gaemjip is, but this place is pretty empty too. This one is too. It’s not much different. It’s a pretty main area in the student district though. This one is Gaemjip. So I went in, but all the customers in front, behind, and on both sides were Japanese, so I was too embarrassed to take a bite . So I ordered Nakgopse and, from the start, extra hormone, this or hormone. There are no more toppings. Well, I’ll stick to hormone, Sprite and rice . And then, depending on how it goes, I might order ramen. Here it is. Looks delicious. [Music] I’ll pour it over this rice and eat it. [Music] Looks so good. Let’s eat. [Music] The hormone, octopus, and shrimp are delicious with Korean seaweed. Mixed with rice, it’s amazing. Wow, it was so delicious after eating it for the first time in a while. I ate it at Tsubashi in Japan around April, and I thought, “No, this place is the best, the taste.” By the way, the customers were probably almost all of them. Maybe not even a single Korean. I think they were all Japanese. Oh, wow, it’s delicious. I was thinking of just eating my Gaemjip and calling it a day, but I heard that Somy is surprisingly crowded with people in the fall , so I thought I’d take a quick look around and see what’s going on. It’s amazing. Just one street down the street from Gaemjip is Akiya. It’s pretty much closed. Same here, too. Same here . Somyeong is like this. If you look closely, the whole area is like this. I just looked here, and I don’t think it was like this on the other side or the other side. We’re still on Gaemjip street, but the nicer side here is open. It’s closed. Same here. About 40% of the shops on this street where Gaemjip is located are closed. It’s actually vacant . I think it’s been quite a while. I guess the rent is just too high and it’s out of the question. I think this place used to be a bakery or something, but it’s gone under now. This is the Nishitetsu Solaria Hotel, but even a place like this, so prestigious, is no good . I thought it would be okay, but even the place that’s probably the most crowded is like this. I had no idea. I didn’t find out by researching, I only found out when I came here. This place is closed too. I think there was a lot of trash here too. It’s quite a bit. My image of it has changed. I’ve been here too and I’m amazed. Oh, on the other side, this whole big building is empty. This one and this one are both empty . The one next to that one is empty too. It’s next to the Solaria Hotel. Yeah, it’s kind of sad to tell you all this. It’s the same over there. Well, restaurants in Korea tend to turn over really quickly, sometimes within a month, so I guess it’s normal, but I ‘ve never really seen so many that have closed down and are empty. It’s like everything. Everything around here is gone. It’s the main area, with the bus stop over there . It certainly feels like there aren’t many people here, even though it’s Friday . I can’t believe it was always this dirty. It’s depressing, covered in trash , so I head back to the hotel. It’s lonely, seeing this main street entrance covered in trash. So that’s what I saw this time. It’s South Korea’s second largest city. Over the last 30 years , the population has dropped by 600,000, and most people have moved to Seoul. I’ve seen the city, and honestly, I thought there were more Akiya restaurants than I expected. I didn’t expect so many shops to have gone under, especially in the shopping districts and towns. When I looked into it beforehand, I saw that this area and this area were terrible, so I went to check them out. Even outside of the areas I was considering, like Somi and Haeundae, there were quite a few vacant lots . I was also surprised by the Nampo-do area. Young people tend to head to cities in search of work, as happens in every country, but Korea’s population is about 1/340 million of Japan’s. And the elderly population is also significant, expected to be more than half in the next few decades. I think the situation in a country like that is quite critical, and I thought Japan, too, was a bit of a shock. I’ve traveled to Korea quite often, and it ‘s been a long time since I’ve been to P. I haven’t really seen it from that perspective, but it was probably a year ago. It might be even worse than that . There were people around town, of course. I did n’t expect it to be that empty, that’s my impression this time. There are some parts that are a little lonely, but it’s a fun city to travel to, and I’ll probably come here many more times in the future, but I think it would be good if everyone knew that when you come to Pusan , there is a truth or reality to it . So, I’d like to end this video here. If you liked it, please leave your thoughts in the comments section, and please rate it and subscribe to the channel. Thank you for watching. [Music] [Music]

    12. Some of Busan's young population wants to move to the Seoul metropolitan area, and ironically, Busan is becoming a hot spot for unprecedented numbers of international tourists.

      https://youtu.be/z2hm44KuEAc?si=iaNodHpr8a1D1uJ7
