Chapter 9
A Day of Tilling – Planting Sweet Potatoes for the First Time Good morning.
Today, I’m going to plant sweet potato slips. This place used to have a greenhouse.
It’s been a long time since anything was grown here. To prepare the soil,
I start by digging up the weed-covered ground. I’ve heard that beans and sweet potatoes can grow even in poor soil. I wondered if I could really do it,
but this is my first time growing sweet potatoes. At first, pulling weeds was really hard for me. But once I realised that digging the soil a bit with a shovel first
makes the weeds come out more easily, it became much easier. This one… won’t budge! ^^; Next, it’s time to make the soil soft and fluffy. Using a farming tool with five prongs,
I loosen the soil and let air in. As the soil softens,
the field slowly begins to look like a real garden. Finally, I make the raised beds. With a tool that has a half-circle blade,
I gently gather the soil into shape. Once the beds are formed,
the garden looks much more defined. Finally, everything is ready for planting! Even though it’s such a small garden bed,
it took me two whole hours to build it. Exhausted, I take a short break. I’m sitting on this wooden box,
but I heard there’s a beehive inside—so I’m a little nervous. A sip of cold tea to refresh myself—
and back to work. I lay down newspaper on top of the garden bed. The newspaper helps prevent weeds and keeps the soil from drying out. After covering it with some soil and gently pressing it down, I place the leafy part of the sweet potato sprout on top of the newspaper. Then, starting just beside the edge of the newspaper, I dig a shallow trench. I lay the base of the sprout sideways into the trench. This method keeps the slips from being shaken by the wind. It also helps maintain just the right level of moisture in the soil. I use newspaper printed with black ink made from soybeans. Because colour ink may contain heavy metals or petroleum-based substances, they could affect the soil’s microbes and the crops themselves. To keep the newspaper from blowing away in the wind I cover the edges with soil to hold it down. To prevent the soil I added from being blown away I press it down with my foot to secure it. While working, I found a large piece of plastic buried in the soil. I heard the previous user had laid a weed barrier sheet to prevent weeds from growing. That was already 20 years ago. Plastic is difficult to decompose in the soil,
and polyethylene (PE) can last for over 100 years. Even polypropylene (PP), though it deteriorates in 10 to 30 years,
never fully decomposes. It’s difficult for microorganisms to break it down, As a result, it ends up becoming waste that stays in the soil forever. To remove it from the soil, I have no choice but to dig it up, separate it, and dispose of it. Recently, it seems that more biodegradable materials have become available. This is the plastic that was left in the soil. From now on, I hope to choose materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible. Thank you so much for watching to the end:)
I hope to see you again in the next video. Blessings from the mountains, with the scent of spices.
Next time, we’ll make wild bayberry craft cola.
