This is the “Streetscape of Sawara” in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. This town flourished as a merchant town during the Edo period. Boat traffic on the Ono River was thriving here, and there were many storehouse-style merchant houses built here. At the time, it was such an urban town that it was said to be “Edo-superior.” In 1996, Sawara was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and was recognized by the government for its high cultural value, and its streetscape is still protected today. It is also the place where Ino Tadataka, the famous maker of the map of Japan, lived when he was young, and there are tourist spots such as his former home and memorial hall. You can also experience the “Little Edo Sawara Boat Tour,” which takes you around the town on a boat as if you had traveled back in time to the Edo period. Since I’m here, I’d like to try the boat tour myself♪ Tickets can be purchased at “Sanoya,” located right next to Ino Tadataka’s former home. Adults: 1,300 yen It was 700 yen for elementary school students. The boat tour takes about 30 minutes and goes around the Ono River. In June, it operates between 10:00 and 16:30, but in seasons with short sunrises, it seems to finish earlier. While I was waiting for the boat tour, water started flowing from the bridge. In fact, the “Toyohashi” bridge over the Ono River is also known as the “Jajaja Bridge” because the water flows every 30 minutes. It is said to have been selected as one of the “100 Soundscapes of Japan to be Preserved”. Indeed, the sound of flowing water is soothing. I saw something nice while waiting for the boat tour. Now it’s time to depart! We turn around under the bridge and change direction! We’re off! The boatman will tell you about the history. They also sold stylish parfaits and shaved ice. In addition to Japanese-style sweets, There is also food that is full of modern feeling. This seems to be an area where food trucks gather. It’s good to eat while walking around. For adults, there are also things like this. Sawara has flat, wide roads that are easy to walk on, and no matter where you look, there are only beautiful views, which is soothing. I saw a shop that caught my eye, so I decided to go in. This is Seijo Shoyu-ten, which was founded in 1800 (Kansei 12), so it is a famous long-established shop that has been in business for 225 years. There were many kinds of soy sauce in the shop , from seafood soy sauce such as clams to my favorite garlic soy sauce. There is also a refrigerated section where they sell soy sauces that go well with alcohol. I’ve heard of edible chili oil, but I’m curious about “edible soy sauce”. They also sold this delicious-looking thing. A secret sauce… Juuriria. They also sold stylish original cooler bags, so you can take it home with peace of mind. In addition, old tools and ornaments that have a sense of history were on display in the store. Everyone, please stop by and look for your favorite products. You can also get the perfect ingredients for a meal in the car. I’m very satisfied with this , but I’ve been walking without having lunch so I’m starting to get hungry. I looked up a restaurant I want to go to in advance and I’m heading there. Actually, there are many restaurants lined up on roads that aren’t along the river, and I haven’t seen them all yet. I came to a restaurant called “Deborah’s French Toast” which is about a 3-minute walk from Chukei Bridge. When I saw this delicious-looking photo, Chiikona’s delicious food sensor went off. Now that I’m inside , I’ve heard a recommendation from the staff so I’m going to try that. It looks really delicious . Let’s eat. It was very hot today so I’m happy with the ice cream. It’s delicious – the soft toast soaked in mango sauce and egg is sweet, but the coconut ice cream is refreshing, so it’s just right. There are also lots of sliced ​​almonds on top which are delicious, and I didn’t know what the white sticks were at first but they were lime meringues with a crunchy texture and a refreshing taste. It’s my first time drinking Marco Polo, so I wonder what it’s like. Ah, it’s sweet! The aroma is really strong. The slight taste of honey is delicious. Today’s place to sleep in the car is about 7 minutes by car from the townscape of Sawara, which is very close. It’s great because you can play to your heart’s content without worrying about your stamina when you’re close to tourist spots. This place, which has an amazing location, is the roadside station Mizunosato Sawara. In fact, this place is a combination of a roadside station and a river station. It is a complex facility that has been transformed into a shopping center, and each has shops and restaurants that sell local specialties. There are two parking lots, both of which are large, and at this time of day, there are not many people using them, so it seems very easy to sleep in your car. This shop is located near the river station, but it is past business hours, so I will come back tomorrow. The reason this place is called Water Town is the river that spreads out in front of me. The Tone River has the largest drainage area in Japan and the second longest in Japan. I was able to see the sun setting just right. It feels like my soul is being cleansed. I returned to the car. I’m hungry, so it’s about time to eat in the car. Today I want to eat a lot of rice, so I want to make braised pork. Braised pork needs hot rice. I’m going to cook one cup of rice in my Yamazen mini rice cooker. I found some seasoned eggs at a soy sauce shop in Sawara . I bought them because I had the chance . One of the best parts of sleeping in my car is being able to cook and eat the things I buy on my trip. It’s a bright yellow color with nutrients that can only be obtained by cutting the boiled eggs. I’ll put them on my favorite plate. Anything looks delicious on this plate. It looks like it’s a mini vegetable. By the way, these mini vegetables have recently started to appear in stores, but farmers were against selling small vegetables at first because there was an old statistic that showed that larger vegetables sell better. 今回訪れたのは、水辺の町「佐原の町並み」。
静かな川沿いを舟でめぐり、
風にゆれる町並みをゆっくり歩く――
まるで時間がゆっくり流れているような、不思議な場所でした。

そして夜は、道の駅「水の郷さわら」へ。
車内で映画を観ながらのんびり過ごし、
昼間に見つけた佐原の名物を使って、美味しい車中飯も作りました。

忙しい毎日の中で、
ほんの少しでも「旅の空気」を感じていただけたら嬉しいです。
