Kotakiyama) You shouldn’t hang the mawashi to dry in direct sunlight. Kotakiyama) I’m teaching that to the manager over there. Staff) Does the color change if it’s exposed to the sun? Kotakiyama) It ends up like a sunburn. Kotakiyama) The color fades. Kotakiyama) So we try to hang it somewhere out of the sun. Staff) You were amazing today. Staff) You were really strong. Wakamiyabi) Yeah, today was good. Wakamiyabi) Like I said before, my condition tends to fluctuate. Staff) But still, you were incredible. Staff) Really good. Wakamiyabi) I was really good today—it even surprised me. Wakamiyabi) I was like, “Ah!” Staff) What are you making today? Kyoda) Today, Kyoda) Tamagoyaki, Kyoda) braised pork belly with daikon, Kyoda) and I’m thinking of grilling some beef tripe. Kyoda) For the featured dish, I’ll make yangnyeom chicken. Staff) What about the hot pot? Kyoda) Soy sauce-based hot pot. Keiga) The new chanko team. Staff) Hm? Keiga) The new cooking crew. Staff) Kyoda team. Keiga) The new team leader. Keiga) Kyoda-san, we’ll start over here too. Kyoda) First, cut the daikon. Kyoda) This one’s for the pork belly and daikon dish we’re making first. Keiga) Okay, then I’ll cut the daikon for the hot pot. Staff) Is the other person Umeyama? Kyoda) It’s supposed to be Koga, but he’s going out shopping today. Kyoda) So Umeyama will be filling in. Kyoda) We’ll have Umeyama join in. Staff) Do you feel lonely without Nobehara around? Kyoda) Yeah… Kyoda) Maybe a little? Staff) Not lonely? Kyoda) I wouldn’t really say I feel lonely. Kyoda) But I do think it’s impressive. Staff) Impressive? Kyoda) You have to rank within the top 15 of the Makushita division to be exempt from cooking duty, so I think that’s pretty amazing. Kyoda) I don’t need to cut the daikon too thick, right? It won’t cook through easily. Keiga) Like this? Kyoda) Thanks. Staff) That’s a lot. Kyoda) It’s three packs of meat. Sesame oil Kyoda) Soy sauce and… maybe mirin? Keiga) We don’t have mirin. Kyoda) Sake then? Keiga) We have sake. Kyoda) Add the seasonings, bring it to a boil, and once the liquid’s gone, it’s done. Keiga) I think it’s fine to leave a bit of liquid. Kyoda) Yeah. Staff) Umami seasoning. Kyoda) Umeyama, keep an eye on it. Umeyama) Got it. Sake Soy sauce Sugar Mentsuyu (noodle soup base) Kyoda) Looks pretty good. Kyoda) Yeah, it’s looking good. Staff) Finished! Keiga) I’m exhausted. Staff) Exhausted? Keiga) It’s rough. Keiga) I’ve been running out of stamina lately. Staff) Is it the collision training that’s wearing you out? Keiga) It’s rough. Keiga) Doing consecutive sumo bouts and then collision training really wipes me out. Staff) Are you crying? Keiga) My eyes hurt. Staff) You’re always crying when you’re cutting onions. Keiga) I’m seriously weak against onions. Keiga) Anything in the onion family makes my eyes hurt. Staff) Which one are you weaker against—onions or collision training? Keiga) I’m weak against both. Staff) You’ve really improved. Keiga) Gocchandesu. Keiga) I had no idea how to cut anything at first. Staff) Yeah, that’s true. Staff) Keiga, are you still keeping up with your weight training? Keiga) I am. Staff) Around noon? Or in the evening? Keiga) Around 3 p.m. Staff) At the training hall? Keiga) Yes. Keiga) But I can’t do it today. Staff) Why not? Keiga) I’m busy with the dishes, and we have a pep rally tonight, so prep for that starts early. Kuwae) Where are the mushrooms? Keiga) ♪Kinoko no konoko genki no ko Kuwae) Is it this one? Kuwae) Found it. It was here. Katsuobushi broth (Bonito stock) Soy sauce Mentsuyu (noodle soup base) Staff) Don’t your parents ever come to watch you? Keiga) What? Staff) Sumo. Keiga) They’ve been trying hard to get tickets through the lottery, Keiga) but it’s tough to win. Keiga) They do say they want to come. Keiga) But yeah, it’s hard to get lucky. Staff) Yeah, tickets are really hard to get right now. Keiga) I’m trying to get them myself too. Keiga) I want my mom, grandma, and dad to come watch. Keiga) I’ve been entering the ticket lottery too, Keiga) but it’s really hard to win. Staff) So you can make the call on your own now. Salt Keiga) I was made to do it all the time in Soga-san’s team. Umami seasoning Keiga) OK Staff) As expected. Staff) That’s wonderful. Kyoda) I really wanted Keiga on the team. Staff) You wanted him? Staff) As a team member? Kyoda) Yeah. Staff) Why did you want him? Kyoda) He’s really good at seasoning. Staff) He says you’re good at seasoning. Keiga) That makes me happy. Staff) Major growth! Staff) Do you ever go back home and cook? Keiga) The other day, I made karaage. Staff) You made karaage? Keiga) I’ve actually made it once here before. Keiga) They said it was delicious, so I tried making it at home too. Staff) Isn’t it different from Denuma’s seasoning? Keiga) Yes. Keiga) But it might be nearly the same. Staff) They tend to end up pretty similar anyway. Keiga) It’s done. taff) Keiga’s soy sauce flavor. Staff) Kuwae, are you helping too? Kuwae) I’m on cooking duty today. Staff) Kuwae, haven’t you gotten bigger? Kuwae) You think so? Staff) How much do you weigh now? Kuwae) Around 118 kilos or so. Kuwae) I’ve actually dropped a bit. Staff) Maybe it was just my imagination… Kuwae) No, I’ve definitely gotten bigger. Staff) You looked good in practice today. Kuwae) Yeah, I felt good today. uwae) This morning… Kuwae) I woke up early again today. Kuwae) And I felt good when I woke up. Kuwae) And I felt good when I woke up. Kuwae) Usually, I’m still sleepy. Kuwae) But today I felt refreshed. Staff) Did you go to bed early? uwae) No, same as usual. Kuwae) I’m adding the cabbage. Staff) Has anything changed since you started working with Mita-seki? Kuwae) During bouts, we grab the front part of the opponent, Kuwae) and he teaches me the detailed techniques for that. Kuwae) Of course, even when I was with Nabatame-seki, Kuwae) he also taught me a lot. Kuwae) Like how to grab the opponent while staying on the offensive. Staff) So is there something especially different about what you learn from Mita-seki? Kuwae) He teaches me how to respond when I can’t get a grip on my opponent, Kuwae) and he points out in detail the parts of my body I’m not using properly. Staff) He was giving you advice during practice again today, wasn’t he? Kuwae) Is it too hot? Umeyama) I’m fine. Staff) Are you sure it’s not too hot? Umeyama) No, I’m okay. Staff) You’re using a T-shirt, so… Kuwae) Umeyama, wear this. Staff) Umeyama, you seem like you enjoy cooking. Umeyama) Yeah, I do. Umeyama) I’ve got the urge to try making something based on my own ideas. Umeyama) I want to try cooking something soon. Kyoda) Umeyama, Kyoda) crack the eggs for the tamagoyaki into that big bowl. Umeyama) Got it. Keiga) How many? Twenty-five? Kyoda) Around twenty-five. Keiga) Is it dashimaki tamago? Keiga) Dashimaki tamago? Staff) How was practice today? Umeyama) Man… Umeyama) I’ve been doing terribly lately. Staff) Terribly? Staff) What do you mean? Umeyama) I can’t wrestle the way I usually do. Umeyama) My sumo just hasn’t been in good shape. Umeyama) It’s pathetic. Staff) Pathetic? Umeyama) Yeah, I think it’s pathetic. Mentsuyu (noodle soup base) Katsuobushi broth (bonito stock) Staff) Looks pretty good, doesn’t it? Kuwae) Yeah, looking good. Staff) Is this Mita-seki’s teaching too? Kuwae) No, no, not this one. Staff) Looks beautiful. Kuwae) Yay! Staff) Shakiin! Staff) Shakiin! Staff) Shakiin! Kuwae) Do you think Roga-seki will eat a whole one? Kyoda) Probably. Kyoda) I think he will. Staff) Roga-seki really likes eggs, huh? Kyoda) Yeah, he does. Kyoda) He eats a lot. Kuwae) Ume-chan. Umeyama) Yes? Kuwae) I want you to crack some eggs. Kyoda) Ume-chaaan. Umeyama) Yes? Kuwae) Say it cuter. Umeyama) Okaaay ♡ Kuwae) Perfect. Kyoda) Thanks. Kyoda) Kuwae. uwae) Okaaay ♡ Kyoda) No, no, no! Staff) Is there anything you’ve been into lately, Kuwae? Kuwae) Not really. Staff) Nothing, huh. Staff) What do you do on your days off? Kuwae) On my days off… Kuwae) I don’t really have any hobbies… Kyoda) Didn’t you go see a movie the other day? Kuwae) Oh right, I went to the movies. Kuwae) On my first day off, I went with Nobehara-san and Wakamiyabi-san—the three of us saw a movie. Kuwae) He’s really into movies. Staff) It was interesting Kuwae) So Kuwae) On my next day off, I was free and alone, so I went to see a movie. Kuwae) It was a film featuring Ōmori from Mrs. GREEN APPLE, who I really love. Staff) “#I Will Tell You the Truth”? Kuwae) Yeah, I went to see that. Staff) Was it good? Kuwae) Yeah, it was really good. Staff) Is it the kind of movie with a strong message? Kuwae) It’s intense. Kuwae) It really sends a message to the audience. Kuwae) I thought it might be more of a horror film, Kuwae) and it is a little scary, but it’s a movie that really feels like it’s speaking to people today. Staff) Did you really feel it? Kuwae) Yeah. Kyoda) I’m making yangnyeom chicken. Salt and pepper Staff) Doubanjiang (chili bean paste) Kyoda) Doubanjiang yoda) Ketchup Garlic Soy sauce Sugar Mentsuyu (noodle soup base) Potato starch (katakuriko) Staff) Yangnyeom sauce. Staff) It looks delicious. Staff) It’s nice and glossy. Kyoda) Looks delicious. Kyoda) It’s all glossy and shiny. Kuwae) Justin Radio~ Kuwae) Today’s special guest is… Kuwae) Sotaro Umeyama Umeyama) Thanks for having me. Kuwae) First of all, how has it been since you joined the stable? Umeyama) Now that full-scale sumo training has started, it’s tough, Umeyama) but I want to keep practicing in a way that helps me grow. Kuwae) It was the day before yesterday, I think? The new rankings were announced. Kuwae) Your name appeared on the banzuke for the first time—how did that feel? Umeyama) Just being on it makes me happy. Umeyama) I’m starting from Jonokuchi 15th rank, but I want to give it my all. Kuwae) What’s your goal for the next tournament? Umeyama) I want to get a winning record, of course. Kuwae) Yeah, getting a winning record comes first. Kuwae) How far up do you want to rise? Umeyama) Well, ideally… Kuwae) Or maybe your goal for this year? Umeyama) This year, I… Keiga) Is Justin Radio on now? Umeyama) For now, I want to develop my own style and get as many winning records as I can with it. Kuwae) What do you focus on during practice? Umeyama) Of course, I want to get stronger, Umeyama) but I think I can learn even more if I enjoy it, so I want to enjoy sumo as I train. Kuwae) So your goal for this year is… Kuwae) Sandanme? Umeyama) No. Kuwae) Makushita? Umeyama) No, somewhere in the middle of Jonidan. Kuwae) You can totally get there. Kuwae) You’ve got this. Kuwae) What’s the hardest part of sumo training school? Umeyama) Doing over 200 shiko (foot stomps). Kuwae) Shiko is the toughest part? Umeyama) Yeah, some days we have to do 250 or more. Kyoda) Kuwae, Kyoda) after you’re done with that, Kyoda) take the tray over. Kuwae) Alright, finally—any message for your fans? Umeyama) There are times when I fall short, Umeyama) but I’d be really happy if you could support me, even through that. Umeyama) Thank you for your support. Kuwae) Thank you! Kuwae) See you next time! Kuwae) Until our next guest— Kuwae) Bye-bye! Nobehara) Oh, Kyoda. Kyoda) Hm? Nobehara) What are you up to? Staff) His best friend! Staff) How was practice today? Nobehara) Nah… it wasn’t great. Staff) Not a good day? Nobehara) Yeah, not really. Staff) But lately you’ve been able to train with a lot of sekitori. Nobehara) It’s been fulfilling. Nobehara) It really has, but I’m still not doing well. Staff) What are you working on? Nobehara) I’m preparing the envelopes for Mita-seki’s promotion party. Nobehara) We’re sending them out to all the supporters’ association members. Staff) The party’s coming up soon, huh? Nobehara) Yeah, for Mita-seki. Staff) Like an invitation? Nobehara) More like a notice— Nobehara) asking if they’ll attend or not. Nobehara) We’re sending out those envelopes. Staff) So everyone’s working on it together? Nobehara) Lately, it’s been once a year. Staff) That’s true. Nobehara) We had Roga-zeki, Nobehara) then Nabatame-zeki, Nobehara) and now it’s Mita-zeki. Nobehara) I’d like to be the next one. Nobehara) We talked about that, didn’t we? Staff) Did we? Nobehara) At Nabatame-zeki’s party. Nobehara) You asked me how I felt about wanting to be next. Staff) You want to be the one getting the party thrown for you. Nobehara) Kyoda-san— Nobehara) You should be next too. Kyoda) I’ll do my best. Staff) There’s a lot to do, huh? Shunta) Yeah, there is. Nobehara) It’s kinda like arts and crafts class. Shunta) Totally feels like that. Staff) Is it fun? Shunta) Fu… Shunta) Well… Shunta) Yeah. Shunta) I guess so. Nobehara) If something’s tough, he starts whining. Shunta) No, no, no! Shunta) I’m not like that. Nobehara) He’s still a little kid. Shunta) I’m not, seriously! Nobehara) How old are you? Shunta) Fifteen. Nobehara) That’s wild. Staff) Fifteen. Staff) Yeah, he’s only fifteen. Nobehara) That’s right. Nobehara) When things get tough, of course you feel like complaining. Shunta) Nah… Nobehara) What year of Heisei were you born in? Shunta) Heisei… Shunta) I don’t know. Nobehara) Are you serious? Shunta) I know the year in the Western calendar though, like 2000-something. Staff) You don’t know what Heisei year you were born in? Nobehara) That’s kinda crazy. Shunta) Does everyone actually know that? Staff) Of course they do. Nobehara) Everyone knows! What about you, Kyoda? Kyoda) Heisei 15. Nobehara) Right. Soma? What year were you born? Soma) Heisei 16. Nobehara) And Keiga? Keiga) Heisei 19. Shunta) Then I must be 20… Nobehara) 20? Shunta) Heisei 20… Shunta) I was born in Heisei 20. Shunta) No, no, wait—21. Shunta) I’m two years younger than Keiga. Staff) So you didn’t actually know. Shunta) I know the Western year! Nobehara) You have to write it sometimes at the hospital—Heisei what year. Shunta) I probably struggled with it then too. Nobehara) When’s your birthday? February? Shunta) January. Nobehara) So you’re still 15? Shunta) Yeah, still 15. Staff) So young. Staff) Just 15. Shunta) Is that young? Nobehara) Sakagami-san, you had a time like that too, right? Staff) Everyone does, come on. Nobehara) What were you doing? Staff) At 15… Soma) Probably doing club activities. Shunta) Hobbies. Soma) At 15, he already had a camera. Nobehara) That’s not interesting at all. Staff) What’s your problem? Shunta) You’re totally making fun of me! Nobehara) Back in my first year of high school, the toughest time was the training camp during Golden Week. Staff) You were all in the sumo club, right? Nobehara) Yeah, that’s right. Nobehara) Pretty much everyone who went to high school was in the sumo club. Nobehara) I think we went to a training camp in Kumamoto when I was in my first year of high school. Shunta) Most people were in the sumo club. Nobehara) Everyone in high school was in the sumo club. Shunta) Everyone here right now was in the sumo club. Nobehara) Yeah, if they went to high school, they were all in the sumo club. Nobehara) Kyoda, were you in your high school’s sumo club too? Kyoda) Yeah. Nobehara) Gocchandesu All) Good aftrernoon, ma’am. All) Thanks for the meal. Okami) Isn’t it hot? Should I open a window? Wakamiyabi) Gocchandesu Oyakata) Denuma’s not here? Oyakata) Did he go? Okami) He has. Okami) Wakamiyabi’s early too, right? Okami) Around 1 p.m.? Wakamiyabi) I’ll be out by about 1:10 p.m. Okami) Mita, what happened to your foot? Mita) The skin cracked. Mita) So I’m putting on medicine and wrapping it with plastic wrap. Soga) Gocchandesu Nobehara) Go ahead and eat about half. Mita) When’s her birthday? Nobehara) Okami-san? It’s tomorrow. Nobehara) We’re having a birthday party tonight. Nabatame) 21 years old. Nobehara) Okami-san? Mita) Is she younger than me? Nobehara) Let’s say at least 26. Nobehara) Otherwise, she’d be younger than Roga-zeki—so let’s go with 27. Nabatame) She really looks young Nabatame) Her skin is glowing. Mita) Unlike you—your skin’s not glowing. Nabatame) I’ve already lost my glow. Staff) Still not used to the camera? Shunta) Nah… Shunta) I thought I was getting used to it, but I wasn’t. Mita) It’s not a meetup time. Nabatame) Got it. Nabatame) I’ll go along with it this time. Mita) It’s not really a meetup—it’s just that the taxi comes at 7:20, and we leave then. Nabatame) Wait, that’s early, isn’t it? Nabatame) That’s pretty early! Nobehara) This is starting to sound like a comedy sketch, so let’s stop. Mita) You’re definitely going to be late. Nabatame) Don’t say it with your eyes all bloodshot like that. Mita) I’ve had enough of it already. Kotakiyama) It smells like curry. Staff) Curry? Staff) Did it make you want to eat curry? Kotakiyama) Nah. Kotakiyama) It just smells like curry. Staff) You smelled it? Staff) All of a sudden? Kotakiyama) Yeah, all of a sudden… Kotakiyama) Happens sometimes. I catch a curry-like smell. Kotakiyama) Maybe it’s because someone’s making curry bread? Staff) They’re off today. Kotakiyama) Oh right, it’s Thursday. Soma) Galaxy Divide! Staff) You’re still saying that? Staff) Why? Soma) Galaxy Divide! Staff) Out of nowhere? Soma) It’s one of Garp’s moves. Nobehara) Fake smile. Staff) Your hair’s gotten long. Koga) I’m getting it cut soon. Koga) It’s time for a trim. Staff) When? Koga) Tomorrow. Kyoda) I dropped in the rankings, so now he’s glaring at me. Koga) I’m not! I’m really not! Koga) Seriously, cut it out. Koga) You’re gonna make me look like some kind of weirdo again! Nobehara) Put your hands together— Nobehara) Gocchandesita. All) Gocchandesita.

    11. Sincerely, Nabatame does not look well.
His knees hurt, and it seems like he's having some medical problem.
I love Nabatame and want to see him reach Ozeki, so please take care!

    18. When the victor pushes his opponent out of the ring and the other rikishi intervene, is that for the protection of the opponent or for those on the outside? Or is it in consideration for those with injuries?
